Book excerpt: There are two predominate modes of failure in a compressively loaded laminate that has been subjected to ballistic damage. Analysis has shown that the stress concentration and the membrane failure are sensitive to the in-plane stiffness matrix of the damaged region, while delamination growth failure is dependent on the size and location of the damage as well as the fracture toughness of the material. An experimental study investigated means of improving damage tolerance ranging from resin toughness to through-thickness stitching. From the experimental study, it was found that improving fracture toughness by through-the-thickness stitching resulted in a reduction in damage size. Stitching may cause severe reductions in stiffness of the damage region as projectile energy is absorbed through the fiber breakage and pullout mechanisms. Thus, while stitching improves multi-impact performance, it may also lead to an increase in fiber damage, causing the compression after ballistic impact (CABI) failure mode to shift from delamination growth to membrane failure. A design trade-off exists between maximum fracture toughness and stiffness reduction induced within the ballistically damaged region. By examining the factors affecting residual strength (i.e., fracture toughness, inclusion stiffness, loading condition, and finite width effects) the methodology to develop design chart may be produced to optimize damage tolerance.

Book excerpt: This ARO project from City College of City University of New York (CCNY of CUNY) was submitted in response to ARO's FY 2002 DoD Instrumentation and Research Support for Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), BAA No. DAAD19-02-R-0010 to conduct research on hybrid carbon-S2 glass fiber/toughened epoxy thick-section, hybrid interwoven composite joints subject to drop-weight and ballistic impacts. Dr. Basavaraju B. Raju of U.S. Army TACOM-TARDEC was the research collaborator and Dr. Bruce LaMattina of ARO was the program manager. The main objectives of this project are (1) to conduct tensile, drop-weight impact and ballistic impact tests of monolithic S2 glass fiber/toughened epoxy composites and hybrid carbon-S2 glass fiber/toughened epoxy composites, (2) to verify the experimental results using damage-mechanics based, 3-D dynamic nonlinear finite element method embedded in a commercial software package, LS-DYNA, (i.e., a combined experimental-numerical approach was used in the research), (3) to provide data of research results to supplement Army's current missions in the FCS, (4) to enhance the proposers' research capabilities on composites at their institute through interaction with Army researchers and facilities so that they may participate in Army's mainstream research in the future, and (5) to involve graduate and undergraduate students, especially those from underrepresented minorities, actively in the research so that they can gain meaningful research experience and may develop interest in pursuing advanced degrees in engineering. It is believed that results obtained in this study could benefit several Army missions and current interests in the development and implementation of Future Combat Systems (FCS), such as damage tolerance and ballistic impact study of composite integral armors (CIAs) for composite armored vehicles (CAVs) demonstrator, rotary-wing structures technology (RWST) for RAH-66 Comanche's lower forward fuselage demonstrator, etc.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study was to determine the failure threshold (with respect to energy level of impact) of Torlon-C/graphite/glass and APC-2 composite materials, with the samples being conditioned and tested at predetermined hygrothermal environments. A test matrix involving ply-orientations, temperature ( -60 deg F, 75 deg F, 180 deg F and 280 deg F) and humidities (15%, 50% and 100% RH) was created. For each test condition of the matrix, the failure threshold was developed by subjecting compression coupons to impact damage at various energy levels with a 12.7 mm (0.5) diameter aluminum projectile. The forward velocities used in the tests ranged from 27.4 to 152.4 m/s (90 to 500 ft/s). The behavior of composite materials under the combined effects of impact, humidity and temperature has been a topic of concern among investigators. Much of the research currently available has focused upon the effect of a single factor (e.g. impact), or the effect of humidity and temperature. The purpose of this study was to investigate the combined effect of all these factors on the degradation of laminates.

Book excerpt: This book presents a broad view of the current state of the art regarding the dynamic response of composite and sandwich structures subjected to impacts and explosions. Each chapter combines a thorough assessment of the literature with original contributions made by the authors. The first section deals with fluid-structure interactions in marine structures. The first chapter focuses on hull slamming and particularly cases in which the deformation of the structure affects the motion of the fluid during the water entry of flexible hulls. Chapter 2 presents an extensive series of tests underwater and in the air to determine the effects of explosions on composite and sandwich structures. Full-scale structures were subjected to significant explosive charges, and such results are extremely rare in the open literature. Chapter 3 describes a simple geometrical theory of diffraction for describing the interaction of an underwater blast wave with submerged structures. The second section addresses the problem of impact on laminated composite structures with chapters devoted to ballistic impacts on pre-stressed composite structures, tests developed to simulate dynamic failure in marine structures, damage mechanisms and energy absorption in low velocity impacts, perforation, the numerical simulation of intra and inter-ply damage during impact, and hail impact on laminated composites. Sandwich structures with laminated facings are considered in Section 3 with chapters dealing with the discrete modeling of honeycomb core during the indentation of sandwich structures, the behavior of fold core sandwich structures during impact, and impact on helicopter blades. The fourth section consists of two chapters presenting experimental results and numerical simulation of composite structures subjected to crash. This volume is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and engineers interested and involved in analysis and design of composite structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damage is dependent on the thickness of the laminate and is more in thicker laminates. Damage is always more towards the exit side than the entry surface. A model of bullet penetration into a composite laminate is presented and the failure due to interlaminar shear stresses was explained through this model. The model was verified using a quasi-static Finite Element analysis. It was demonstrated that outer-most ply of the laminate fails first and maximum inter-laminar shear stresses occur between two outer-most plies, causing delamination. It was also demonstrated that inter-laminar shear stresses increase progressively, as the number of effective plies in the laminate reduce due to failure and it is strongly dependent on the stacking sequence.

Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of EXPLOMETTM 2000, International Conference on Fundamental Issues and Applications of Shock-Wave and High-Strain-Rate Phenomena, held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, 2000; the fifth in the EXPLOMETTM quinquennial series which began in Albuquerque in 1980. The book is divided into five major sections with a total of 85 chapters. Section I deals with materials issues in shock and high strain rates while Section II covers shock consolidation, reactions, and synthesis. Materials aspects of ballistic and hypervelocity impact are covered in Section III followed by modeling and simulation in Section IV and a range of novel applications of shock and high-strain-rate phenomena in Section V. Like previous conference volumes published in 1980, 1985, and 1995, the current volume includes contributions from fourteen countries outside the United States. As a consequence, it is hoped that this book will serve as a global summary of current issues involving shock and high-strain-rate phenomena as well as a general reference and teaching componant for specializd curricula dealing with these features in a contemporary way. Over the past twenty years, the EXPLOMETTM Conferences have created a family of participants who not only converse every five years but who have developed long-standing interactions and professional relationships which continue to stimulate new concepts and applications particularly rooted in basic materials behavior.
