Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Folk Dances of Jamaica is a detailed practical and theoretical discussion of five Jamaican folk dances - the Kumina, Dinkie Minie, Quadrille, Bruckin's, and Revival. The book's strength and appeal lies in the care taken to introduce, describe and illuminate in detail these dances. The book is invaluable for the student of dance, providing as it does practical information on both technique and performance, and is illustrated with bold drawings by "H" Patten. The author herself trained as a dancer and her book was researched in traditional settings in Jamaica and at the Jamaica School of Dance, where she studied after graduating in Performing Arts from Leicester Polytechnic. She has maintained a strong interest in dance, becoming Dance and Mime Officer for East Midlands Arts in the late 1980s and then General Manager for Adzido Dance Ensemble. As Arts Council England's Director of Dance from 1994 - 2003, Hilary championed the policy, development and promotion of all forms of dance nationally and internationally, before widening her expertise through leadership roles in the arts and broader cultural and creative industries.

Book excerpt: This book presents the first in-depth critical and historical examination of the internationally renowned National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC) in the context of postcolonial theatre. Combining a postcolonial theoretical framework with performance studies and dance analysis, the study examines the interrelationship of Jamaican modern dance theatre aesthetics and the Caribbean's complex cultural genealogy since 1492. Addressing issues of postcolonial nationalism and Jamaican identity politics, the book provides the first comprehensive study of the NDTC's modern dance theatre works as it situates dance theatre choreography at the centre of postcolonial independence politics and cultural theory in the Caribbean.

Book Synopsis Serious Things a Go Happen by : Maxine Walters
Download or read book Serious Things a Go Happen written by Maxine Walters and published by Hat & Beard Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unofficial history of Jamaican dance hall music told through its graphic design, Serious T’ings Gonna Happenbrings together more than 200 original posters and signs from the early 1980s through today, drawn from the poster collection of Jamaican film and television producer and director Maxine Walters. Jamaican dance hall emerged out of reggae in the late 1970s and brought with it a new visual style characterized by bright colors and bold, hand-drawn lettering. One-of-a-kind, hand-painted posters advertising local parties and concerts have become a ubiquitous part of Jamaica’s landscape, nailed (illegally) to poles and trees across the island. Over the past three decades Walters, who has been called “the queen of Jamaican dance hall signs,” has amassed a collection of some 4,000 of these street posters, advertising local "bashments" held at bars, on beaches and in primary schools. Treated by most Jamaicans as simply a fact of life, the dance hall poster has until recently received little careful, critical attention; this volume begins to rectify that with essays by Vivien Goldman and others, alongside the posters themselves, reproduced one to a page in full color. The book also includes liner notes by and interviews with Muta Baruka and Mikie Bennett of Grafton Studios, and Tony Winkler, author of The Lunatic, as well as a compilation of original dance hall tracks curated by Mikie Bennett and Rory of Stone Love.

The country is composed of three counties: Cornwall, Middlesex, and Surrey, with Kingston being the capital city. It has a population of approximately 2.7 million people and has a diverse mix of ethnic groups, including African, East Indian, Chinese, and European. Jamaica has a rich and complicated history, having been inhabited by native Arawak and Taino peoples before being colonized by Spain and eventually Britain. The island was a major producer of sugarcane and was heavily reliant on slave labor brought over from Africa. This history has greatly influenced Jamaican culture, which is known for its music, cuisine, and distinct dialect of English known as Jamaican Patois. Despite facing economic struggles and political corruption, Jamaica remains a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, and friendly locals.
