Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State, the Nation, and the Jews is a study of Germany's late nineteenth-century antisemitism dispute and of the liberal tradition that engendered it. The Berlin Antisemitism Dispute began in 1879 when a leading German liberal, Heinrich von Treitschke, wrote an article supporting anti-Jewish activities that seemed at the time to gel into an antisemitic "movement." Treitschke's comments immediately provoked a debate within the German intellectual community. Responses from supporters and critics alike argued the relevance, meaning, and origins of this "new" antisemitism. Ultimately the Disput.
Book Synopsis The Medieval Archive of Antisemitism in Nineteenth-Century Sweden by : Cordelia Heß

This book was released on 2021-12-20 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significance of religion for the development of modern racist antisemitism is a much debated topic in the study of Jewish-Christian relations. This book, the first study on antisemitism in nineteenth-century Sweden, provides new insights into the debate from the specific case of a country in which religious homogeneity was the considered ideal long into the modern era. Between 1800 and 1900, approximately 150 books and pamphlets were printed in Sweden on the subject of Judaism and Jews. About one third comprised of translations mostly from German, but to a lesser extent also from French and English. Two thirds were Swedish originals, covering all genres and topics, but with a majority on religious topics: conversion, supersessionism, and accusations of deicide and bloodlust. The latter stem from the vastly popular medieval legends of Ahasverus, Pilate, and Judas which were printed in only slightly adapted forms and accompanied by medieval texts connecting these apocryphal figures to contemporary Jews, ascribing them a physical, essential, and biological coherence and continuity – a specific Jewish temporality shaped in medieval passion piety, which remained functional and intelligible in the modern period. Relying on medieval models and their combination of religious and racist imagery, nineteenth-century debates were informed by a comprehensive and mostly negative "knowledge" about Jews.

Book Synopsis The Age of Global Dialogue by : Leonard J. Swidler
Download or read book The Age of Global Dialogue written by Leonard J. Swidler and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking beyond the absolutes Christians and other religious persons increasingly find "deabsolutized" in our modern thought world, Swidler reflects on the ways we humans think about the world and its meaning now that increasingly we notice that there are other ways of understanding the world than the way we grew up in. In this new situation we need to develop a common language we can use together both to appreciate our neighbors and enrich ourselves, what the author calls Ecumenical Esperanto, because it should serve as a common language without replacing any of the living languages of our religious and ideological traditions. Of course, such thinking anew about the world and its meaning must necessarily mean thinking anew about all of our religious beliefs--but this time, in dialogue.

Book Synopsis Theology of the New Testament by : Udo Schnelle
Download or read book Theology of the New Testament written by Udo Schnelle and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 1089 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following his well-received Apostle Paul, prominent European scholar Udo Schnelle now offers a major new theology of the New Testament. The work has been translated into English from the original German, with bibliographic adaptations, by leading American scholar M. Eugene Boring. This comprehensive critical introduction combines historical and theological analysis. Schnelle begins with the teaching of Jesus and continues with a discussion of the theology of Paul. He then moves on to the Synoptic Gospels; the deutero-Pauline, catholic, and Johannine letters; and Revelation, paying due attention to authorship, chronology, genre, and canonical considerations. This is an essential book for anyone with a scholarly interest in the New Testament.

Book Synopsis Augustine, the Harvest and Theology (1300-1650) by : Hagen
Download or read book Augustine, the Harvest and Theology (1300-1650) written by Hagen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this Festschrift dedicated to Heiko Oberman is Augustine reception in theology (1300-1650). Contemporary discussions about an Augustinian school prior to Luther and about Luther's possible relation to such have been intensified by the work of Heiko Oberman. Thirteen invited scholars produced new work. William Courtenay wrote on late medieval discussions of psychic states and human motivations and volitions; Christoph Burger on Hugolin of Orvieto; Tarald Rasmussen on Jacob Perez of Valencia; Manfred Schulze on Johannes von Staupitz; Bernard Hamm on Jerome reception in Nuremberg; Scott Hendrix on Luther's loyalties; Kurt-Victor Selge on Luther's ecclesiology; M.A. Screech on Augustine reception in Rabelais; David Steinmetz on Rom. 7; Arthur Olsen on Martin Chemnitz; James Tanis on Abraham van der Heyden; Suse Rau and Elsie Vezey compiled the Heiko Augustine Oberman Bibliography. Essays are published in their original English or German; English summaries are provided for the German entries. The general student of the period (1300-1650) should gain an overview of the appropriation of Augustine during that time and Professor Oberman's colleagues should profit from the new research contained herein.
