Book Synopsis The Assassins Gallery by : David L. Robbins
Download or read book The Assassins Gallery written by David L. Robbins and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2006-07-25 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An absolutely sensational historical thriller—with an ending so shocking that I literally jumped up out of my chair!”—Max Byrd, author of Grant New Year’s Eve, 1945. The assassin steps out of the Atlantic Ocean in the middle of a raging nor’easter. Cool and efficient, she’s a weapon of war superbly trained in the ancient arts of subterfuge and murder. And even though she’s outnumbered, she’s got one major advantage: No one knows she’s coming. Professor Mikhal Lammeck’ s specialty is the history and weaponry of assassins. But even Lammeck is caught off guard when the Secret Service urgently requests his help: A gruesome double murder and suicide in Massachusetts has set off alarm bells. It’s only a hunch, but all too soon Lammeck suspects the unthinkable. In the waning days of the war, someone wants one last shot to alter history. An assassin is headed to Washington, D.C., to kill the most important soldier of them all: the U.S. commander in chief. As Lammeck and a killer at the top of her profession circle the streets of the capital in the hunt for FDR, one of them will attempt to kill the world’s most powerful man; the other, to save him. And between them, for an instant, history will hang in the balance. . . . Praise for The Assassins Gallery “Provide[s] thriller readers with one of their best reads of the year. . . . The powerful climax deserves the term 'heart-stopping.'”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Ingenious . . . A solid, satisfying treat for the armchair historian.”—Kirkus Reviews “An exciting thriller that rings so true it's difficult to tell where fact ends and fiction begins. Robbins is a master—at the top of his game with this one.”—Steve Berry, New York Times bestselling author of The Templar Legacy “If you read one book this year, make it The Assassins Gallery. Mesmerizing plotting, characters you'll never forget, and a wealth of invaluable historical seasoning that make you wonder ... did it actually happen this way? Only one word will do to describe this novel: masterpiece.”—Brian Haig, bestselling author of Man in the Middle “Nobody is better than David L. Robbins at making yesterday feel like today and fiction feel like fact. This is his most audacious book yet and probably his best.”—Lee Child, New York Times bestselling author of One Shot

We also discover how new infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 emerge—and how we wage war against them. Humanity has struck back at the microbes: antibiotics and new vaccines have saved millions of lives. But the battle with these relentless, silent enemies is far from won. We face increasing threats from new and unavoidable pandemics, antibiotic resistance, and even potential extraterrestrial microbes. Duel Without End is a fascinating journey through the long history of infection, from the dawn of life to humanity’s future exploration of deep space.

Download or read book Relax, You're Already Home written by Raymond Barnett and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-12-16 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simple ways to a fuller and more vibrant existence, drawn from the Taoist tradition and shaped to fit our modern lives. Relax, You’re Already Home explores how we can enrich our lives in modern America by incorporating simple habits discovered in the Taoist tradition. We don't have to dramatically reshape our lives or perform time-consuming rituals like meditation, kung fu, or breathing practices. Dr. Raymond Barnett instead shows how we can focus on basic daily Taoist habits through activities like going to the park, gardening, or enjoying a cup of tea. He even helps us create our own rituals around holidays, saints, historical figures or events, or anything else that resonates with us. This warm and accessible book is ideal for anyone whose life seems too fast and complicated, as well as for those who are interested in Eastern religions but don’t have the time or inclination to take up esoteric practices. Complete with “interactives” that suggest exercises and probing questions, Relax, You're Already Home is a perfect primer for Taoism and a philosophy in its own right.

Book Synopsis Forged in Genocide by : William Blakemore Lyon
Download or read book Forged in Genocide written by William Blakemore Lyon and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forged in Genocide traces the early history of colonial capitalism in Namibia with a central focus on migrants who came to be key to the economy during and as a result of the German genocide of the Herero and Nama (1904-1908). It posits that Namibia, far from being a colonial backwater of the early 20th century, became highly integrated into the labor flows and economies of West and Southern Africa, and even for a time was one of the most sought-after regions for African migrants because of relatively high wages and numerous opportunities resulting from the war’s demographic devastation paired with an economic frenzy following the discovery of diamonds. In highlighting the life stories of migrants in Namibia from regions as diverse as the Kru coast of Liberia, the Eastern Cape of South Africa, and the Ovambo polities of Northern Namibia, this work integrates micro-history into larger African continental trends. Building off of written sources from migrants themselves and utilising the Namibian Worker Database constructed for this project, this book explores the lives of workers in early colonial Namibia in a way that has hereto not been attempted.

Book Synopsis Diverse Voices in Photographic Albums by : Mary Trent
Download or read book Diverse Voices in Photographic Albums written by Mary Trent and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a variety of case studies by global scholars from diverse academic fields, this book explores photographic-album practices of historically marginalized figures from a range of time periods, geographic locations, and socio-cultural contexts. Their albums' stories span various racial, ethnic, gender and sexual identities; nationalities; religions; and dis/abilities. The vernacular albums featured in this volume present narratives that move beyond those reflected in our existing histories. Essays examine the visual, material, and aural strategies that album-makers have used to assert control over the presentation of their histories and identities, and to direct what those narratives have to say, a point of special relevance as these albums move out of private domestic space and into public archives, institutions, and digital formats. This book does not consider photographic albums and scrapbooks as separate genres, but as a continuum of modern creative practices of photographic and mass-print collage aimed at self-expression and narrative-building that co-evolved and were readily accessible. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, history of photography, visual culture, material culture, media studies, and cultural studies.
