Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daddy, why do they call us Dönmeh? is a collection of interviews through which the author was able to shine a light on the famous messianic movement of Sabbatai Sevi from the 17th century and which continues to survive in its multiple identities. Even if today most of the old community has disappeared, the remaining few members of this society keep fighting to preserve their traditions by telling stories about their families as well as by laying bare both their fears and hopes for the future of the Salonican. Suzan Nana Tarablus was born in Istanbul. She graduated from the Arnavutköy American College for Girls and studied American Language and Literature at Istanbul University. During the years 1995-1997, she was the first professional editor-in-chief of Şalom Newspaper. Her research and travel articles have been published in Şalom Magazine where she has also been working as the editor-in-chief since 2016. She is the author of three other books, Bir Sabah Galata’da Uyandım (One Morning I Woke Up at Galata), Çek Kayıkçı Balat’a (Boatman row to Balat!), and Kuşaktan kuşağa Kuzguncuk yolculuğum (My Kuzguncuk journey through generations) all published by Varlık Yayıncılık. She is a member of the Press Council since 2020 and the mother of two sons, Eyal and Eytan.

Book excerpt: Baseball Hall of Famer Norman Thomas "Turkey" Stearnes (1901-1979) batted more than .400 three times, led the Negro Leagues in home runs seven times and holds the all-time Negro Leagues record for career home runs. Despite his legendary achievements on the field, Stearnes worked off-seasons in Detroit's auto plants, including one owned by Walter Briggs, who also owned the Detroit Tigers--a team Stearnes couldn't play for because he was black. Written by his eldest daughter, this first biography of "Turkey" Stearnes intimately recounts his life and career and gives overdue recognition to one of the greatest all-around players in the history of baseball.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For about ten years I have been told to write my stories in a book form. I never did it until now because I couldn't think of a title that was worthy. My son, David and I were talking one beautiful Halloween day at our church. As we discussed his recent separation from his wife, we also discussed my plans to build a new church auditorium. I told him the one I wanted was probably going to cost about $900,000.00 and I didn't want to borrow money. I knew that God had provided for our first building and I knew He could do it again. I just couldn't see any way for that to happen. for such a large amount. David said, "Momma if you will write your stories it will sell." That day after we left the church I came directly to the office and started to type and the title "My story for HIS glory" is what I typed first. I didn't need to stress over the title anymore, that was it. Some secrets bring much greater destruction into our lives than if they were revealed. Revealing secret sin is painful, but God uses our honesty to bring a whole new dimension of freedom into our life. Satan will never be able to use that secret sin to hold us in bondage any more. Many others have allowed fear and shame to hold them back from taking the path that I have taken. Revealing my secret took courage. But God's incredible rewards await those who are willing to take the hard steps to live in open honesty. I praise God that He brought me through all the pain and destruction that Satan was putting on me, because now I live in freedom.

Book excerpt: The final book by the noted novelist, short story writer, and teacher John L'Heureux: the story of an affable stranger whose appeals for money gradually upend the lives of an academic's family After a decades-long career as a critically acclaimed writer (including several novels with Viking and Penguin in the late '80s and early '90s) John L'Heureux had a late flowering in his career. In the year before his death in April of 2019, The New Yorker published three of his stories, and a collection of his short stories will be published by A Public Space in December 2019. His final novel, The Beggar's Pawn, is the story of a family whose chance meeting with a stranger while dog walking slowly becomes an ominous invasion of their domestic lives. David and Maggie Holliss are an ordinary married couple about to ease into a comfortable, well-earned retirement while tending to three middle-aged children with whom they share an edgy relationship of love and resentment. Reginald Parker enters their lives when he saves their dog from being run over by a truck, and when asked how they can possibly thank him, he replies with a request for the loan of two hundred dollars. They lend it to him, gladly, and thus begins what will become for them and their family a nightmare that moves from comic resignation to stark tragedy. In The Beggar's Pawn, John L'Heureux explores the strains of marriage, the nature of trust, the limits of love, and the inevitability of fate.
