Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1815, Denmark and Britain have lived in peace with each other. From the last half of the 19th century, massive British imports of Danish agricultural products gave Britain a central role in the Danish economy, likewise in the 20th century, British efforts in the two world wars became of crucial importance to Denmark's position in relation to Germany and, later, the Soviet Union. In the same period, the emergence of English as the first foreign language in Denmark facilitated the increasingly closer human and cultural contacts between the two countries. Britain and Denmark, written by Danish and British historians, constitutes the first attempt to provide a comprehensive picture of the roles that these two neighbouring countries have played in the lives of each other during the last two centuries. They are different in size and have had very different global and regional orientations. So, naturally, Britain has always loomed larger in Danish life and politics than the other way round. In many areas, however, relations have been close. The book covers contacts relating to trade, security policies and social and political theory, but also touch on mutual influences within the areas of literature, music, design etc. Most treatments of Danish political and cultural relations with the outside world in this period concentrate on Germany for the period up to 1945, and on the Soviet Union and the USA in the post-war world. In the same way, works on British contemporary history rarely devote much space to relations with the Nordic countries. The aim, therefore, of this book is to provide a supplement, and perhaps corrective, to the existing literature on the international positions of Britain and Denmark in the modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Diplomatic History has turned into one of the most dynamic and innovative areas of research – especially with regard to early modern history. It has shown that diplomacy was not as homogenous as previously thought. On the contrary, it was shaped by a multitude of actors, practices and places. The handbook aims to characterise these different manifestations of diplomacy and to contextualise them within ongoing scientific debates. It brings together scholars from different disciplines and historiographical traditions. The handbook deliberately focuses on European diplomacy – although non-European areas are taken into account for future research – in order to limit the framework and ensure precise definitions of diplomacy and its manifestations. This must be the prerequisite for potential future global historical perspectives including both the non-European and the European world.

Book excerpt: Diplomats had multiple tasks: not only negotiating with the representatives of other states, but also mediating culture and knowledge, and not least elaborating reports on their observations of politics, society, and culture. Culture, according to the studies featured in this book, is defined as a complex sphere including aspects like systems of communication, literature, music, arts, education, and the creation of knowledge. This edition containing contributions from six conferences held in Vienna and Istanbul by the Don Juan Archiv Wien focuses on the complex diplomatic and cultural relations between the Ottoman Empire and Europe from the time of the early embassies to Istanbul up to "Tanzimat".

Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: International relations, grade: 90.00, , language: English, abstract: For a country’s success, branding is obliged, that’s the reason that in the present book, we are going to explore what branding is and how a country can earn benefits in the most effective way. Branding nowadays is more than a logo, it signifies the emotional reaction a country can stimulate from its clients. Because, the brand is the set of perceptions that investors have about the country, branding is the set of actions undertaken to cultivate that brand. In order to compete more effectively in the global economy, the countries started using brand management techniques. In order for a country to attract global investors, the country needs to claim a divergent brand positioning in the minds of the investors. The most successful nations in the world have a clear image that helps them become irresistible to investors. Investors, far from just basing their decisions on functional advantages and opportunities, they invest in countries with a clear identity that shows commitment to its development in a professional way. A clear brand image for the nation helps to attract global investors in the international arena, sustain them and a halo effect will boost its products, tourism etc. As nations compete for investments in the global marketplace, the best way to achieve distinctiveness, attractiveness and even irreplaceability is to root the nation’s image on biological concepts that transcend time and cultures. Tools such as the Wheel of Motives leverage the advances in modern disciplines such as biology, neuroscience, cognitive science, bio - semiotics etc. can capture with precision the DNA of a country and build a true-to-self, authentic and irresistible strategy to attract investors. Branding is the way a country creates a favorable reputation through communication efforts. Country branding is the process of applying business branding techniques to stimulate countries. The main objective of country branding is to build and manage the reputation of a country. Facing the challenges of an increasingly complex world the existence of cultural commonalities and universal values all cultures share and intercultural sensitivity within groups surfaces the way for acceptance and tolerance of other cultures and allows members to be open to values which are universal among all groups, such as law and justice, which globalized society should then build upon together.

Book excerpt: Histories of Public Diplomacy and Nation Branding in the Nordic and Baltic Countries provides an historical perspective on public diplomacy and nation branding in the Nordic and Baltic countries from 1900 to the present day. It highlights continuity and change in the efforts to strategically represent these nations abroad, and shows how a self-understanding of being peripheral has led to similarities in the deployed practices throughout the Nordic-Baltic region. Edited by Louis Clerc, Nikolas Glover and Paul Jordan, the volume examines a range of actors that have attempted to influence foreign opinions and strengthen their country’s political and commercial position. Variously labelled propaganda, information, diplomacy and branding, these constant efforts to enhance the national image abroad have affected how the nation has been imagined in the domestic context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music has long played a prominent role in cultural diplomacy, but until now no resource has comparatively examined policies that shape how non-western countries use music for international relations. Ethnomusicology and Cultural Diplomacy, edited by scholars David G. Hebert and Jonathan McCollum, demonstrates music's role in international relations worldwide. Specifically, this book offers "insider" views from expert contributors writing about music as a part of cultural diplomacy initiatives in Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Syria, Japan, China, India, Vietnam, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Nigeria. Unique features include the book’s emphasis on diverse legal frameworks, decolonial perspectives, and cultural policies that serve as a basis for how nations outside “the west” use music in their relationships with Europe and North America.
