Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dairy Fortunes Within 25 years cows that will make over 500 pounds of butter each, can be produced in the United States. Why keep cows when will produce more milk, more cream and more butter? Most dairymen are easily satisfied and do not expect much. Keep no cow that, will not produce $100 a year. A few years ago I wrote and published a book, and when I talked about selling copies of it, my friends said I was a candidate for a lunatic asylum, but the publishers sold over copies, and they expect to exceed the mark. I expect to live to the time when cows that will make 600 pounds of butter will be numbered by hundreds of thousands. Every dairyman must read and study what he reads, and must learn that successful dairying depends principally upon his tact and earnest effort. Book learning does not make the successful man. The greatest book ever written about how to get along in the world, was written by a man who always ate the crust of poverty - he could tell other people how to suc ceed, but was a helpless failure himself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from De Laval Dairy Hand Book The start was made with 20 western heifers bred to freshen the first fall. The heifers calved all right and yielded some milk. But what a surprise they did bring. The weekly profits by actual figures amounted to only 11 cents. Not much outlook for dairy success, especially when all farm and living expenses must be secured from the farm itself. The way things were going caused much anxiety in the Smith home. The family talked matters over and decided they had the wrong kind of cows. Gonse quently, the next spring every cow was sold; such cows were worse than none. Better have one good cow that will give a large yield of milk than to care for a half-dozen to yield no more. A cow and a calf were now purchased. Others were picked up in the neighborhood as opportunity offered. During the next two years this plan was followed with success. Some proved to be very good cows; others were poor. But each cow had to prove her worth from her milk record and if that record was below the standard she was sold to the butcher. The Smiths were now getting their bearings; they saw there was money in the right kind of cows. Their experience in buying showed the value and the merit in good blood. So they aspired to pure-bred stock. Shortly two cows were purchased and the price was $40 each. One gave birth to twin bull calves both of which were sold for $50 apiece. Grade bull calves were worth next to nothing. The Smiths now bought 14 regis tered cows. Each was a high producer and yielded a good profit. Light was appearing at last. As the registered stock increased the grade cows were sold, only the best being retained. At the present time the herd con sists of 100 head, young and old, and all pure-bred and registered. I desire in the preface to remind the public of the great and unique services rendered to British Dairy Farming by the late H. M. Jenkins, many years the able and indefatigable Secretary of the Royal Agricultural Society, whose lucid expositions of the dairy practices of several Continental countries have added so much to our knowledge of what other people are doing, and Whose life-work ended far too early in the grave. Book excerpt: A new edition of a “dazzlingly seductive” fever dream written in “brilliant poetic vernacular” (Bookforum) by a beloved poet and cultural critic, now with an introduction by Rachel Kushner. For five years, concert pianist Theo Mangrove has been living at his family’s home in East Kill, New York, recovering from a nervous breakdown that derailed his career, and attempting to relieve his relentless polysexual appetite in the company of male hustlers, random strangers, music students, his aunt, and occasionally his wife. As he prepares for a comeback recital in Aigues-Mortes, a walled medieval town in southern France, he becomes obsessed with the idea that the Italian circus star Moira Orfei must join him there to perform alongside him. Extravagantly (and tragicomically) describing his hallucinatory plans in a series of twenty-five notebooks, he assembles an incantatory meditation on performance, failure, fame, decay, and delusion. "If Debussy and Robert Walser had collaborated on an opera, it would sound like this. --John Ashbery

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The irresistible, candid diaries of Richard Burton, published in their entirety “Just great fun, and written out of an engaging, often comical bewilderment: How did a poor Welshman become not only a star, but a player on the world stage that was Elizabeth Taylor’s fame?”—Hilton Als, NewYorker.com “Of real interest is that Burton was almost as good a writer as an actor, read as many as three books a day, haunted bookstores in every city he set foot in, bought countless books on every conceivable subject and evaluated them rather shrewdly. . . . Apt writing abounds.”—John Simon, New York Times Book Review Irresistibly magnetic on stage, mesmerizing in movies, seven times an Academy Award nominee, Richard Burton rose from humble beginnings in Wales to become Hollywood's most highly paid actor and one of England's most admired Shakespearean performers. His epic romance with Elizabeth Taylor, his legendary drinking and story-telling, his dazzling purchases (enormous diamonds, a jet, homes on several continents), and his enormous talent kept him constantly in the public eye. Yet the man behind the celebrity façade carried a surprising burden of insecurity and struggled with the peculiar challenges of a life lived largely in the spotlight. This volume publishes Burton's extensive personal diaries in their entirety for the first time. His writings encompass many years—from 1939, when he was still a teenager, to 1983, the year before his death—and they reveal him in his most private moments, pondering his triumphs and demons, his loves and his heartbreaks. The diary entries appear in their original sequence, with annotations to clarify people, places, books, and events Burton mentions. From these hand-written pages emerges a multi-dimensional man, no mere flashy celebrity. While Burton touched shoulders with shining lights—among them Olivia de Havilland, John Gielgud, Claire Bloom, Laurence Olivier, John Huston, Dylan Thomas, and Edward Albee—he also played the real-life roles of supportive family man, father, husband, and highly intelligent observer. His diaries offer a rare and fresh perspective on his own life and career, and on the glamorous decades of the mid-twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An important and groundbreaking contribution to the struggle for the welfare of animals." -- Yuval Harari, New York Times best-selling author of Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind The book offers an absorbing look at why and how humans can so wholeheartedly devote ourselves to certain animals and then allow others to suffer needlessly, especially those slaughtered for our consumption. Social psychologist Melanie Joy explores the many ways we numb ourselves and disconnect from our natural empathy for farmed animals. She coins the term "carnism" to describe the belief system that has conditioned us to eat certain animals and not others. In Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows, Joy investigates factory farming, exposing how cruelly the animals are treated, the hazards that meatpacking workers face, and the environmental impact of raising 10 billion animals for food each year. Controversial and challenging, this book will change the way you think about food forever. "An absorbing examination of why humans feel affection and compassion for certain animals but are callous to the suffering of others." - Publishers Weekly "I think Gandhi would have loved Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows,. For this is a book that can change the way you think and change the way you live. It will lead you from denial to awareness, from passivity to action, and from resignation to hope." - John Robbins, author of Diet for a New America and The Food Revolution
