Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divina Commedia of Dante Alighieri The twdve years which have elapsed since the first publication of my work have been fruitful in Dante literature. I may instance, in particular, Mr. Vernon's instructive Readings in the Inferno and the Purgatorio - soon, I hope, to be followed by those in the Paradiso Dr. Moore's valuable Studies in the Divina Commedia, and his Oxford Dante; Mr. Toynbee's excellent Index thereto, and his no less excellent Dante Dictionary; and Mr. Gardner's Dante's Ten Heavens; remarkable for its insight into the Theology of the Mystics, and its exposition of the functions attributed in Dante's time to the several Orders of the Angelic Hierarchies. To turn from our own country - the Italian Dante Society, the Giornale Dantesco, and such scholars as (to name but two out of many) Signori Del Lungo and Scherillo, have made important contributions to the study of the times, life and works of the divine Poet Dr. Scartazzini has conferreda boon on Students by his Enciclopedia Dantesca; and we are indebted to America for Mr. Fay's most useful concordance of the Divina Commedia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inscriptions From Dante's Divina Commedia in the Streets of Florence The "Commune" of Florence has put up inscriptions from Dante's Commedia to mark all the places mentioned in the great epic and all the sites, where stood the houses of the families alluded to. Many of the verses convey but little or no meaning to one, who is not familiar with every line and every word of the famous poem. I have therefore compiled this little guide-book to explain the "inscriptions from Dante in the streets of Florence" for those who have not the time to study them themselves. Book Synopsis La Divina Commedia by : Dante Alighieri
Download or read book La Divina Commedia written by Dante Alighieri and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from La Divina Commedia: The Divine Comedy As to the form and phrasing of this translation, a few explanations seem desirable. This is a line-for-line translation retaining the original rime-form, - terza rima, or triple rime. In using the expression "line-for-line translation," it is not meant to imply that every line will be found in the translation in the exact place where it is found in the original. The substance of every sentence or paragraph presents itself to the translator as material to be freely rehandled in accordance with the exigencies of the rime and the requirements of English idiom. It will be found that the number of lines in every canto of the translation corresponds to that of the original. In conformity with the genius of our language and the practice of our poets, the Italian hendecasyllabic line is rendered by the normal English line of ten syllables. As almost every Italian word ends with a vowel sound, the feminine or double rime, involving a line of eleven syllables, is normal in that language. To what issue the attempt to transplant the Italian eleven-syllable line into English leads, has been shown by the experiment of Lee-Hamilton with the Inferno. Like other poets of our tongue, I have introduced the eleven-syllable lines here and there, sometimes in considerable numbers, with a view to special expressiveness. With respect to the choice of the English triple rime, I will frankly admit that the late Professor Charles Eliot Norton very strongly, although very kindly, advised me against it. Certainly there was little to encourage one in the results attained by those who had previously attempted to render the Poem in this form. To argue that because no one had succeeded with terza rima in English, failure was necessarily a foregone conclusion, seemed to me a plain begging of the question. The glory of Him who moves everything peneo trates through the universe, and shines in one part more and in another less. Download or read book Dante Alighieri (Classic Reprint) written by Paget Toynbee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dante Alighieri This little book lays no claim to originality, and makes no pretence to learning or research. It is addressed rather to the so-called general reader than to the serious Dante student. The narrative is taken largely from the pages of Villani, Boccaccio, and from other similar sources. The reader will find fiction (at any rate from the critics point of view) as well as fact in these pages, but he will, I hope, be at no loss to distinguish between the two. The legends and traditions which hang around the name of a great personality are a not unimportant element in bis biography, and may sometimes serve to place him as well as, if not better than, the more sober estimates of the serious historian. I have not, therefore, thought it outside the scope of this sketch of Dante's life to include some of the anecdotes which at an early date began to he associated with bis name, though certain of them demonstrably belong to a far earlier period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dante's Divina Commedia: Translated Into English Prose Tms prose translation of the Divina Commedia is intended primarily for readers who are not acquainted with Italian, and it is for their sake that the brief footnotes which accompany it have been added. I am in hopes, however, that it may also be found serviceable by students of the original work, and for their guidance the numbers of the lines of Dante's poem have been introduced in the page-headings. In making this translation my aim has been to render the Poet's meaning as fully and clearly as was in my power without adhering too literally to the words; and at the same time to present the poem in a fairly readable form. A similar task has already been undertaken by capable hands, and certainly I have no wish to challenge comparison with their work; but apology seems hardly necessary for renewing the attempt, because every one may without presumption hope to contribute some thing towards the more perfect translation of the future. While I have been engaged on this, I have abstained from consulting other English translations; but occasionally words. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Translation of the Divina Commedia of Dante Alighieri Examination, it was received in lapse of time with universal applause and general enthusiasm, as being the foundation and ornament of the Italian language, and the admiration of all enlightened nations. Some of the most illustrious prelates of the Church, and cardinals too, translated the poem in Latin, and extolled its merit and glory in raptures of joy and praise; and even many passages thereof have been Often cited in the pulpit by several of the most pious and eloquent preachers of Italy. The entire work is teeming with vehement censure, philosophic acrimony, and poignant satire against impiety, injus tice, and tyranny, or any oppression, or encroachment against the natural and rational rights and liberties of man. He severely attacked and exposed some abuses, that became too prevalent in monastic institutions, contrary to their original foundation and the true spirit Of the Church. He was also Of Opinion, and expresses it in all his works, that poverty and humility would much more redound to the glory and prosperity of the Catholic Church, than too much temporal power and worldly grandeur.
