Book excerpt: The Konzentrationslager (KZ) Ebensee Concentration Camp was established to house prisoners tasked to further the research and production of the V-2 missile program run by Nazi SS Officer Wernher von Braun - an American Hero. This camp was liberated on May 6, 1945 freeing almost 17,000 prisoners. The Third Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron of the Third Cavalry Group came up the road to the camp at around 10AM on that fateful Sunday; at 2:45PM, the Third Platoon of F Company opened the gates. Unfortunately for the men of these military units, together with the U.S. Army 139th Evacuation Hospital, became phantom units in historical archives. Inside the Gates details the 139th Evacuation (MASH) Hospital’s involvement in freeing the thousands of inmates in the said Austrian Concentration Camp. Book Events: June 29, 2010 TV interview, lecture and book signing with Bob Persinger, the tank commander, who opened the gate at KZ Ebensee in Rockford IL. These tunnels were built for armaments production; the laborers were prisoners brought from Mauthausen. Describes the inhuman conditions in the camp, noting that the Jews were treated worst. Toward the end of the war, the camp became overcrowded with prisoners evacuated from camps further east; the camp commandant attempted to solve this problem by causing the speedy death of sick Jewish prisoners by deliberate neglect and exposure to cold. The camp was constructed in November 1943; by the time of the liberation in May 1945, more than 8,300 inmates had perished in this camp.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive history of the Nazi concentration camps In a landmark work of history, Nikolaus Wachsmann offers an unprecedented, integrated account of the Nazi concentration camps from their inception in 1933 through their demise, seventy years ago, in the spring of 1945. The Third Reich has been studied in more depth than virtually any other period in history, and yet until now there has been no history of the camp system that tells the full story of its broad development and the everyday experiences of its inhabitants, both perpetrators and victims, and all those living in what Primo Levi called "the gray zone." In KL, Wachsmann fills this glaring gap in our understanding. He not only synthesizes a new generation of scholarly work, much of it untranslated and unknown outside of Germany, but also presents startling revelations, based on many years of archival research, about the functioning and scope of the camp system. Examining, close up, life and death inside the camps, and adopting a wider lens to show how the camp system was shaped by changing political, legal, social, economic, and military forces, Wachsmann produces a unified picture of the Nazi regime and its camps that we have never seen before. A boldly ambitious work of deep importance, KL is destined to be a classic in the history of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deportation of 1,755 Jews from the islands of Rhodes and Cos in July 1944, shortly after the last deportation from Hungary, was the last transport to leave Greece for Auschwitz and brought to a close the last significant phase of the genocide of Europe's Jews (notwithstanding the death marches). Within six weeks of their deportation, the Germans were retreating from Greece and the Balkans as Hitler's empire shrank. This last deportation is frequently acknowledged in Holocaust literature but its significance for our understanding of the Nazi genocide of the Jews remains largely overlooked. The timing of the transport, when it was clear to the German military elite that Nazi Germany had lost the war, raises important questions in relation to long-term ideological Nazi goals and the immediate contingency thrown up by war. Anthony McElligott, in this account of the last Greek transport of Jews to Auschwitz, tells a compelling story of this previously underexplored event and sheds light on an important aspect of the Holocaust through an in-depth study of one Eastern Mediterranean community.
