Book Synopsis L'esistenza di Dio. Un argomento tomistico by : Adriano Virgili
Download or read book L'esistenza di Dio. Un argomento tomistico written by Adriano Virgili and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book De Malo written by Saint Thomas (Aquinas) and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The De Malo represents some of St. Thomas Aquinas' most mature thinking on goodness, badness, and human agency. Together with the second part of the Summa Theologiae, it is one of his most sustained contributions to moral philosophy and theology. Aquinas examines the full range of questions associated with evil: its origin, its nature, its variety, its relation to good, and its compatibility with the existence of an omnipotent, benevolent God. This edition offers the Leonine Commission's authoritative edition of the Latin text with a new, clear, and readable English translation by Richard Regan with an extensive introduction and notes by Brian Davies.
Download or read book Aquinas on Being written by Anthony Kenny and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2002-09-26 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony Kenny offers a critical examination of a central metaphysical doctrine of Thomas Aquinas, the greatest of the medieval philosophers. Aquinas's account of being is famous and influential: but Kenny argues that it in fact suffers from systematic confusion. Because of the centrality of the doctrine, this has implications for other parts of Aquinas's philosophical system: in particular, Kenny shows that the idea that God is pure being is a hindrance, not a help, to Aquinas's natural theology. Kenny's clear and incisive study, drawing on the scholastic as well as the analytic tradition, dispels the confusion and offers philosophers and theologians a guide through the labyrinth of Aquinas's ontology.
Book Synopsis Aquinas after Frege by : Giovanni Ventimiglia
Download or read book Aquinas after Frege written by Giovanni Ventimiglia and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fresh reading of Aquinas’ metaphysics in the light of insights from the works of Frege. In particular, Ventimiglia argues that Aquinas’ doctrine of being can be better understood through Frege’s distinction between the ‘there is’ sense and the ‘present actuality’ sense of being, as interpreted by Peter Geach and Anthony Kenny. Aquinas’ notion of essence becomes clearer in the light of Frege’s distinction between objects and concepts and his account of concepts as functions. Aquinas’ doctrine of trancendentals is clarified with the help of Frege’s accounts of assertion and negation. Aquinas after Frege provides us with a new Aquinas, which pays attention to his texts and their historical context. Ventimiglia’s development of ‘British Thomism’ furnishes us with a lucid and exciting re-reading of Aquinas’ metaphysics.
Book Synopsis Behind the Door by : Giorgio Bassani
Download or read book Behind the Door written by Giorgio Bassani and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of Bassani's moving novel of childhood friendship and the unexpected loss of innocence The years lived since then have not, in the end, been of any use: I haven't managed to remedy the suffering which has remained there like a hidden wound, secretly bleeding. In the fourth book of the Romanzo di Ferrara cycle, Bassani paints a moving portrait of a 1930s childhood in which even the familiar classroom and playground dramas begin to reflect the sinister forces at work in fascist Italy. This powerful tale of friendship and rivalry in the face of the ever encroaching spectre of adulthood adds yet another intricate thread to Bassani's rich tapestry of his native city, Ferrara. 'Giorgio Bassani is one of the great witnesses of this century, and one of its great artists' Guardian 'Powerful new translations . . . Bassani began as a poet, and McKendrick's redelivery of this taut uncompromising fiction reveals resonance and generosity' Ali Smith

Book Synopsis Death: Beyond Whole-Brain Criteria by : Richard M. Zaner
Download or read book Death: Beyond Whole-Brain Criteria written by Richard M. Zaner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the tone of the report by the President's Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine and Biomedical and Behavioral Re search, one might conclude that the whole-brain-oriented definition of death is now firmly established as an enduring element of public policy. In that report, Defining Death: Medical, Legal and Ethical Issues in the Determination of Death, the President's Commission forwarded a uni form determination of death act, which laid heavy accent on the signifi cance of the brain stem in determining whether an individual is alive or dead: An individual who has sustained either (1) irreversible cessation of circulatory and respiratory functions, or (2) irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain, including the brain stem, is dead. A determination of death must be made in accordance with accepted medical standards ([1], p. 2). The plausibility of these criteria is undermined as soon as one confronts the question of the level of treatment that ought to be provided to human bodies that have permanently lost consciousness but whose brain stems are still functioning.
Book Synopsis Resurrection of the Dead by : Athenagoras
Download or read book Resurrection of the Dead written by Athenagoras and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-12-06 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athenagoras (circa 133 - 190) was a Father of the Church, a Proto-orthodox Christian apologist who lived during the second half of the 2nd century of whom little is known for certain, besides that he was Athenian (though possibly not originally from Athens), a philosopher, and a convert to Christianity. In his writings he styles himself as "Athenagoras, the Athenian, Philosopher, and Christian". There is some evidence that he was a Platonist before his conversion, but this is not certain. His writings bear witness to his erudition and culture, his power as a philosopher and rhetorician, his keen appreciation of the intellectual temper of his age, and his tact and delicacy in dealing with the powerful opponents of his religion. Thus his writings are credited by some later scholars as having had a more significant impact on their intended audience than the now better-known writings of his more polemical and religiously-grounded contemporaries. The treatise on the Resurrection of the Dead, the first complete exposition of the doctrine in Christian literature, was written later than the Apology, to which it may be considered as an appendix.
