Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margery Allingham’s Mr Campion finds himself a fish out of water when he investigates a murder in a Yorkshire mining village. Following the death of the senior English master in a tragic road accident, Mr Campion’s son Rupert and daughter-in-law Perdita are helping out at Ash Grange School for Boys, where Perdita’s godfather is headmaster. While Perdita is directing the end-of-term play, a musical version of Dr Faustus, Rupert is tackling the school’s rugby football team – and both of them are finding their allotted tasks more of a challenge than they had anticipated. When the headmaster telephones Albert Campion to inform him that Rupert has been arrested, Mr Campion heads to Yorkshire to get to the bottom of the matter. There are no secrets in the traditional mining village of Denby Ash, he’s told – but on uncovering reports of a disruptive poltergeist, a firebrand trade unionist, a missing conman and a local witch, he finds that’s far from being the case. And was the English master, Mr Browne’s, death really an accident . . .?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1960, the authors of Family and Kinship in East London then made an intensive study of a middle-class dormitory suburb. Here families were more often on their own than in the East End, but, despite the differences between the districts, there were some similarities. The bond between mother and married daughter was almost as strong in the suburb as in the city. Most old people, too, were cared for in both places by their children and other relatives, though the authors show how serious were the special problems of the aged in this suburban setting. The enquiry examined the influence of social class upon community life. This is reviewed in relation to club and church membership and to friendship patterns, and the behaviour of middle and working-class people to each other is discussed. Class tensions, and their effect on the otherwise friendly and neighbourly atmosphere that the authors found in the suburb, provide the main theme of the final chapters.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1967, Time of One’s Own asks the question: How do young Scots spend their free time nowadays? The Kilbrandon Council asked the University of Glasgow to undertake a study on this subject and their conclusions form the subject of this book. ‘Young Scots’ were confined to those aged fifteen to nineteen, and in the main to those living in three localities which it was hoped were reasonably typical – a mining town in West Lothian and, in Glasgow, an old inner area and a new outlying housing estate. Some three thousand boys and girls provided facts and views. In addition to statistical material the study constantly refers to the ‘how and why’ of the way in which the individual youngster spent their free time. The adults who collected the information agreed that what they saw of the leisure of these adolescents lacked variety and sparkle. On the other hand, a considerable proportion of the boys and girls appeared to be on the brink of using it in less stereotyped ways. Just a little push might have done the trick. In general, the provision for recreation was inadequate. This was especially so in the case of indoor facilities. The Youth Service, which should play so important a role, required far more support. This is a valuable record from the time of what it was like to have ‘Time of One’s Own’, and this reissue is a fascinating addition to all those interested in the history of Education and Sociology.

Book excerpt: An elderly sex-pest is at large in DI Purbright’s home town. Leaping out from behind bushes at unsuspecting females, making lewd suggestions and, when challenged, scuttling away with odd off-balance leaps, he soon earns the nickname of the ‘Flaxborough crab’. No one can identify him, and it turns out that quite a few older gentlemen have begun exhibiting over-familiar behavior around the opposite sex. Suave Dr Meadow knows more than he is letting on, yet how can Purbright, aided once again by the fragrant but dodgy Miss Lucy Teatime, get him to talk? Events take a darker turn before the ill-assorted pair succeed in catching their crab. Witty and a little wicked, Colin Watson’s tales offer a mordantly entertaining cast of characters and laugh-out-loud wordplay. What people are saying about the Flaxborough series: "Colin Watson wrote the best English detective stories ever. They work beautifully as whodunnits but it's really the world he creates and populates ... and the quality of the writing which makes these stories utterly superior." "The Flaxborough Chronicles are satires on the underbelly of English provincial life, very well observed, very funny and witty, written with an apt turn of phrase ... A complete delight." "If you have never read Colin Watson - start now. And savour the whole series." "Light-hearted, well written, wickedly observed and very funny - the Flaxborough books are a joy. Highly recommended." "How English can you get? Watson's wry humour, dotty characters, baddies who are never too bad, plots that make a sort of sense. Should I end up on a desert island Colin Watson's books are the ones I'd want with me." "A classic of English fiction... Yes, it is a crime novel, but it is so much more. Wonderful use of language, wry yet sharp humour and a delight from beginning to end." "Colin Watson threads some serious commentary and not a little sadness and tragedy within his usual excellent satire on small town morality and eccentricities." "If you enjoy classic mysteries with no graphic violence and marvellously well drawn characters then give the Flaxborough series a try - you will not be disappointed." Editorial reviews: "Watson has an unforgivably sharp eye for the ridiculous." New York Times "Flaxborough is Colin Watson's quiet English town whose outward respectability masks a seething pottage of greed, crime and vice ... Mr Watson wields a delightfully witty pen dripped in acid." Daily Telegraph "Arguably the best of comic crime writers, delicately treading the line between wit and farce ... Funny, stylish and good mysteries to boot." Time Out "A great lark, full of preposterous situations and pokerfaced wit." Cecil Day-Lewis "One of the best. As always with Watson, the writing is sharp and stylish and wickedly funny!" Literary Review "The rarest of comic crime writers, one with the gift of originality." Julian Symons "Flaxborough, that olde-worlde town with Dada trimmings." Sunday Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a tale about a club for eccentrics that exists under the guise of an academic establishment; Yoxford University. Through its history dating back to 1791 it accumulated great wealth. The university came to the attention of the press some years ago and was dubbed the home of the strange, the deranged and a small fortune. The university was only in the public eye for a few days then all returned to normal and no more was thought of the press reports, no more that is until the recent death of Professor Extraordinarius, Richard Chaleskins. The professor died a very bizarre death and apparently by his own hand. This was shocking enough for all on campus but they were shocked further the next morning when many received a package in the post that Professor Charleskins had apparently posted just before he took his own life. The packages contained copies of a book he had written and had had privately and secretly printed. The book contained cloaked warnings that the historical press reports of Yoxfords small fortune had attracted the interest of organised crime and that the university was about to be stung, stung to death. To add emphasis to his warning the copy he sent the universitys dean he renamed for whom the horn honks, it honks for thee Basil Friggwynt-Witt. Will this be the end of Yoxford University or will the old adage The Lord looks after fools and Englishmen prove true.

Michael Quinion's Why is Q Always Followed By U? is full of surprising discoveries, entertaining quotations and memorable information. There are plenty of colourful stories out there, but Michael Quinion will help you discover the truth that lies behind the cock-and-bull stories and make sure you're always linguistically on the ball.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly thirty years George Torkildsen’s classic textbook has been the most comprehensive and engaging introduction to sport and leisure management available to students at all levels. Now in a fully revised sixth edition, it is still the only textbook that covers all the key topics taught within contemporary sport and leisure management courses. This new edition includes expanded coverage of the practical managerial skills that students must develop if aiming for a career in the sport and leisure industry, from planning and managing people to marketing and entrepreneurship. It includes five completely new chapters on leisure in the home, financial management, quality management and law and enterprise, reflecting important developments in contemporary sport and leisure. This edition retains the hallmark strengths of previous editions, including in-depth discussion of the social and cultural context of sport and leisure, full analysis of the public, private and voluntary sectors, and a review of key products and services, including sport, tourism, the arts, play and leisure in the natural environment. Richly illustrated throughout with up-to-date evidence, data, case-studies and international examples, each chapter also contains a range of useful pedagogical features, such as discussion questions, practical tasks and structured guides to further reading and resources. For the first time, a dedicated companion website offers additional teaching and learning resources for students and lecturers. Visit the companion website at www.routledge.com/textbooks/taylor
