Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious study explores how important darkness--artificial darkness--was, as an actual technology, in producing not just photographs but visual novelties and experiments in cinema in the nineteenth century. The study plays out against a backdrop of urban history, where most scholars have focused on the growth of artificial light and the electrification of cities. Elcott’s study challenges that approach. In considering zones of darkness, it ranges from the sites of production (darkrooms, studios) to those of reception (theaters/cinemas/arcades) that shaped modern media and perceptions. He argues that, in the nineteenth century, the avant-garde was often less interested in the filmed image than in everything surrounding it: the screen, the projected light, the darkness, the experience of disembodiment. He argues that darkness has a history separate from night, evil, or the color black, and has a specifically modern manifestation as a media technology. We are all aware of the "velvet light trap” in photography, but at the heart of this book are technologies of darkness crucial to cinema that were commonly known as "the black screen,” but have, over time, faded from the storied discourse.

What was it like for a young child to live through those years of conflict and carnage in the Netherlands? Angelina Fast-Vlaar shares a tender, personal story of her impressions, questions, and panic against the backdrop of a loving extended family, living just thirty kilometres from the enemy border. She observes her parents deal with the Hitler-induced restrictions and atrocities with courage, resilience, and an unshakable faith in a loving God, while at the same time reaching out to provide food and shelter to the starving and homeless. The deafening noise of battle echoes on, as she innocently plays with siblings and cousins in their somewhat-protected back yard. “This moving, true story, written by a skilled writer, deserves a place on the bookshelf of every home.” —Sense “Stan” de Jong, former business manager of the Christian weekly Calvinist Contact/Christian Courier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have polluted our planet Earth with light. Light pollution – excessive and obtrusive artificial light, with bright neon and LED lights in our cities and in our personal space, continuously illuminated and artificial – has removed something incredibly valuable from our lives, and at the same time affected our ability to sleep, rest, and relax. 'Falling in Love with Darkness' is Osho’s attempt to bring us again in contact with darkness, but here in a spiritual and psychological context. "Why do we desire light?," he asks. "Why do we hanker so much for light? Perhaps we never realize that the desire for light is a symbol of the fear rooted within us; it is a symbol of fear. We want light so that we can become free of that fear." The mind is afraid in the dark. The fear of darkness is based on the fear of being alone: the fear of being alone comes together with the fear of darkness. Darkness has its own bliss; without falling in love with darkness, you will be deprived of the capacity to love the great truths of life. Next time you find yourself in darkness, take a direct look into it and you will discover that it is not so frightening after all. When darkness surrounds you, become absorbed in it, become one with it. And you will find that darkness offers you something that light can never give you. All the important mysteries of life are hidden in darkness. These are talks by Osho given at a meditation camp where he introduces people in a direct and practical way to an understanding of meditation as a way to get acquainted with darkness, to re-discover that darkness is peace, relaxation, and stillness, all through the simple method of witnessing. "Meditation means: discovering the one who is beyond all happening and has never been a part of anything."

Book excerpt: This book deals with the process of negotiation with the past in the present through the plays of Marina Carr. The title frames the work, connoting the path towards destruction and the sense of lethargy acquired along the way. The book offers an in-depth and extensive reading of Carr's plays. In doing so, it surveys some of the destructive issues represented in the works and provides a series of social and cultural contexts to which the concerns in the works are related. Carr is best known for her trilogy, The Mai, Portia Coughlan and By the Bog of Cats..., and more recently Woman and Scarecrow, The Cordelia Dream and Marble. The plays are regularly concerned with notions of identity in the context of self-destruction, self-estrangement and displacement. This book applies Julia Kristeva's theory of abjection to Carr's plays in an effort to structure the loss the author identifies in the works. Themes of memory, history and myth are examined in the context of these concerns in provocative and confrontational ways.
