Book excerpt: Le contexte d'évolution de l'urbanité dans l'agglomération de Dakar est combiné à l'émergence et/ou à l'affirmation de logiques identitaires. La religion est devenue, par la voie de ces réseaux, un facteur important de la construction territoriale. Cela va de la conquête de portions d'espaces à la création de nouveaux territoires légitimés par le religieux. Les réseaux socio-religieux en l'occurence ceux de la communauté catholique de Dakar ne sont pas seulement inscrits dans l'espace de l'agglomération, mais aussi produits par celui-ci ; ils sont dynamiques. Par leur dynamisme spatio-temporel, ils contribuent à structurer, développer et modifier le territoire de l'agglomération. Les "territoires-réseaux" qu'ils constituent, pourraient ainsi combiner l'ensemble des relations qui se tissent à l'intérieur des différentes structures urbaines. Et parallèlement à la géographie administrative, la géographie chrétienne et spécialement la géographie catholique évolue avec sa propre structuration et répond à ses propres normes d'organisation régies autour de deux modèles : ponctuel et surfacique ; elle fonctionne entre le local et le global. C'est à travers les comportements et les stratégies développés par la communauté pour intégrer le religieux dans l'urbain que se dessinne la territorialité. Pour la plupart, l'adhésion à des réseaux associatifs ou communautaires n'est pas systématique, l'appartenance à l'entité géographique ou à la structure les hébergeant (l'entreprise, l'établissement,...) est souvent nécessaire. Une des règles principales du fonctionnement des réseaux socio-religieux est qu'ils font ressortir deux niveaux d'occurences auxquels il faut s'interésser : le niveau individuel du fidèle appartenant ou non à l'organisation et le niveau collectif de l'organisation réseautique elle-même

In this important book, author Rachel Petrocelli introduces the concept of transactional culture, a set of norms and practices forged by Dakar's residents to navigate life under colonial rule. A central element of this culture was transience, a defining feature permeating various facets of life in Dakar, from commerce and employment to housing and interactions with the state. The book uncovers a central dynamic: economic relationships in Dakar were continually molded by the ebb and flow of diverse individuals, each pursuing their own objectives, despite relentless efforts of the French state to exert control. Both Europeans and Africans embraced adaptability in Dakar over fixed residence, while immigrant communities implanted themselves and became integral to the city's transactional culture. In a compelling narrative based on court records and other primary sources, author Rachel Petrocelli shows that as the French colonial state sought to shape and control Dakar, it enacted policies to intentionally limit city dwellers' financial resources. Practices like pawning possessions and taking out credit emerged as financial strategies as a result, integrating Dakarois of every background. But as Carl H. Nightingale shows us in this magisterial history, segregation is everywhere, deforming cities and societies worldwide. Starting with segregation’s ancient roots, and what the archaeological evidence reveals about humanity’s long-standing use of urban divisions to reinforce political and economic inequality, Nightingale then moves to the world of European colonialism. It was there, he shows, segregation based on color—and eventually on race—took hold; the British East India Company, for example, split Calcutta into “White Town” and “Black Town.” As we follow Nightingale’s story around the globe, we see that division replicated from Hong Kong to Nairobi, Baltimore to San Francisco, and more. The turn of the twentieth century saw the most aggressive segregation movements yet, as white communities almost everywhere set to rearranging whole cities along racial lines.
