Book excerpt: XFV-12Conceived in the early 1970's, the Rockwell International XFV-12A was an evolution of research efforts aimed at bringing to fruition a supersonic fighter aircraft capable of conducting V/STOL (Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing) operations from the deck of a surface vessel or terrestrial base. A major goal for the XFV-12A research aircraft program, employing thrust augmented wing technology to achieve vertical lift, was to produce a practical design endowed with a relatively benign V/STOL footprint. The volume details the genesis of the XFV-12A program through static and dynamic hover testing of the prototype air vehicle at the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Langley Research Centre Impact Dynamic Research Facility to the redevelopment program that spawned the XFV-12B and XFV-12C designs. These latter designs did not proceed beyond the drawing board prior to the XFV-12 programs ultimate cancellation in 1981. Post XFV-12 cancellation, Rockwell International was contracted by NASA Ames Research Center to conduct design studies into aerodynamic technology for a single-cruise engine V/STOL fighter/attack aircraft, building on work conducted during the XFV-12 program - this work was conducted in the period June 1981 to February 1982.The volume is supported by photographs, renderings, technical drawings and specification charts from the aircraft designer and research institutions. At times there has been a deliberate switch from metric measurements to the fore and imperial measurements secondary to imperial to the fore and metric secondary. This has been done to ensure 100% accuracy in primary measurement reporting from respective designer/research organisations, whereas secondary measurements may, at times, be rounded up or down.

The Last Year of the Luftwaffe is the story of a once all-conquering force struggling to stave off an inevitable and total defeat. This book gives a complete account of Luftwaffe operations during the last twelve months of the fighting in Europe—including the dramatic Bodenplatte (or “Baseplate”) offensive over the Ardennes in December, 1944. In this comprehensive examination of Hitler’s air force, Dr. Alfred Price examines its state from May, 1944, to May, 1945, analyzing not only the forces available to it, but also the likely potential, and impact, of new aircraft and weapons systems. He also assesses the Luftwaffe’s High Command’s performance and the effect of Allied attacks and operations. In doing so he rejects several long-standing myths, clarifies the impact of the jet and rocket fighters, and demonstrates that the Luftwaffe performed as well as could be expected under the harsh circumstances of fighting a losing war.

Book excerpt: Designed to allow maximum loiter time in the battle zone, the A-1 Skyraider was one of the U.S. military¿s most versatile Cold War-era aircraft. It was also one of the most enduring ¿ the ¿Spad¿ flew in the 40¿s, 50¿s, 60¿s and early 70¿s, performing combat missions in Korea and Vietnam. Boasting heavy armor and seven hardpoints on each wing, it could pack a wallop. Yet the plane could also hold its own against fighters: in 1966 two Navy pilots scored victories against MiG-17s. Over 3,100 Skyraiders were built. They flew for the USAF until 1972. Originally printed by the U.S. Navy, this A-1H Flight Operating Manual taught pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. Classified ¿Restricted¿, the manual was recently declassified and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been reformatted and color images appear in black and white. Care has been taken however to preserve the integrity of the text.

Book excerpt: From the Middle East to the Iron Curtain?the definitive combat history of the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25.July 1967: At the Moscow Air Show, the Soviets unveiled six new state-of-the-art aircraft. From among this lineup of new fighters and interceptors stood the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25-purportedly capable of outrunning and outmaneuvering any aircraft in NATO's inventory.Yet even before its public appearance in Moscow, the MiG-25 had been a grave concern for Western analysts. Indeed, this new interceptor could fly at speeds in excess of Mach 3 and cruise at altitudes heretofore deemed unreachable for a tactical fighter. Moreover, NATO's intelligence community was baffled by how the Soviet Union had cobbled together such a "masterpiece" of modern engineering. The reality, however, was that this "interceptor" was a poorly-designed airframe with an oversized motor. Although it excelled as a reconnaissance aircraft, it fared poorly as a dogfighter - and it was typically the loser when pitted against Western aircraft like the F-14 Tomcat and F-15 Eagle. From the Sinai Peninsula?to the Soviet-Afghan War?to Operation Desert Storm, "Foxbat Tales" is the definitive operational and combat history of the MiG-25.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as 1979, Soviet aircraft designers started work on a program called I-90, a fighter for the 1990s. Two Soviet aircraft design bureaus took on the task, Mikoyan and Sukhoi. Work began in 1983 but with the dissolution of the Soviet Union the project stalled. In 2002 the Russian government kicked off a new program under which Sukhoi began development of what was then known as PAK FA (Future Tactical Aviation Aircraft System). Known in house as the T-50, this aircraft strongly resembled the American F-22 Raptor in overall appearance. The first prototype took to the air on January 29, 2010 and in 2017 the fighter was allocated the service designation Su-57. In 2018 the aircraft had its combat debut when four of the prototypes were briefly deployed to Syria during the Russian campaign against the IS terror network in that country. Production was officially launched in May 2019, with the Russian Air Force having 70-plus on order. This work charts the development and trials history of the 1.44, Su-47 and Su-57, as well as other project versions that did not make it to the hardware stage. It is illustrated with numerous previously unpublished photos and drawings.

Book excerpt: This is the definitive history of the Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik and provides detailed coverage on every aspect of this famous warplane. This is perhaps the most famous aircraft in the history of Russian and Soviet aviation. During World War 2 this rugged ground attack aircraft was arguably the Soviets’ most effective weapon. Protected by its heavy armor, the low-flying aircraft was incredibly difficult to shoot down, and its powerful array of weaponry included a cannon, machine guns, rockets, and special HEAT antitank bombs. It was capable of penetrating the armor of every German tank in the field at the time, including the Panther and Tiger tanks, as well as reaping destruction among the ranks of enemy infantry on the ground. The Il-2 was so successful that the design was produced in greater numbers than any other military aircraft in history, with over 40,000 being built between 1941 and 1955.
