Book excerpt: Gripping and tragic, Dalko is the definitive story of Steve “White Lightning” Dalkowski, baseball’s fastest pitcher ever. Dalko explores one man’s unmatched talent on the mound and the forces that kept ultimate greatness always just beyond his reach. For the first time, Dalko: The Untold Story of Baseball’s Fastest Pitcher unites all of the eyewitness accounts from the coaches, analysts, teammates, and professionals who witnessed the game’s fastest pitcher in action. In doing so, it puts readers on the fields and at the plate to hear the buzzing fastball of a pitcher fighting to achieve his major league ambitions. Just three days after his high school graduation in 1957, Steve Dalkowski signed into the Baltimore Orioles system. Poised for greatness, he might have risen to be one of the stars in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Instead, he spent his entire career toiling away in the minor leagues. An inspiration for the character Nuke LaLoosh in the classic baseball film Bull Durham, Dalko’s life and story were as fast and wild as the pitches he threw. The late Orioles manager Earl Weaver, who saw baseball greats Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax pitch, said “Dalko threw harder than all of ‘em.” Cal Ripken Sr., Dalkowski’s catcher for several years, said the same. Bull Durham screenwriter Ron Shelton, who played with Dalkowski in the minor leagues, said “They called him “Dalko” and guys liked to hang with him and women wanted to take care of him and if he walked in a room in those days he was probably drunk.” This force on the field that could break chicken wire backstops and wooden fences with his heat but racked up almost as many walks as strikeouts in his career, spent years of drinking all night and showing up on the field the next day, just in time to show his wild heat again. What the Washington Post called “baseball’s greatest what-If story” is one of a superhuman, once-in-a-generation gift, a near-mythical talent that refused to be tamed. Steve Dalkowski will forever be remembered for his remarkable arm. Said Shelton, “In his sport, he had the equivalent of Michaelangelo’s gift but could never finish a painting.” Dalko is the story of the fastest pitching that baseball has ever seen, an explosive but uncontrolled arm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an award-winning graphic artist and baseball historian comes a strikingly original illustrated history of baseball’s forgotten heroes, including stars of the Negro Leagues, barnstorming teams, semi-pro leagues, foreign leagues, and famous players like Shoeless Joe Jackson, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, and Joe DiMaggio before they achieved notoriety. From a young age, Gary Cieradkowski had a passion for baseball’s unheralded heroes. Inspired by his father and their shared love of the sport, Cieradkowski began creating “outsider” baseball cards, as a way to tell the little-known stories of baseball’s many unsung heroes—alongside some of baseball’s greatest players before they were famous. The League of Outsider Baseball is a tribute to all of those who’ve played the game, known and unknown. Shining a light into the dark corners of baseball history—from Mickey Mantle’s minor league days to Negro League greats like Josh Gibson and Leon Day; to people that most never knew played the game, such as Frank Sinatra, who had his own ball club in 1940s Hollywood; bank robber John Dillinger, who was a promising shortstop and took time out between robberies to attend Cubs games; and even a few US presidents—this book is a rich, visual tribute to America’s pastime. Meticulously researched, beautifully illustrated using a unique, vintage baseball-card-style, and filled with a colorful and rich cast of characters, this book is a prized collector’s item and will be cherished by fans of all ages.

Book excerpt: Chiral molecules are needed for the production of many pharmaceuticals and materials, and catalytic asymmetric synthesis provides a method for the preparation of such chiral products. For the synthesis of complex molecules, such as natural products and biologically active compounds, more than one catalytic reaction may be necessary and tandem catalysis refers to the combination of catalytic reactions into one synthesis. By combing catalysts it enables a more efficient, economical and selective one pot approach for complex molecule synthesis which could not be achieved through single specific catalytic systems. The challenge is finding the right catalyst which is compatible with other catalysts but also tolerates reagents, solvent and intermediates generated during the course of the reaction. Enantioselective Multicatalysed Tandem Reactions provides an overview of recent developments in the area. The first part of the book covers asymmetric tandem reactions catalysed by multiple catalysts from the same discipline (organocatalysts, two metal and multienzyme-catalysed reactions). The second part looks at tandem reactions catalysed by multiple catalysts from different disciplines including reactions catalysed by a combination of metals and organocatalysts, reactions catalysed by a combination of metals and enzymes, and finally reactions catalysed by a combination of organocatalysts and enzymes. The book will appeal to researchers and professionals in academic and industrial laboratories interested in catalysis, biocatalysis and organic synthesis of chiral compounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last 15 years have witnessed significant developments in the efficiency and scope of the application of DKR. These now offer a serious alternative to conventional methods for asymmetric synthesis. Indeed, impressive examples using new enzymes and major progress in the DKR of racemates have taken place over the past few years. The powerful combination of enzymes and metals has also been the subject of spectacular development. In addition, a new type of DKR, involving organocatalysts, has recently appeared. Although asymmetric catalysis has undergone development during the last two decades, the most common industrial process used to obtain enantiomerically pure compounds is still via resolution of racemic mixtures. This is despite the major disadvantage that only a maximum of 50% product yield can be obtained. It is not surprising that DKR, which solves the problem of the limitation in yield, has attracted an increasing amount of interest from both the industrial and the academic perspective. This book provides an up-date on the principle methods employed to obtain dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) by either enzymatic or non-enzymatic methods. It also illustrates the diversity of useful chiral products that can be obtained through this powerful concept. Divided into three sections, the book deals successively with non-enzymatic methods, enzymatic methods, and the use of transition metals and enzymes in tandem.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to cover the very recent developments in asymmetric organocatalysis, focussing on those published since the beginning of 2008. The last decade has witnessed an explosive growth in the field of asymmetric organocatalysis with an impressive amount of new catalysts, novel methodologies, and applications in numerous reaction types, such as nucleophilic substitutions, addition reactions, as well as cycloadditions, oxidations, reductions, kinetic resolutions, and miscellaneous reactions. This very diverse and intensely developing field is too wide to cover in a single review. The timeliness of the book together with the expected impact is excellent, since nowadays asymmetric organocatalysis is arguably the most intensively developed field in organic chemistry. The book is designed to meet the demands of a postgraduate textbook, containing case studies and Q&A sections, as well as a practical book filled with facts and data useful as a working tool for the practitioner. The book is divided into ten sections, dealing successively with nucleophilic additions to electron-deficient C=C double bonds, nucleophilic additions to C=O double bonds, nucleophilic additions to C=N double bonds, nucleophilic additions to unsaturated nitrogen, nucleophilic substitutions at aliphatic carbon, cycloaddition reactions, oxidations, reductions, kinetic resolutions and desymmetrisations, and miscellaneous reactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sodium Dithionite, Rongalite and Thiurea Oxides provides an in depth overview of historical and newly developed fields of application for important sulfur-containing reductants. It begins with an introduction into the structure and general properties of sodium dithionite, sodium hydroxymethanesulfinate (rongalite) and thiourea oxides. Following this there is analysis of their stability in different types of solutions, and reactions with both organic and inorganic compounds. Finally, there is description of the application of the reductants in industry, using examples of the textile, printing and paper industries, as well as in polymerization processes. Despite widespread practical application, the mechanism behind these compounds is not fully understood, due to their unusual structure and complex decomposition within solutions. This comprehensive review presents up-to-date findings to both academics and industrial chemists, aiming to increase knowledge and provide both fundamental and technical data dedicated to these relatively simple chemicals which have wide practical applications.
