Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book opens with an impressive article by Georg Kretschmar. The relationship and the increasing difference between Jews and Christians are determined by the way Jews and Christians have defined themselves against one another. Christians saw Jews as those who rejected Jesus, and therefore identified themselves in opposition to the Jews. The one and only Church, in origin Jewish and gentile became - by definition - anti-Jewish. One of the consequences was Auschwitz, for Jews a never-ending experience. The distinction between Jews and Christians is still present in modern definitions of Church. The problem remains: how can Jews and Christians be defined differently, and both be successors to the same tradition? Other contributions are: Legem statuimus, on rhetorical aspects in the discussion (Johannes S. Vos - Amsterdam), Wie steht es um den judischen Einfluss auf den christlichen Martyrerkult? (Willy Rordorf - Neuchatel), Die Epistula Anne ad Senecam (Wolfgang Wischmeyer - Heidelberg), Juden und Christen in Georgien (Tamila Mgaloblishvili - Tbilisi), Juden und Christen in Alexandrien (Roelof van den Broek - Utrecht), Juden und Christen im Heiligen Land (Adolf M. Ritter - Heidelberg), Juden und Christen in Aphrodisias (Pieter W. van der Horst - Utrecht). The book is written in German.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of Early Christian rituals in connection with death and burial has so far not sufficiently been explored. Volp’s study focuses on the surviving literary sources—both pagan and Christian—, together with inscriptions and other archaeological remains while taking into account recent results from science and humanities. A summary of death and ritual in the ancient Mediterranean religions is followed by detailed analyses of the Christian sources from the 2nd to the 5th century. Thus, basic developments are being discovered which led to and accompanied the forming of Christian rituals, such as ritual purity or the social structure of family and society. Being the first such interdisciplinary approach, it also represents the first monographic work on the topic since 1941.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

When 19th-century German religious reformer Abraham Geiger argued the latter, he began a debate that continues to this day. Here Susannah Heschel traces the genesis of Geiger's contention and examines the reaction to it within Christian theology. 3 photos.

Book excerpt: Expanding the impact of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's philosophy to the disciplines of Christian Origins and Christian theology, this original study makes the case for understanding early Christianity through such Deleuzioguattarian concepts as the 'rhizome', the 'machine', the 'body without organs' and the 'multiplicity', using the theoretical tool of schizoanalysis to do so. The reconstruction of the historical emergence of early Christianity, Bradley H. McLean argues, has been constrained by traditional assumptions about its historical and transcendental origins. These assumptions are ill-suited to theorizing the genesis, change and transformation of early Christianity in the first three centuries of the Common Era. To capture the dynamism of early Christianity, McLean applies Guattari's concept of the 'machine', to the analysis of early Christianity. Arguing that machines are both an unnoticed dimension of early Christianity, and a major analytical tool for the discipline, McLean highlights the potential of the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari to challenge and reconfigure not just our knowledge of early Christianity, but all aspects of Hellenistic Judaism, and the Greco-Roman world, as well as our understanding of Jesus of Nazareth and the Jesus movement. By subverting the concept of a single transcendental or historical origin of Christianity, this book facilitates new forms of dialogue and cooperation between Christians and co-religionists.

Book excerpt: It was long believed that Roman Jews lived in complete isolation. This book offers a refutation of this thesis. It focuses on the Jewish community in third and fourth-century Rome, and in particular on how this community related to the larger, non-Jewish world that surrounded it. Jewish archaeological remains and Jewish funerary inscriptions from Rome are examined from various angles, and compared to pagan and early Christian material and epigraphical remains. The author has shown great comprehensiveness, thoroughness, and accuracy in examining this epigraphic evidence. He also discusses the enigmatic legal treatise called the Collatio. This volume proposes a new way in which the relationship between Jews and non-Jews in late antiquity can be studied. As such, it is an important and useful addition to the literature on Roman Jewry in the middle Empire.

Based upon the Gospels, the writings of Paul, Josephus, the Mishnah, the Tosefta, and archeology, the volume profiles the Pharisees and explores the relationship between the Pharisees and the Judaic religious system foreshadowed by the library of Qumran. A great virtue of this study is that no attempt is made to homogenize the distinct pictures or reconstruct a singular account of the Pharisees; instead, by carefully considering the sources, the chapters allow different pictures of the Pharisees to stand side by side.
