Book excerpt: Damaged: Musicality and Race in Early American Punk is the first book-length portrait of punk as a musical style with an emphasis on how punk developed in relation to changing ideas of race in American society from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. Drawing on musical analysis, archival research, and new interviews, Damaged provides fresh interpretations of race and American society during this period and illuminates the contemporary importance of that era. Evan Rapport outlines the ways in which punk developed out of dramatic changes to America’s cities and suburbs in the postwar era, especially with respect to race. The musical styles that led to punk included transformations to blues resources, experimental visions of the American musical past, and bold reworkings of the rock-and-roll and rhythm-and-blues sounds of the late 1950s and early 1960s, revealing a historically oriented approach to rock that is strikingly different from the common myths and conceptions about punk. Following these approaches, punk itself reflected new versions of older exchanges between the US and the UK, the changing environments of American suburbs and cities, and a shift from the expressions of older baby boomers to that of younger musicians belonging to Generation X. Throughout the book, Rapport also explores the discourses and contradictory narratives of punk history, which are often in direct conflict with the world that is captured in historical documents and revealed through musical analysis.

Book excerpt: What are the psychological problems caused by modernization? How can we minimize its negative effects? Modernization has brought many material benefits to us, yet we are constantly told how unhappy we are: crime, divorce, suicide, depression and anxiety are rampant. How can this contradiction be reconciled? Damaged Life, originally published in 1996, presents a powerful and progressive analysis of modernity’s impact on the psyche. Tod Sloan develops an integrated theory of the self in society by combining perspectives on personality development and socio-historical processes to explore our complex response to modernization. He discusses the implications of postmodern theory for psychology and proposes concrete responses to address the issue of mass emotional suffering. His book should be read not only by those working within psychology and related disciplines such as sociology and social policy, but also by anyone seeking enlightenment about the predicament of the self in contemporary society.

This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of this book is based on the keynote lectures delivered during the Inter national Symposium on Anisotropic Behaviour of Damaged Materials ABDM, held in Krakow-Przegorzaiy, Poland, September 9-11, 2002. The Symposium was organized by the Solid Mechanics Division of the Institute of Mechanics and Machine Design - Cracow University of Technology, under aus pices of the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Cracow University of Technology, Prof. S. Michalowski. The Co-organizers of the ABDM Symposium were: • Martin-Luther-Universitat Halle-Wittenberg, • Centre of Excellence for Advanced Materials and Structures AMAS at the In stitute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sci ences, Warsaw, • Committee of Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw. Ten chapters of this book in their present form essentially exceed lectures de livered at the Symposium. They should rather be read as not only author's recent achievements in the field, but also the state of art and synthesis done by the lead ers in the mechanics community. The mixed formula of the Symposium, namely: the invited lectures and presentations of the original papers by the participants was used. 23 original papers, published in the Symposium Proceedings on CD, exhaust the full scope of the ABDM Symposium. The present book provides a survey of various damage models focusing on the damage response in anisotropic materials as well as damage-induced anisotropy.
Book Synopsis Behavioral Assessment and Rehabilitation of the Traumatically Brain-Damaged by : Barry A. Edelstein
Download or read book Behavioral Assessment and Rehabilitation of the Traumatically Brain-Damaged written by Barry A. Edelstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book developed out of the editors' longstanding interest in the retraining of traumatically brain-damaged adults and the management of their behavior by family members. A search for relevant experimental evidence to support the clinical use of behavioral principles for retrain ing, which began in 1977, turned up little empirical support. Moreover, the literature on retraining was dispersed among a variety of journals published in various countries. Nowhere was there a compendium of literature that addressed issues of assessment and retraining. There was no place to turn if one wanted to move from a standard neuropsy chological evaluation to the retraining of skill deficits revealed in the evaluation. We have attempted to edit a book that represents what we had hoped to find in the literature and could be used by professionals in clinical psychology, clinical neuropsychology, rehabilitation medicine, physical therapy, speech therapy, and other disciplines that address rehabilitation of brain-damaged adults-a book that addresses assess ment and rehabilitation issues and is sufficiently detailed to offer the reader a starting point in developing behavioral assessment and re habilitation programs. The book contains conceptual foundations, re views of research, descriptions of successful rehabilitation programs, and relatively detailed approaches to the retraining of specific skills. A shift from an assessment-based practice to one encompassing both prescriptive assessment and treatment has become a recognized transition in the neuropsychological literature and was best articulated in an article by Gerald Goldstein in March of 1979.

Scientists currently working in this field have contributed their work in the form of reviews, site-specific case studies, technology for bioremediation and biodegradation. The book will provide first hand information in this currently expanding field and will be helpful to biologists, environmental scientists, engineers, wastewater treatment experts, microbiologists and all those interested in the conservation and management of the environment.
Download or read book Damaged Goods written by Omar Persaud and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-05-24 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I was so anxious to lose my virginity that I never thought of all the consequences that came with it.” In this titillating personal account, Damaged Goods, author O. Persaud sums up the sultry sex life of his main character, Chris, from his first intimate experience to finding a woman that he truly loves. The "every man for himself" mentality has corrupted Chris' ideals, whether regarding friends, family, material possessions, or women. When he makes a move, he never takes other people's feelings into consideration. Therefore, he can never stay true to anyone to whom he supposedly commits. Chris believes that others are only here in this world for his benefit, and he is willing to deny peoples' needs-including his own-to obtain what he wants. Nowhere in his life is this mentality more evident than in his romantic involvements. Chris soon finds himself questioning his behavior: "Why do I cheat? And how did I become the unfaithful man that I am today?" These questions serve as the basis for his next quest in life, one that may lead to true love-if he can only find the answers. Damaged Goods provides a fresh, interesting look into the life of a young black male and his search for the nature of love.
