This book was released on 2002 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact responses and the damage states in flat composite sandwich panels with thin face sheets were investigated in Phase I and were found to be dependent on the diameter of the spherical steel impactor. The residual strength of impact-damaged sandwich panels under static in-plane compressive loads was reported to be dependent on the nature of the damage state. The impact damage due to blunt impactors is difficult to detect in service and depending on the size of the damage, can degrade the residual strength more than a punctured skin. The detectability of impact damage states using different field inspection techniques was experimentally investigated for different facesheet and core combinations. The impact damage in honeycomb core sandwich panels was better detected using instruments that exploit the local vibrational characteristics of the sandwich structure, while the damage in foam core panels was more amenable to acoustic-based techniques. The effect of facesheet stiffness on the sensitivity of the field inspection techniques was investigated and the results are reported. The behavior of the sandwich panels with impact damage and subjected to the in-plane static compressive loads was investigated in detail. The impact damage behaved in a characteristic sequence of events leading to contrasting final failure modes. The sequence of events was found to be dependent on the facesheet stiffness and the transverse compressive properties of the core material. The effects of panel curvature on the impact damage resistance of sandwich panels were experimentally investigated for limited sandwich configurations. The effects of the radius of cylindrical panels, boundary conditions, facesheet type, and core type were also examined. The decreasing radius of curvature increased the global bending stiffness but decreased the local contact stiffness due to the radial compressive properties of the honeycomb core.

This book was released on 1996-03-29 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major objective of this book was to identify issues related to the introduction of new materials and the effects that advanced materials will have on the durability and technical risk of future civil aircraft throughout their service life. The committee investigated the new materials and structural concepts that are likely to be incorporated into next generation commercial aircraft and the factors influencing application decisions. Based on these predictions, the committee attempted to identify the design, characterization, monitoring, and maintenance issues that are critical for the introduction of advanced materials and structural concepts into future aircraft.
Book Synopsis Fibrous Composites in Structural Design by : Edward M. Lenoe
Download or read book Fibrous Composites in Structural Design written by Edward M. Lenoe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth Conference on Fibrous Composites in Structural Design was a successor to the First-to-Third Conferences on Fibrous Composites in Flight Vehicle Design sponsored by the Air Force (First and Second Conferences, September 1973 and May 1974) and by NASA (Third Conference, November 1975) which were aimed at focusing national attention on flight vehicle applications of a new class of fiber reinforced materials, the advanced com posites, which afforded weight savings and other advantages which had not been previously available. The Fourth Conference, held at San Diego, California, 14-17 November 1978, was the fi rst of these conferences to be jointly sponsored by the Army, Navy and Ai r Force together with NASA, as well as being the first to give attention to non-aerospace applications of fiber reinforced composites. While the design technology for aerospace applications has reached a state of relative maturity, other areas of application such as mi litary bridging, flywheel energy storage systems, ship and surface vessel components and ground vehicle components are in an early stage of development, and it was an important objective to pinpoint where careful attention to structural design was needed in such applications to achfeve maximum structural performance payoff together with a high level of reliability and attractive economics.
Book Synopsis Sandwich Structures 7: Advancing with Sandwich Structures and Materials by : O.T. Thomsen
Download or read book Sandwich Structures 7: Advancing with Sandwich Structures and Materials written by O.T. Thomsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 1029 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandwich structures represent a special form of a laminated composite material or structural elements, where a relatively thick, lightweight and compliant core material separates thin stiff and strong face sheets. The faces are usually made of laminated polymeric based composite materials, and typically, the core can be a honeycomb type material, a polymeric foam or balsa wood. The faces and the core are joined by adhesive bonding, which ensures the load transfer between the sandwich constituent parts. The result is a special laminate with very high bending stiffness and strength to weight ratios. Sandwich structures are being used successfully for a variety of applications such as spacecraft, aircraft, train and car structures, wind turbine blades, boat/ship superstructures, boat/ship hulls and many others. The overall objective of the 7th International Conference on Sandwich Structures (ICSS-7) is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest research and technology on all aspects of sandwich structures and materials, spanning the entire spectrum of research to applications in all the fields listed above.

Book Synopsis Design and Analysis of Composite Structures by : Christos Kassapoglou
Download or read book Design and Analysis of Composite Structures written by Christos Kassapoglou and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-07-05 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design and Analysis of Composite Structures enables graduate students and engineers to generate meaningful and robust designs of complex composite structures. Combining analysis and design methods for structural components, the book begins with simple topics such as skins and stiffeners and progresses through to entire components of fuselages and wings. Starting with basic mathematical derivation followed by simplifications used in real-world design, Design and Analysis of Composite Structures presents the level of accuracy and range of applicability of each method. Examples taken from actual applications are worked out in detail to show how the concepts are applied, solving the same design problem with different methods based on different drivers (e.g. cost or weight) to show how the final configuration changes as the requirements and approach change. Provides a toolkit of analysis and design methods to most situations encountered in practice, as well as analytical frameworks and the means to solving them for tackling less frequent problems. Presents solutions applicable to optimization schemes without having to run finite element models at each iteration, speeding up the design process and allowing examination of several more alternatives than traditional approaches. Includes guidelines showing how decisions based on manufacturing considerations affect weight and how weight optimization may adversely affect the cost. Accompanied by a website at www.wiley.com/go/kassapoglou hosting lecture slides and solutions to the exercises for instructors.
