Download or read book Mozart's Ghosts written by Mark Everist and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-11 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mozart's Ghosts traces the many lives of this great composer that emerged following his early death in 1791. Crossing national boundaries and traversing two hundred years-worth of interpretation and reception, author Mark Everist investigates how Mozart's past status can be understood as part of today's veneration. Everist forges new paths to reach the composer, examining a number of ways in which Western culture has absorbed the idea of Mozart, how various cultural agents have appropriated, deployed, and exploited Mozart toward both authoritarian and subversive ends, and how the figure of Mozart and his impact illuminate the cultural history of the last two centuries in Europe, England, and America. Modern reverence for the composer is conditioned by earlier responses to his music, and Everist argues that such earlier responses are more complex than allowed by a simple "reception studies" model. Closely linking nine case studies in an innovative cultural and theoretical framework, the book approaches the developing reputation of the composer from death to the present day along three paths: "Phantoms of the Opera" deals with stage music, "Holy Spirits" addresses the trope of the sacred, and "Specters at the Feast" considers the impact of Mozart's music in literature and film. Mozart's Ghosts adeptly moves the study of Mozart reception away from hagiography and closer to cultural and historical criticism, and will be avidly read by Mozart scholars and students of eighteenth-century music history, as well as literary critics, historians of philosophy and aesthetics, and cultural historians in general.
Book Synopsis Black Woman's Emotional Truth by : Jane Uzochukwu
Download or read book Black Woman's Emotional Truth written by Jane Uzochukwu and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In life there are so many truths we tend to hide. So many emotions we will never let out. Veronica would never tell her husband the truth behind his lost money or her supposed attack. Neither will Richard tell his wife that he still has other children outside the marriage. It is not their place to tell, they will try to convince themselves. If fate hides it for them why should they exhume it? Neither will I ever tell Dafe that the reason why I proposed to him is because my supposed prince charming, the man I thought was the answer to my prayers ended up being a broke pimp who lived off a wealthy single mother. Abbey will never tell Ashe` that he may never stop dating Lillian as long as he remained working in his present company even though he swears he really does love her. And maybe he does. Veronica has gained a new voice that spurs her on to fight for her liberation and self actualization. This voice has given her the valour, profound strength, and prowess to balance her life in order to make her marriage work and to seek peace and tranquillity. She has learnt a new truth what she felt before and what she feels afterwards may never be revealed to the world. She might smile, she might scorn, but her true emotions and feelings will always remain protected, locked and hidden within. For that is the black woman's emotional truth, she most often never lets it show.

Book Synopsis Ossa Latinitatis Sola Ad Mentem Reginaldi Rationemque by : Reginaldus Thomas Foster
Download or read book Ossa Latinitatis Sola Ad Mentem Reginaldi Rationemque written by Reginaldus Thomas Foster and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginners and experts alike will find a complete immersion into the workings and nature of the Latin language embodied in the incomparable, insuperable epistles of the great Marcus Tullius Cicero, something which other commentators pass over or scorn. This second volume puts “meat on the bones” of the Latin language presented in the first volume: Ossa Latinitatis Sola: The Mere Bones of Latin. The personal letters of Cicero provide ample meat to enflesh the skeletal structure of the language, thus the title: Ossium Carnes Multae: The Bones’ Meats Abundant from the epistles of Marcus Tullius Cicero. Part 1 presents 51 complete letters from the Tyrell-Purser text. Facing each letter is an image of its oldest manuscript edition as early as the ninth century, which are preserved and guarded in the Medicea Laurentiana library in Florence, Italy, witnessing to the human hand preserving this monument of world heritage for over two millennia. Part 2 follows with a most careful rendition into English of Tully’s living, telephone-like Latin discourse. A thorough treatment and explanation of noteworthy elements of his natural talk follows with numerous references to the Encounters in Volume I. All this has students, learners, teachers, experts of the Latin language in mind and is humbly designed to deepen the understanding and appreciation of specific expressions and peculiarities of Cicero’s language itself. Part 3 provides 500 sentences consisting of from 1 to 5 words and suited for the beginnings or continuation of Latin conversations: 200 declarations, 100 questions, 100 exclamations, 100 injunctions drawn from his letters. The volume is amply indexed. All this has been done to enhance the study and use of Latin, to popularize Cicero’s correspondence, to prepare the reader for Volume III which will deal again with the letters and their usefulness for Latin conversation.

Book Synopsis Volume 16, Tome II: Kierkegaard's Literary Figures and Motifs by : Katalin Nun
Download or read book Volume 16, Tome II: Kierkegaard's Literary Figures and Motifs written by Katalin Nun and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Kierkegaard is perhaps known best as a religious thinker and philosopher, there is an unmistakable literary element in his writings. He often explains complex concepts and ideas by using literary figures and motifs that he could assume his readers would have some familiarity with. This dimension of his thought has served to make his writings far more popular than those of other philosophers and theologians, but at the same time it has made their interpretation more complex. Kierkegaard readers are generally aware of his interest in figures such as Faust or the Wandering Jew, but they rarely have a full appreciation of the vast extent of his use of characters from different literary periods and traditions. The present volume is dedicated to the treatment of the variety of literary figures and motifs used by Kierkegaard. The volume is arranged alphabetically by name, with Tome II covering figures and motifs from Gulliver to Zerlina.
