Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fascinating patient stories and dynamic exercises help you connect to healing emotions, ease anxiety and depression, and discover your authentic self. Sara suffered a debilitating fear of asserting herself. Spencer experienced crippling social anxiety. Bonnie was shut down, disconnected from her feelings. These patients all came to psychotherapist Hilary Jacobs Hendel seeking treatment for depression, but in fact none of them were chemically depressed. Rather, Jacobs Hendel found that they’d all experienced traumas in their youth that caused them to put up emotional defenses that masqueraded as symptoms of depression. Jacobs Hendel led these patients and others toward lives newly capable of joy and fulfillment through an empathic and effective therapeutic approach that draws on the latest science about the healing power of our emotions. Whereas conventional therapy encourages patients to talk through past events that may trigger anxiety and depression, accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP), the method practiced by Jacobs Hendel and pioneered by Diana Fosha, PhD, teaches us to identify the defenses and inhibitory emotions (shame, guilt, and anxiety) that block core emotions (anger, sadness, fear, disgust, joy, excitement, and sexual excitement). Fully experiencing core emotions allows us to enter an openhearted state where we are calm, curious, connected, compassionate, confident, courageous, and clear. In It’s Not Always Depression, Jacobs Hendel shares a unique and pragmatic tool called the Change Triangle—a guide to carry you from a place of disconnection back to your true self. In these pages, she teaches lay readers and helping professionals alike • why all emotions—even the most painful—have value. • how to identify emotions and the defenses we put up against them. • how to get to the root of anxiety—the most common mental illness of our time. • how to have compassion for the child you were and the adult you are. Jacobs Hendel provides navigational tools, body and thought exercises, candid personal anecdotes, and profound insights gleaned from her patients’ remarkable breakthroughs. She shows us how to work the Change Triangle in our everyday lives and chart a deeply personal, powerful, and hopeful course to psychological well-being and emotional engagement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A documentary filmmaker and daughter of the late, great New York Times columnist David Carr celebrates and wrestles with her father’s legacy in a raw, redemptive memoir.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “A breathtaking read . . . a testimony equal parts love and candor. David would have had it no other way.”—Ta-Nehisi Coates, bestselling author of Between the World and Me NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY GLAMOUR AND MARIE CLAIRE Dad: What will set you apart is not talent but will and a certain kind of humility. A willingness to let the world show you things that you play back as you grow as an artist. Talent is cheap. Me: OK I will ponder these things. I am a Carr. Dad: That should matter quite a bit, actually not the name but the guts of what that name means. A celebrated journalist, bestselling author (The Night of the Gun), and recovering addict, David Carr was in the prime of his career when he suffered a fatal collapse in the newsroom of The New York Times in 2015. Shattered by his death, his daughter Erin Lee Carr, at age twenty-seven an up-and-coming documentary filmmaker, began combing through the entirety of their shared correspondence—1,936 items in total—in search of comfort and support. What started as an exercise in grief quickly grew into an active investigation: Did her father’s writings contain the answers to the question of how to move forward in life and work without her biggest champion by her side? How could she fill the space left behind by a man who had come to embody journalistic integrity, rigor, and hard reporting, whose mentorship meant everything not just to her but to the many who served alongside him? All That You Leave Behind is a poignant coming-of-age story that offers a raw and honest glimpse into the multilayered relationship between a daughter and a father. Through this lens, Erin comes to understand her own workplace missteps, existential crises, and relationship fails. While daughter and father bond over their mutual addictions and challenges with sobriety, it is their powerful sense of work and family that comes to ultimately define them. This unique combination of Erin Lee Carr’s earnest prose and her father’s meaningful words offers a compelling read that shows us what it means to be vulnerable and lost, supported and found. It is a window into love, with all of its fierceness and frustrations. “Thank you, Erin, for this beautiful book. Now I am going to steal all of your father’s remarkable advice and tell my kids I thought of it.”—Judd Apatow

Learn how to use emotional safety as a foundation from which you parent—and make a cultural impact that could change the world! In Safe House, Dr. Straub draws from his extensive research and personal experience to help you: - Foster healthy identity and social development in children of any age - Win the war without getting overwhelmed in the daily battles - Discipline in a way that builds relationship - Understand how the culture is affecting your child and what you can do about it - Cultivate responsible, self-regulating behavior in your kids - Establish an unshakeable sense of faith, morality, and values in your home - Feel more confident and peaceful as a parent - Find a greater perspective on parenting than what you might see on a daily basis Also includes a Safe House Parenting Assessment.

Book excerpt: The Miracle in a Daddy's Hug has a two-fold meaning: It's about the child who is a miracle full of miracles, and it's about the miracle-producing power of a daddy wrapping his arms, words, and heart around his child. In a world where so many boys and girls grow up deprived of their father's love, we see the repercussions of this depravation in the individual lives of these children and in society as a whole. The Miracle in a Daddy's Hug has a two-fold meaning: It's about the child who is a miracle full of miracles, and it's about the miracle-producing power of a daddy wrapping his arms, words, and heart around his child. This easy to read and understand book shares seven components of the miracle in a daddy's hug: First it examines the miracle of the child and the dad. Then, it looks at the value of touch, words, time, love, and faith. This book helps parents understand their children, it provides vision and strategies for both moms and dads, and it builds confidence in every dad that he can raise miracles called children.

