Download or read book Mouse or Rat? written by Umberto Eco and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the world-famous author of THE NAME OF THE ROSE, an illuminating and humorous study on the pleasures and pitfalls of translation. 'Translation is always a shift, not between two languages but between two cultures. A translator must take into account rules that are not strictly linguistic but, broadly speaking, cultural.' Umberto Eco is of the world's most brilliant and entertaining writers on literature and language. In this accessible and dazzling study, he turns his eye on the subject of translations and the problems the differences between cultures can cause. The book is full of little gems about mistranslations and misunderstandings. For example when you put 'Studies in the logic of Charles Sanders Peirce' through an internet translation machine, it becomes 'Studies in the logic of the Charles of sandpaper grinding machines Peirce'. In Italian 'ratto' has no connotation of 'contemptible person' but denotes speed ('you dirty rat' could take on a whole new meaning!) What could be a weighty subject is never dull, fired by Eco's immense wit and erudition, providing an entertaining read that illuminates the process of negotiation that all translators must make.

Book Synopsis The Philosophy of Umberto Eco by : Sara G. Beardsworth
Download or read book The Philosophy of Umberto Eco written by Sara G. Beardsworth and published by Open Court Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philosophy of Umberto Eco stands out in the Library of Living Philosophers series as the volume on the most interdisciplinary scholar hitherto and probably the most widely translated. The Italian philosopher’s name and works are well known in the humanities, both his philosophical and literary works being translated into fifteen or more languages. Eco is a founder of modern semiotics and widely known for his work in the philosophy of language and aesthetics. He is also a leading figure in the emergence of postmodern literature, and is associated with cultural and mass communication studies. His writings cover topics such as advertising, television, and children’s literature as well as philosophical questions bearing on truth, reality, cognition, language, and literature. The critical essays in this volume cover the full range of this output. This book has wide appeal not only because of its interdisciplinary nature but also because of Eco’s famous “high and low” approach, which is deeply scholarly in conception and very accessible in outcome. The short essay “Why Philosophy?” included in the volume is exemplary in this regard: it will appeal to scholars for its wit and to high school students for its intelligibility.

Download or read book The Quest for the Phoenix written by Hereward Tilton and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author presents with this intellectual biography of the Lutheran alchemist Count Michael Maier an academic study of western esotericism in general and to the study of alchemy and rosicrucianism in particular. The author charts the development of Maier's Hermetic worldview in the context of his service at the courts of Emperor Rudolf II and Moritz of Hessen-Kassel. The problem of the nature of early Rosicrucianism is addressed in detail with reference to Maier's role in the promotion of this "serious jest" in the years immediately prior to the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War. The work is set in the context of ongoing debates concerning the nature of early modern alchemy and its role in the history of Western esotericism.
Book Synopsis Support in Times of No Support by : Wolfgang Frindte
Download or read book Support in Times of No Support written by Wolfgang Frindte and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 2018, the authors of the book stood in the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris. They marvelled at the Foucault pendulum, which made its circular movements on a long rope under the dome. Like Casaubon in Umberto Eco's book The Foucault Pendulum, the authors were amazed and wondered what could be at the ideal end of the thread pendulum. The fixed point that could give us support and security in an uncertain world and difficult times? What uncertainties, what times or even what threats are we actually talking about? Where can we find the fixed points, the safe spaces of our lives? This book deals with these and other questions. The authors found inspiration for the book in Umberto Eco. And so it is also a homage to Eco.
Download or read book Heinrich Himmler written by Franz Wegener and published by Kulturfoerderverein Ruhrg.. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, at best, has been mentioned in previous monographs about Himmler as the second most powerful man of National-Socialism in passing, the historian Franz Wegener develops in greater depth: Himmler’s mind was open to diverse occult influences originating in Germany as well as France. Thus he wrote about a book of the German spiritualist, Carl du Prel, who experimented with hovering tables and mediums: “A small scientific work on a philosophical basis which truly has me believe in spiritualism and was the first to really introduce me to it.” He received Gaston de Mengel, a British occultist, who wrote for the mysterious occult group of the Polaires in Paris, and who collaborated closely with the founder of the esoteric university in Nice. As researched by Wegener, Himmler purchased himself a manual for “pendulum practice and pendulum magic,” and in this way came also in touch with the theory of the gnostic “Od.” He believed in the “transmigration of souls,” attempted to obtain horoscopes from a Munich astrologer and his various occult advisors, and agreed with the hypotheses of Karl Heise (“Okkultes Logentum,” 1921) that occult powers were pulling the strings behind Communists, Jews, and Freemasons. On this background Wegener does not allow Himmler’s tendency about occult subjects pass as a mere private matter: “If Himmler’s image of the enemy with respect to Freemasonry and Jews was fed also by occult patterns, one can no longer speak of a ‘private matter,’ since the political and, by no means, private consequence of Himmler’s occult world view must be called mass murder."
