Book excerpt: In Three Crows Hunting, Szwed has selected poems he wrote about how he has felt and seen conflict. Biographical in many respects, this collection of poems cuts across his life, from the time the author left the U.S. Army after serving and being wounded in Viet Nam, until 2002. Through combat, recovery, divorces, marriages, substance abuse, a variety of jobs, raising a daughter, in sickness and in health, loving or fighting, Szwed's poems wrestle with how we get into and out of conflicts, and how we deal with it. These poems demonstrate that we can not always say nice things in comfortably metered terms, nor need we always say hard things awkwardly or harshly. Through poignancy, wit, sarcasm, humor, plain speech, or mocking tirade, these poems challenge author and reader, alike, to look as squarely as possible at the real issues of personal responsibility and accountability; to take stock of the greater picture as well as common human sufferings. Szwed would have us remember that every power and entity is accountable. The author refuses to be locked into a single style or form of poetic expression. Paraphrasing Joseph Grucci, the author's former poetry workshop instructor at The Pennsylvania State University, Szwed notes that all elements, including title, rhythms, color, and sentiment of a poem, should be organic and unique to the construction of the whole. At times there is an elemental shift within a poem that stops the reader to meditate on the mood change, or some clash of thoughts or feelings. This is part of how the author poetically recognizes natural struggles of our hearts and minds, in the best or worst of times or conflicts. Szwed's poems encourage readers to take heart that, in spite of our selves or circumstance, we can get through the trials of life; every soul matters. The author's book "Pining from the Heat" is being concurrently published by 1stBooks Library.

His original verse would fill two volumes the size of this one, and his translated verse—from Icelandic, Italian, Dutch, French, Magyar, Latin, Ukrainian and Polish—would fill 5,000 pages. No poet in the English-speaking tradition is more deeply grounded in world literature. The original poetry of Watson Kirkconnell has been primarily narrative in character: first, the twelve philosophically slanted books of his Spenserian epic, The Eternal Quest; then the seventeen vivid narratives in The Flying Bull, and Other Tales, a sort of Western echo of The Canterbury Tales; and finally the thirty narrative poems of his new Centennial Tales, many of which were written in 1964. These are framed about the history of Canada, and are written in honour of the nation's Centennial in 1967. They range from the coming of the first "Amerindians" from Asia about 30,000 B.C. to a possible atomic holocaust in A.D. 2000, and include poems on the Quebec Conference of 1864, the Vimy Memorial, the Italian Campaign and the Canadians in Cyprus. This volume also contains some lyrics from Dr. Kirkconnell's light opera, The Mod at Grand Pré, and the whole of his Greek-style drama, Let My People Go, with its setting in Egypt just before the Exodus and its issues in the present. The original poetry has been arranged in roughly the reverse of chronological order, while the translations are arranged according to the dates of publication.

In the context of Chinese culture, films such as Hou Hsiao-hsien's City of Sadness and Lou Ye's Summer Palace and novels such as Ye Zhaoyan's Nanjing 1937: A Love Story and Wang Xiaobo's The Golden Age collectively reimagine past horrors and give rise to new historical narratives. Michael Berry takes an innovative look at the representation of six specific historical traumas in modern Chinese history: the Musha Incident (1930); the Rape of Nanjing (1937-38); the February 28 Incident (1947); the Cultural Revolution (1966-76); Tiananmen Square (1989); and the Handover of Hong Kong (1997). He identifies two primary modes of restaging historical violence: centripetal trauma, or violence inflicted from the outside that inspires a reexamination of the Chinese nation, and centrifugal trauma, which, originating from within, inspires traumatic narratives that are projected out onto a transnational vision of global dreams and, sometimes, nightmares. These modes allow Berry to connect portrayals of mass violence to ideas of modernity and the nation. He also illuminates the relationship between historical atrocity on a national scale and the pain experienced by the individual; the function of film and literature as historical testimony; the intersection between politics and art, history and memory; and the particular advantages of modern media, which have found new means of narrating the burden of historical violence. As Chinese artists began to probe previously taboo aspects of their nation's history in the final decades of the twentieth century, they created texts that prefigured, echoed, or subverted social, political, and cultural trends. A History of Pain acknowledges the far-reaching influence of this art and addresses its profound role in shaping the public imagination and conception-as well as misconception-of modern Chinese history.
