Book excerpt: When Edith Templeton’s stories began appearing in The New Yorker in the late 1950s, she quickly became a favorite of the magazine’s discerning readers. Her finely honed writing, honestly drawn heroines, and distinctive themes secured her reputation. The Dart’s of Cupid collects seven of Templeton’s stories for the first time and reintroduces one of the truly great writers of the twentieth century. In settings ranging from a decrepit Bohemian castle between the wars to London during World War II to the Italian Riviera in the 1990s, the heroines of these stories often find themselves confronting unfathomable passsions and perplexing actions by others, but they seldom feel regret.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who have read other works by the Marquis de Sade, particularly "The 120 Days of Sodom," and are aware of the vast scope he gives to the word libertinism, will find a Sade this time more sensual than perverse. And this is not a negative factor; on the contrary, the Marquis's writing surprises with its quality and beauty. However, promiscuity is present throughout the work. His critique remains constantly aimed at holy women, virgins, and institutions such as the clergy and marriage, which led to his works being censored even a century after their publication. In this complete edition of "Contes Libertins," the reader will find 14 stories that represent an excellent sample of the irreverent, provocative, and boundless Marquis de Sade.
Book Synopsis Magill's Literary Annual 2003 by : Salem Press
Download or read book Magill's Literary Annual 2003 written by Salem Press and published by Salem Press. This book was released on 2003-06 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magill's Literary Annual, 2003, is the fiftieth publication in a series that began in 1954. The philosophy behind the annual has been to evaluate critically 200 major examples of serious literature published during the previous year. Our focus is to provide coverage for works that are likely to be of particular interest to the general reader, that reflect the publishing trends of a given year, that add to careers of authors being taught and researched in literature programs, and that will stand the test of time. By filtering the thousands of books published each year down to two hundred notable titles, the editors have provided the busy librarian with an excellent reader's advisory tool and patrons with fodder for book discussion groups and a guide for selection. The essay-reviews in the Annual also provide a more academic, ""reference"" review of a work than is typically found in newspapers and other periodical sources. This year's works are drawn from such categories as anthropology, autobiography, biography, current affairs, diaries, economics, environment, essays, history, language, literary criticism, medicine, memoirs, nature, philosophy, poetry, psychology, religion, science, short fiction, sociology, technology, travel, and women's issues. The articles are arranged alphabetically by book title. A complete list of included titles can be found at the beginning of volume 1. Each 2,000-word article begins with a block of top matter that indicates the title, author, publisher, and price of the work. When possible, the year of the author's birth is also provided. The top matter also includes the number of pages of the book, the type of work, and, when appropriate, the time period and locale represented in the text. Next comes a capsule description of the work. When pertinent, a list of principal characters or personages, with brief descriptions, introduces the review. These original essay-reviews analyze intent and relative success of the author and the work under discussion. To assist the reader further, the articles are supplemented by a list of additional reviews for further study. Every essay includes a brief biography of the author or authors, and thumbnail photographs of the book covers and authors are included as available. At the end of volume 2 are four cumulative indexes listing works covered from the years 1977 to 2003: an index of Biographical Works by Subject, a Category Index, a Title Index, and an Author Index. The index of Biographical Works by Subject is arranged by subject rather than by author or title.

Book Synopsis Coyote's Song: Part One with Millennium and Other Stories (Revised) by : Matthew Theisen
Download or read book Coyote's Song: Part One with Millennium and Other Stories (Revised) written by Matthew Theisen and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coyote is not the most reliable character in the galaxy, but when Lady Nature commissions him for a job, he takes it for the promised reward. There are, however, contrary personages whom desire to have their own schemes and story-lines prevail. Whether to stay a free agent or enlist in a group becomes of paramount importance as the struggles intensify. Characters want their own versions of stories with their own images, yet for that to occur, they must be an individual, which can be a dangerous thing in battling societies of divisive factions. Coyote's Song: Part One is written in pentameter rhyming couplets. Millennium and Other Stories explores how family life has changed in America, with new figures rising daily as role models to adopt humans as wayward children whom require eternal vigilance. The scripts supplied to people are vapid renditions of mass-produced corporate art. The only uniqueness is an unoriginal sin of art-theft; the good and bad is decided by bottom-line profit. The revised collection of nine stories contains a variety of genres and how characters are inspired by sundry authors, be it Ganesha or Raymond Chandler, in different systems on collision courses.
