Download or read book The Dark Room written by Rachel Seiffert and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2012-04-02 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Dark Room, the experiences of three people are evoked with stunning emotional depth and psychological authenticity. A boy born with a physical deformity finds work as a photographer's assistant during the 1930s and captures on film the changing temper of Berlin, the city he loves. But his acute photographic eye never provides him with the power to understand the significance of what he sees through his camera. In the weeks following Germany's surrender, a teenage girl whose parents are both in Allied captivity takes her younger siblings on a terrifying, illegal journey through the four zones of occupation in search of her grandmother. Many years after the event, a young man trying to discover why the Russians imprisoned his grandfather for nine years after the war meets resistance at every turn; the only person who agrees, reluctantly, to help him has his own tainted past to contend with. With dazzling originality and to profound effect, Rachel Seiffert has recreated one of the darkest moments of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Snapshots taken by American soldiers of Iraqi prisoners stripped naked, humiliated and tortured shocked the world in 2004 and more have followed from the conflict in Afghanistan, but whether the public have been horrified by the soldiers' conduct or the fact they have taken pictures has not been clear. In fact, as this remarkable book reveals and relates, soldiers have taken photographs of war and its atrocities for more than 100 years. But their pictures are private, intended mainly for the soldiers themselves, as mementoes or as attempts to make sense of the chaos, brutality and boredom of war. They can be gruesome or sociable, shocking or mundane and they are seldom regarded as serious contributions to a visual culture of war, which since 1939 has been dominated by professional war photography. But with the 21st-century shift to simple digital photography, transmission by the internet available to all, and a new 'citizen journalism', soldiers' pictures are acquiring a new resonance."Private Pictures" traces this unacknowledged genre of photography from the origins of popular photography in the Boer War through to the present day; it discusses how the images have been used and it asks: what effect might the wider appreciation of soldiers' pictures have on the popular perception of war?

This book was released on 2010-11-18 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pages of this book vividly conjure up the sights and smells and sounds of Martinez’s adventures in Korea. He enthusiastically spent every free moment traveling everywhere, taking hundreds of photographs, teaching himself to speak, read, and write the language. Nothing escaped his youthful eyes, from ancient temples to rice planting and harvesting to little known facets of the country’s rich 5,000 year old culture. His exuberance with each of his discoveries is faithfully recorded, as are the familiar things we all felt—homesickness and fear, camaraderie and purpose. If you want to see the Korea of forty-five years ago through the bright eyes of a nineteen-year old soldier from Texas with a truly remarkable memory for every detail, this is the best way to do it.—William Roskey, Author of MUFFLED SHOTS: A Year on the DMZ

Download or read book My Dark Room written by Julie Park and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In what kinds of spaces do we become most aware of the thoughts in our own heads? My Dark Room is a book about the intimate sites of inner experience in eighteenth-century England and their role in the rise both of interiority and the novel. Julie Park considers sites such as grottos, cottages, closets, and especially the camera obscura, that beguiling enclosure into which the outside world is projected through a lens. This type of "dark room" and the projections within it serve Park as a paradigm for the fleeting states of interiority that eighteenth-century figures felt compelled to generate and experience. Park integrates material analyses of these "interior" spaces with close readings of novelistic and proto-novelistic texts. Taken together, these case studies amount to a fresh narrative of the novel's development as a genre of interiority from 1650 to 1811. They include Andrew Marvell's country house poem, Upon Appleton House; Margaret Cavendish's loosely fictional letters about domestic life, Sociable Letters, and the utopian fantasy/critique of the new science, The Blazing World; and Alexander Pope's long poem, Eloisa to Abelard. Park's innovative method of "spatial formalism" reveals how physical settings enable psychic interiors to achieve vitality in fictive and real lives"--
