Book excerpt: Instead of living at home and attending junior college, why couldn't he be looking out at the New York City skyline even if he were crashing in a cheap loft, broke and hungry. God! There had to be some way that he could get the cash to swing a life of his own. Mort Carmody is a green freshman at Southcoast Junior College in Southern California. He wants to escape his parents' desire for him to be an accountant, and he longs to win the heart of Fredericka McShay, the girl of his dreams. Mort's dad informs him that his chances of becoming a film director are about equal to those of becoming a rock star or an astronaut. But Mort has a plan. Unfortunately, he hasn't factored in the competing ambitions of his kinky professor, some slow-witted but calculating bodybuilders, and an adult film actress with an agenda of her own. It's a wild ride from the school dance to the county jail, to an auto-wrecking yard, and even to a double wedding.

Book excerpt: I feel my heart racing when I see his face. I lose all my words when he smiles at me. My best moments are alone in my bed when I dream of him. He's my best friend. I feel intoxicated by his touch. Suffocation when he's near. Motivated when I see his girlfriend, to let him know I'm the one. His name is Jason. It's confession time. I'm in love with my best friend. My name is Melissa, and I've been best friends with Jason since grade school. It's now senior year, and I'm determined to let him know how I feel about him. With the help of Cupid and my friend, Kerri, I hope to find the words to tell him how I feel. The feelings that I have for this man is unexplainable. I desire him in a way that makes me re-think my good girl status. He makes it so easy loving him with his charming, sweet, and gentlemen ways. I can't take being in the friends zone with him anymore. Girlfriend or not, I need his undivided attention. It's wrong to have this much lust for one individual person. I never been kissed. Never been touched, and yet have this undeniable desire for him to be the first everything. I'm stingy and selfish wanting him to leave her altogether. It's senior year, and I'm not stopping, until he's mine.

Book Synopsis The Ballets of Ludwig Minkus by : Robert Ignatius Letellier
Download or read book The Ballets of Ludwig Minkus written by Robert Ignatius Letellier and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The composer Ludwig Minkus represents one of music’s biggest mysteries. Who was he? Hardly anything is known about him, and yet he occupied an influential position in the theatres of the Imperial ballet in late nineteenth-century Russia. He has been recognised as a predecessor of Tchaikovsky, but as a musician is commonly held to have been so feeble as to be beneath contempt. Yet despite the scorn heaped on him, and his consequent obscurity, Minkus is far from being forgotten. Since the early 1960s his name has slowly begun to re-surface. Two works, Don Quixote (1869) and La Bayadère (1877), have been presented in their entirety for the first time to new audiences all over the world. The musical and dramatic power of both ballets has taken people by surprise. The stories have a very real human appeal, the choreography attracts the admiration of balletomanes, and the music, with its rhythm, verve, and beauty of melody, holds attention and engages the heart wherever it is heard. This introduction seeks to discover something more behind the blank façade of Minkus’s life and work. What do we actually know about him as a man and as an artist? Are we able to apprehend his oeuvre as a whole, and how much can we establish from the available material? What is the nature of the music he created for those few works that have survived the years, and that have come to the fore again recently to delight those who have ears to hear? This study includes iconography from the life and times of the composer, many musical examples from his works, and a comprehensive bibliography and discography.
Book Synopsis The Guitar in American Banjo, Mandolin and Guitar Periodicals, 1882-1933 by : Jeffrey Noonan
Download or read book The Guitar in American Banjo, Mandolin and Guitar Periodicals, 1882-1933 written by Jeffrey Noonan and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early years of the twentieth century, O.G. Sonneck, the father of American musicology, decried the state of musical bibliography in this country, encouraging musical scholars to dedicate themselves to preserving, cataloging, and promoting the use of America’s musical ephemera, especially newspapers and magazines. Despite his century-old calls, much work in this area remains undone. This volume responds to Sonneck’s call for action by creating a bibliography of periodicals that document the use and place of the guitar in a little-known segment of America’s musical culture in the final decades of the nineteenth century through the first third of the twentieth century. Between 1880 and the mid-1930s, a unique musical movement grew and flourished in this country. Focused on the promotion of so-called “plectral instruments,” this movement promoted the banjo, the mandolin, and the guitar as cultivated instruments on a par with the classical violin or piano. The Banjo, Mandolin and Guitar (BMG) community consisted of instrument manufacturers, music publishers, professional teachers and composers, and amateur students. While some professional soloists achieved national recognition, the performing focus of the movement was ensemble work, with bands of banjos, mandolins and guitars ranging from quartets and quintets (modeled on the violin-family string ensembles) to festival orchestras of up to 400 players (mimicking the late romantic symphony orchestra). The repertoire of most ensembles included popular dances of the day as well as light classics, but more ambitious ensembles tackled Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and even Wagner. Although this movement straddled both popular and cultivated (classical) music-making, its elitist pretensions contributed to its demise in the wake of the explosive growth of modern American popular music linked to Tin Pan Alley or the blues. While the movement’s heyday spanned the early years of audio recording, only a handful of active BMG performers made recordings. As a result few musical scholars are aware of the BMG movement and its contribution to American musical culture, especially its influence on the physical and technical development of America’s instrument, the guitar The movement did, however, leave extensive traces of itself in periodicals produced by manufacturing and publishing concerns. Beginning in 1882, the leadership of the BMG movement fell to the publishers, editors, and contributors from these promotional journals, which were dedicated to the “interests of Banjoists, Mandolinists and Guitarists” While advertising dominated the pages of most of these periodicals, nearly all offered product and publication reviews, historical surveys, biographical sketches, and technical advice. In addition, the BMG magazines not only documented performances with reviews and program lists but also contained musical scores for solo instruments and plucked-string ensembles. These magazines are the primary sources which document this vibrant expression of America’s musical life. While one or two of the BMG magazines have been known by guitar scholars, most have not seen the light of day in decades. Similarly, a few of the leading guitar figures of the BMG movement—principally William Foden, Vahdah Olcott-Bickford, and George C. Krick—have been acknowledged and documented but many more remain completely anonymous. This bibliography offers access to the periodicals which help document the story of the guitar in America’s progressive era—a story of tradition and transformation—as lived and told by the guitar’s players, teachers, manufacturers, composers, and fans in the BMG movement. The bibliography consists of two large sections. The first contains a chronological list of articles, news items, advertisements, illustrations, and photographs as well as a list of musical works for guitar published in the BMG magazines. The second section of the bibliography is a series of indices which link names and subjects to the lists. With nearly 5500 entries and over 100 pages of indices, this bibliography offers researchers access to a musical world that has been locked away on library shelves for the past century.