Book excerpt: Gorgeous, tempting, and entirely out of my league. I just met the man of my dreams, and rode him like a freaking backpack …and God do I wish that was a euphemism. Ever wonder what exactly is in a recipe for disaster? Cause, I’ve got it. All you need is one candy corn loving scaredy-cat, i.e. me. Add thirty of my closest frenemies, throw in a haunted corn maze and a murderous clown, and then sprinkle the whole thing with a dash of embarrassment just to keep things interesting. Get the mix just right and you’ll fall in love… Yeah, or you’ll ride the man of your dreams like a backpack. Literally. I literally rode my dream guy—my tempting, illegally hot, fantasy man—backpack style out of that stupid corn maze. I’m just trying to survive my senior year of college. My only rule: take the path of least resistance. Which was going great until I fell for the hottest man on campus. The one all the girls want. Coach Prescott. Crap. I crave him more than candy corn. Which is a lot. With dark eyes, hard muscles, and a dominant streak a mile wide. There was no resisting him. He wants to know my naughtiest fantasies. That’s easy. I want to be his good girl. His naughty girl. I want him to be my daddy. Sometimes, the dirtiest trick turns into the sweetest treat. Right? Note: Daddy’s Treat is a full-length daddy dom insta-love romance with a guaranteed happily ever after.

Book excerpt: Then it hit me. These kids probably haven't been hugged in awhile if at all. And if they have been hugged lately, it was probably by their mother, not their father. After all, a father wouldn't be seen hugging his child. A father is too proud to hug his child. That's for the mother to do, not the father. It's the father's job to make the money and pay the bills. The mother's job is to raise the children and show them affection. Another difference between a father and a daddy. A daddy has no problem hugging his child. A father does. Author and humorist Brad Carver argues that we do not have enough daddies in the world today-and that we need them now more than ever. With his insightful and humorous look at the world of fatherhood, Carver compels you to take a closer look at your own parenting skills. If you're expecting a new bundle of joy or already have three, How to Be A Daddy, Not A Father shows you how to be the "superdaddy" that your child needs!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roy Spence was raised in a family of huggers. When his dad—Big Roy, the biggest hugger of them all—passed away at the age of ninety-five, Roy Jr. started the healing process and discovered a more profound purpose behind the power of hugs. Roy inherited his dad’s way of greeting both friends and strangers alike with a hug. In his journey from small-town Texas boy to CEO of a nationally acclaimed advertising agency, he hugged heads of state and CEOs, waitresses and receptionists, the famous and the salt of the earth. And he used hugs to mend fences, to get over it and get on with it, and to spread a little good in the world. In the 10 Essential Hugs of Life, Roy shares the inspiring lessons he has learned from practicing what his dad taught him—anyone worth meeting is worth hugging—with the hope that others will take up the call to put a little more joy in the lives of those we touch, including our own. We simply need to hug ourselves first, hug our faith and our flags, our friends and family, our fears and failures, our firsts, our futures, and our finals. When we embrace all of the people and events that make us who we are, we discover deep wells of love. With warm Texas charm and stirring artwork, The 10 Essential Hugs of Life reveals a path to healing, to goodness, to a future full of love and hope.

The story opens in the spring of 2010 and moves to events from the past in chapter one. The fall of 2009, David woke one morning and shared with his wife Lori about a dream. The dream was about a terrible storm coming. The Perfect Storm brings two manuscripts together, The Last Hug was a six page document recounting of overcoming and loss which would later become Chapter One and initially was shared as a message for a Sunday morning church service in November of 2009. Four months after the message was shared and the event of the dream the author had a near fatal accident by falling head first from a ladder. Trying to find purpose from surviving, what followed next were twelve chapters written over the course of nine years since. The book is about his family struggles, heartache, and tragedies that have tested himself and the family’s faith on this Earth. The message of the author is of inspiration and hope to all. Chapter Two thru Five take place during the early 1960’s to 1980. From a dysfunctional family trying to survive from separation, divorce, adoption, the loss of a second father, multiple homes, schools, and dreaming of goals while working the fields as a teenager. The dream of the terrible storm in the fall of 2009 is documented in Chapter Four. Chapter six and seven are devoted as memories to his siblings Matt and Janice, the tragedy’s rock the family. He was moved to forgiveness and prayed with his minister when he lost his second sibling in 2005. Life needed to move forward from 1977 tragedy’s so that the grief, anger, and hurt would not continue to smother him for the rest of his life. Chapter Eight, the author describes four incidents that he had been called to bear Witness, three of which involved fatalities. Chapter Nine and Ten are titled “Heads and…..Hearts”. He shares with the reader experiences with dealing with his own family’s heart issues and traumatic brain injuries. Chapter Eleven is about the author’s son Andy who wore number 15 as a high school football player. Chapter Twelve is the only part of the book not about the author’s family. Nathan Stiles, Spring Hill, Kansas student/athlete died during a high school game while the author was an assistant coach on the opposite sideline. From this tragedy the author experienced the birth of The Nathan Project. The author’s accident is described in the final chapter. David discovers his purpose in life, to share a gift to others through God and help others.
