Book excerpt: The DARPA-NRL Laser Program is concerned with the development of laser technology of electronic state lasers and associated physics. In particular the development of the XeF laser has been emphasized. Experimental and theoretical efforts were made to understand and improve laser performance. The radiative lifetimes of XeF and KrF were measured by the photolytic dissociation of XeF2 and KrF2 respectively. In addition quenching rate constants and radiative lifetimes are used in a code to predict laser performance of both XeF and KrF. A description of the code is given. Experimentally further efforts have been made to measure optical absorption in the XeF laser and to improve performance by investigating the role of the diluent gas. In other work, an excited metal-rare gas mixture was investigated to evaluate them as laser candidates. Finally quenching measurements of Ba were begun. If high values are obtained for the quenching measurements, there is a possibility that a Ba-N2O electronic state chemical laser can be made. (Author).

A short pulse electron beam device was set up to remeasure the XeF lifetime more accurately and work was started to synthesize KrF2 in order to measure the lifetime of KrF. Values for the radiative lifetime are used in a code to predict laser performance of both XeF and KrF. Experimentally the performance of the XeF laser has been improved. Long laser pulses were observed for the first time and laser efficiency was increased by substitution of Ne for Ar, the diluent. Absorption measurements combined with code calculations showed that the improvement was due to decreased dimer ion optical absorption.

The chemical infrared laser program includes studies of pulsed HCl laser systems and molecular energy transfer processes. Several chlorinated hydrocarbons have been identified as attractive chlorine sources for HCl lasers based on the Cl + HI reaction. Vibrational relaxation rates for the CO laser and the potential D2 yields HCl V-V transfer laser system have been measured. The electical infrared program emphasizes electric-discharge gasdynamic lasers and electron-beam pumping of potential laser systems in the mid infrared. Studies of the D2 yields HCl system have been continued along with detailed measurements of the discharge and flow characteristics. The D2-CO2 laser system previously discovered has been found to have comparable efficiency to the N2-CO2 EDGDL. A number of excitation approaches are being evaluated for application to electronic state lasers. Discovery of the XeBr laser as a result of electron-beam excitation of Xe/Br2 mixtures has led to the rare-gas halide laser systems. Successful transverse excitation of copper chloride offers promise as a more efficient copper vapor laser. Electrical and optical pumping schemes to extend the range of operation of the previously reported Hg vapor laser are described.

The Chemical Infrared Laser Program is focussed on DF-CO2 supersonic transfer laser experiments designed to evaluate chemical augmentation of gas dynamic lasers. Augmentation has been observed but is limited by deactivation processes. The temperature dependence of energy transfer processes in CO, CO2, and N2O has been measured. The Electrical Infrared Laser Program has two primary projects, short-pulse CO2 laser technology and electric-discharge gas dynamic lasers (EDGDL). The short pulse laser project has successfully been completed culminating in reliable 70 J single-pulse operation. A compact high-pressure e-beam-controlled CO2 laser has been developed for the generation of picosecond laser pulses. Infrared fluorescence from HCl generated by energy transfer from vibrationally excited D2 has been measured.

Low-temperature vibrational relaxation measurements in CO2 mixtures indicate a minimum in the relaxation rates near room temperature. The Electrical Infrared Program emphasizes electric-discharge-gasdynamic lasers and electron-beam pumping of potential laser systems in the mid infrared. Energy transfer has been observed in the D2*-HCl system and a D2*-CO2 laser has been developed. A number of excitation approaches are being evaluated for application to Electronic State Lasers. Studies of direct electron-beam excitation of the Ar*-N2 laser have been completed and a sophisticated model for electron energy deposition has been developed. Optical pumping techniques, as used in the previously reported Hg vapor laser, are being extended to other atomic systems. Studies of the Hg vapor laser are essentially complete and reported here in detail. A transverse discharge Cu vapor laser has been assembled and is being tested.

Several new energy transfer lasers have been discovered and a detailed discussion of the study of direct excitation HCl lasers is given. A number of excitation approaches are being evaluated for application to electronic state gas lasers. A most important step in the development of rare-gas halide lasers is the reporting here of the operation of XeF and KrF lasers in self-sustained discharges. Chemical pumping of atomic states is shown to lead to sufficient population for lasing and related quenching studies are described. Transverse discharge excitation of metal vapor lasers has been reduced to practice and coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy is being developed for probing the number density and vibrational temperature of gaseous species in a lasing medium.