The two of them have exclusive passes to Red, the hottest nightclub on Venice Beach. Just as the festive atmosphere begins to coax Safina into the party mood, she notices someone, or something in the rafters, shooting arrows into the crowd of unsuspecting partygoers below! Chaos erupts as Safina races to stop the attack. When she confronts Kal, one of the club's sexy owners, Safina's sure he's the attacker despite his warm reassurances and her body's hot response to his touch. Consumed with overwhelming feelings of dj vu and desire, Safina is relieved to get back home but she can't shake unsettling questions and Kal's handsome face from her mind. After their encounter at Red, Kal tracks Safina down in Chicago with questions of his own. And the answers for them both could be the key to everything they've wished for, but will Safina accept the truth and can Kal trust his heart? Excerpt: "Are you alright?" Lynn yelled, coming over to her. Safina rubbed her temples, trying to talk over the noise. "I think I need to take a break. I'm going to the bathroom." "I'll go with you." "No, you stay. Your guy can actually dance. I'll be right back." Safina smiled weakly at her friend before weaving through the mass of bodies. At least she shared the same shoe size as Lynn, but the heels were higher than she preferred. Relieved to finally see the bathroom sign, Safina cursed when someone bumped into her from the side. She turned to see the rude person responsible for her possibly bruised shoulder, but no one paid her any attention. Looking heavenward in exasperation, Safina noticed something flashing overhead in the open ceiling design of the club. She narrowed her gaze and sucked in a quick breath. What the-? Someone was up there! Moving toward the bathroom door and away from the rest of the crowd, Safina looked up again and gasped in surprise. Blinking twice, she tried to make sense of what she was seeing. There was a man with wings balancing dangerously on a rafter beam about thirty feet off the ground! She watched in shocked silence as the winged man drew something from his back. A bow and arrow! Safina's mouth fell open in shock as he pulled the massive bow back and took aim at someone on the ground. Panic, icy cold and paralyzing, gripped her as she watched the arrow descend with unerring accuracy to the unsuspecting women dancing with a man. Lynn! In slow motion, Safina saw the arrow pierce Lynn's back and disappear from view. Gasping with horror, Safina dashed back toward the dance floor. "No!" Safina screamed. "No! Someone stop him!" She couldn't move fast enough and no one seemed to hear her over the thump of the loud music. Tears blinded her as she fought her way through the crowd. Safina reached Lynn, yanking her hard away from her bewildered dance partner. "Lynn!" Safina cried, looking at her friend's chest. Maybe the arrow had gone straight through. Lynn frowned. "What's wrong with you?" Safina shook her head. "I thought you were hurt. I-I saw him . . . and he shot you!" Lynn touched Safina's head. "You must be sick. I'm fine. Better than fine-" "I saw him. Look!" Safina pointed up toward the ceiling and froze when her eyes locked with the mysterious man overhead. He studied her and Safina stared back, unable to tear away her gaze. "Do you see him?" She yelled, feeling her legs start to wobble as she shook Lynn's arm. Lynn squinted up at the dark ceiling. "I don't see anything, Safina." Safina watched transfixed as the winged man leapt into the air and disappeared in a flash. A second later, she crumpled to the floor.

Book Synopsis Drama of the English Republic, 1649-60 by : Janet Clare
Download or read book Drama of the English Republic, 1649-60 written by Janet Clare and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a collection of five dramatic works originally published when English was nominally a Republic. The five texts, three of which have been edited for the first time, include The Tragedy of that Famous Roman Orator Marcus Tullius Cicero (Anonymous), Cupid and Death by James Shirley; and William Davenant's The Siege of Rhodes, The Cruelty of the Spaniards in Peru, and The History of Sir Francis Drake. In her introductory piece, editor Janet Clare (English, University College, Dublin, UK) argues that theater forced into a novel state of opposition did more than survive in reduced form; it adapted, offered oblique critiques of Caroline policies, and revealed complex and shifting alliances.
