Book Synopsis Negotiating the Boundaries of Belonging by : Nils Witte
Download or read book Negotiating the Boundaries of Belonging written by Nils Witte and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nils Witte explores Turkish migrants’ destigmatization strategies and investigates their legal and symbolic motives for naturalisation. Using mixed methods and unique data the author shows that Turkish migrants’ inclination to naturalise would be stronger if they were allowed to retain their former citizenship and if they were recognized as symbolic members of German society. Minority members enjoy expansive rights as permanent residents and many are entitled to hold German citizenship. However, they often experience symbolic exclusion making symbolic membership a rare motive for naturalisation.
Book Synopsis Which Factors Determine the Success Or Failure of Startup Companies? A Startup Ecosystem Analysis of Hungary, Germany and the US by : Christoph Kotsch
Download or read book Which Factors Determine the Success Or Failure of Startup Companies? A Startup Ecosystem Analysis of Hungary, Germany and the US written by Christoph Kotsch and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As more and more startup companies are founded every year worldwide, building up one’s own business does not get easier. Since 9 out of 10 startups fail, future entrepreneurs are well advised to take a look at potential reasons for failure and success. Learning from others’ mistakes and studying success stories can improve their own performance and help to avoid critical errors. The academic paper at hand will provide valuable insights for entrepreneurs. It not only states the most important terms concerning startups but also lists the most important factors for a startup company’s success, according to literature review. Delineating both internal and external factors, this thesis not only delivers a synoptic view of potential challenges inside a startup as well as in its ecosystem, but also juxtaposes these influences in opposition. The second part of this paper analyzes a series of interviews with twelve startup founders from three different regions (the province of North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany, Budapest in Hungary and the state of California in the US). Their views and experiences will be summarized and put into the context of their respective startup ecosystem.
Book Synopsis Muslim Women in Austria and Germany Doing and Undoing Gender by : Constanze Volkmann
Download or read book Muslim Women in Austria and Germany Doing and Undoing Gender written by Constanze Volkmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constanze Volkmann develops an innovative new gender theory labeled doing and undoing gender. Based on empirical findings she examines the highly debated intersection of gender and Islam. The analysis of interviews with various Muslim women unravels the many different ways in which gender is done and undone. Especially with regard to potential gender hierarchies, the results reveal that the category ‘gender’ is irrelevant to many Muslim women and is even used as a means to foster their status and power as women. This book makes a substantial contribution to a differentiated social debate at eye level with Muslim women.

Book Synopsis The Sociolinguistics of Narrative by : Joanna Thornborrow
Download or read book The Sociolinguistics of Narrative written by Joanna Thornborrow and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to appraise sociolinguistic work devoted to the form and function of storytelling and to examine in detail the ways in which narrative constitutes a fundamental discursive resource across a range of contexts. The chapters presented here bring together some of the most recent work in the theory and practice of narrative analysis from a broad sociolinguistic perspective. They address some of the questions left implicit whenever stories are brought within the analytic frame of sociolinguistics: What exactly do we mean by 'story'?; what kind of social and contextual variations can determine the production and shape of situated stories, and what are the core elements of narrative as a discursive unit and interactional resource?; how is the relationship between narrative discourse and social context articulated in the construction of cultural identities? The data come both from institutional settings such as workplaces, courtrooms, schools, and the media, as well as from informal everyday settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Intralingual Translation provides the first comprehensive overview of intralingual translation, or the rewording or rewriting of a text. This Handbook aims to examine intralingual translation from every possible angle. The introduction gives an overview of the theoretical, political, and ideological issues involved and is followed by the first section which investigates intralingual translation from a diachronic perspective covering the modernization of classical texts. Subsequent sections consider different dialects and registers and intralingual translation from one language mode to another, explore concepts such as self-translating, transediting, and the role of copyeditors, and investigate the increasing interest in the role of intralingual translation and second language learning. Final sections examine recent developments in intralingual translation such as the subtitling of speech for the hard-of-hearing, simultaneous Easy Language interpreting, and respeaking in parliamentary debates. By providing an in-depth study on intralingual translation, the Handbook sheds light on other important areas of translation that are often bypassed, including publishing practices, authorship, and ideological constraints. Authored by a range of established and new voices in the field, this is the essential guide to intralingual translation for advanced students and researchers of translation studies.

Book Synopsis Adverbial Relations in Turkish-German Bilingualism by : Seda Yilmaz Wörfel
Download or read book Adverbial Relations in Turkish-German Bilingualism written by Seda Yilmaz Wörfel and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2022 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Turkish language in diaspora is in process of change due to different language constellations of immigrants and the dominance of majority languages. This led to a great interest in various research areas, particularly in linguistics. Against this background, this study focuses on developmental change in the use of adverbial clause-combining constructions in Turkish-German bilingual students' oral and written text production. It illustrates the use of non-finite constructions and some unique alternative strategies to express adverbial relations with authentic examples in Turkish and German. The findings contribute to a better understanding of how bilingual competencies vary in expressing adverbial relations depending on language contact and extra-linguistic factors. Dr. Seda Yilmaz Wörfel completed a Ph.D. in German linguistics at the University of Potsdam, Germany. She works as a research associate at the Mercator-Institute for Literacy and Language Education at the University of Cologne. Her research interests are Turkish-German Bilingualism, Second Language Acquisition, Multiliteracy and Language Contact.
