Book excerpt: It is the spring of1967 and the war in Viet Nam is spiraling out of control. Ray is on scholastic suspension from the University of Texas in Austin. He has to make a choice, get drafted and end up in Viet Nam or join the Navy Reserve. He joins the Navy Reserve and ends up in Viet Nam anyway. During his 351 days in Da Nang, he is at the Naval Support Activity on the Tien Sha peninsula as a Security guard, on the Monkey Mountain patrol, and as a NSA Investigator. While in Da Nang, he experiences rocket attacks, an ammunition dump explosion, drug deals, police raids, and the birth of his first child, Rebecca. He also makes two life long friends that contribute to this story. Cheryl, his wife of 45 years, has been a tremendous help in editing this story.
Download or read book Death Valley written by Keith Nolan and published by Presidio Press. This book was released on 2011-08-10 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a dedicated chronicler of the Vietnam War comes a vivid, insightful, grunt-level campaign history set against the backdrop of the troop withdrawal and the upheavals in American society. “The sounds and smells of the battlefield almost leap out from the printed page.”—Maj. Gen. John W. Barnes, U.S. Army (Ret.), New York City Tribune “Author of the well received Battle for Hue and Into Laos, [Keith William] Nolan once again captures the stark reality of combat in Vietnam. He tells the story of the 7th Marine Regiment and the 196th Brigade of the Army’s ‘Americal’ Division as they engaged the 2d Division of the North Vietnamese Army in the mountains and valleys southwest of Da Nang. This was the first major engagement after the announcement of the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam, and it occurred at a time when problems with drug abuse, race relations, and shifting morality were endemic in American society and the nation’s military. Nolan’s account not only takes in the combat operations, but also reflects some of these larger issues of the war.”—USNI Proceedings

Book Synopsis Vietnam War Portraits by : Thomas Sanders
Download or read book Vietnam War Portraits written by Thomas Sanders and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2020-02-29 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume honors those who experienced the Vietnam War through striking portraits and personal accounts of the conflict and its repercussions. This book offers a uniquely human perspective on the Vietnam War through portraits and stories of American veterans, southern Vietnamese veterans, and civilians. The surreal imagery of Thomas Sanders’ photography encourages the viewer to take a closer look at those who experienced the war. These images are paired with the individuals’ haunting, inspirational, and sometimes comical stories of the war. Set in a surreal jungle environment, the portraits evoke the sense of darkness and uncertainty felt by those who experienced the war. Some portrait subjects hold objects that evoke their time of service: the common cigarette pack smoked by the vets while in the jungle; a homemade grenade made by the northern Vietnamese; and the “order to report” document that changed many a life.

Book Synopsis US Marine Corps F-4 Phantom II Units of the Vietnam War by : Peter E. Davies
Download or read book US Marine Corps F-4 Phantom II Units of the Vietnam War written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five US Marine Corps squadrons flew versions of the Phantom II and 11 of them used the aircraft in South-East Asia from May 1965 through to early 1973. Rather than the air-to-air missiles that were the main component in the original F-4 armament, these aircraft carried an ever-expanding range of weaponry. Some toted 24,500-lb bombs and others strafed with up to three 20 mm gun pods, while most flew daily sorties delivering napalm, Snakeye bombs and big Zuni rockets. Many US Marines holding small outpost positions in Laos and South Vietnam against heavy Viet Cong attack owed their lives to the Phantom II pilots who repeatedly drove off the enemy. The book will examine these missions in the context of US Marine Corps close-support doctrine, using the direct experience of a selection of the aircrew who flew and organised those missions.

This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume in a series of chronological histories prepared by the Marine Corps History and Museums Division to cover the entire span of Marine Corps involvement in the Vietnam War. This volume details the Marine activities during 1965, the year the war escalated and major American combat units were committed to the conflict. The narrative traces the landing of the nearly 5,000-man 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade and its transformation into the ΙII Marine Amphibious Force, which by the end of the year contained over 38,000 Marines. During this period, the Marines established three enclaves in South Vietnam’s northernmost corps area, I Corps, and their mission expanded from defense of the Da Nang Airbase to a balanced strategy involving base defense, offensive operations, and pacification. This volume continues to treat the activities of Marine advisors to the South Vietnamese armed forces but in less detail than its predecessor volume, U.S. Marines in Vietnam, 1954-1964; The Advisory and Combat Assistance Era.
