It's filled with stories of what it's been like as a dad and a son, from a child's first day of kindergarten to the awkward sex talk, right up to the day the always practical dad tries to pay for college with bonus miles. While bookstores are filled with tales of mothers, their children, and families, there are so few from the dad's side. Now, as a public service, I'm doing my part to right this wrong.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller. “There’s an old-fashioned, hard-hat appeal to Mighty Dads, a book made for dramatic read-alouds with sound effects.” —USA Today Mighty dads, strong and tall, help their children, young and small. They keep them safe and bolted tight and show them how to build things right. Inventively told through James Dean’s colorful construction vehicle characters, Mighty Dads is an adoring dedication to hardworking fathers and the subtle ways they teach their boys and girls to follow in their tracks. The Dump Trucks learn to get dirty. Crane keeps his little one safe from harm. The busy Cement Mixer gives his daughter a hug. The Forklift cheers his son on. A surprising and touching view of a father’s love for his children, Mighty Dads is the perfect way to say: I’m proud of you! “Like the best 21st-century human dads, the vehicles don’t just show their kids the ropes—they also offer plenty of TLC . . . A book worthy of any young armchair foreman.” —Publishers Weekly “Just the ticket for vehicle-obsessed youngsters who can’t get enough of construction play.” —School Library Journal “This makes for a perfect choice for story hours—the vivid verbs demand to be chanted and dramatized.” —Booklist

Drawing on research from neuroscientists, animal behaviorists, geneticists, and developmental psychologists, among others, Raeburn takes us through the various stages of fatherhood, revealing the profound physiological connections between children and fathers, from conception through adolescence and into adulthood--and the importance of the relationship between mothers and fathers. In the process, he challenges the legacy of Freud and mainstream views of parental attachment, and also explains how we can become better parents ourselves."--www.Amazon.com.

Douma makes the case that history should be recognized as a subject intimately related to individual experience and positions its practice as an inherently creative endeavor. Douma describes the nature of creativity in historical thought, illustrates his points with case studies and examples. He asserts history’s position as a collective and community-building exercise and argues for the importance of metaphor and other creative tools in communicating about history with people who may view the past in fundamentally different ways. A practical guide and an inspiring affirmation of the personal and communal value of history, Creative Historical Thinking has much to offer to both current and aspiring historians.

Book excerpt: As seen on The Today Show A page-turning memoir from a former opioid addict in an opioid addicted community—and an up-close look at America's new health crisis. Behind closed doors, millions of people abuse opioids. Nicholas Bush was one of them. In this beautifully raw and refreshingly honest memoir, Nicholas Bush boldly allows readers into his addiction-ravaged community. We see how heroin nearly claimed his life on multiple occasions, how it stole the lives of his young siblings and friends, and how it continues to wage a deadly toll on American neighborhoods—claiming thousands of lives and decreasing the average lifespan. But we also see that there is a way off of the devastating rollercoaster of opioid addiction, even for the most afflicted. Nicholas fights for recovery, claws his way out of a criminal livelihood, and finds his footing with faith and family, providing Americans with the inspirational story that is deeply needed today.

Book excerpt: Working Class Dad is the type of book I wish I had when I first became a father twenty years ago. It is truly a manual for fatherhood. There is a mindset presented that allows a father to give his child the freedom to not be held back by a standard of thinking their main objective is to create pride in the heart of his or her father. I've spoken with countless broken people who only ever wanted to make their father proud. My aim is to show fathers that this is the wrong target to place in the sights of a child. The true measure of a father isn't how a situation defines him, but in how he defines the situation. I present a perspective that can apply for any father, whether in service to our military, whether going through divorce, whether lost or found, whether just starting out, or whether closing down shop. I truly kept all situations in perspective as I penned from my heart. Book excerpt -- Last year over the summer I found myself emerged in business travel and it brought me near some unbelievable destinations. I have a personal rule to not just stay in the room on travel, but I believe you should always go explore if you have the time. So, over that spectacular month I experienced the sunrise over the prolific mountain range of the Swiss Alps while I was cruising on the Autobahn, the sun setting in the living panoramic painting of the Yosemite Valley, looked up from underneath the Giant Sequoias in the Valley of the Giants, I walked the streets of Strasbourg in all of its full spring beauty and vibrant colors, and felt the mist and power from the millions of gallons of water churning over the edge of Niagara Falls. While taking in all these marvelous sights and experiences, I thought to myself these must be moments of sheer inspiration. But were they? Yes, I left in complete awe and felt something I couldn't quite put in the adequacy of words. But I didn't invent anything that impacts the experience of humanity or discover any new cures for detrimental health conditions common to humanity upon my return. Maybe that only happens in movies. Finding the true definition amongst scholars and psychologists of inspiration is a little more complicated that it first appears on the surface. There are many good studies done on the topic, but it seems safe to say from the life experience of most of us, inspiration comes from an experience, a thing, or a person. Inspiration at the heart involves an action that propelled us to an action. And fundamentally in reference to what we consider marginally great. It is not hard to find in most organizations today, people teaching about leadership and trying to call out the "greatness" in their employees, students, or religious organizations. With the intrinsic questions revolving around better performance, labeled in "greatness". The way I am defining greatness is to bring out the best in an individual for the greater cause of the group or organization. Solidarity and understanding of greatness are defined by the individual and only sought once there has been a realization of value and gain that....The book defines a pragmatic approach with passion and balance to be the father you never knew you could be, no matter your situation. You'll find insights not only from my own personally relatable experiences but also perspectives from culturally relevant topics and recognizable individuals that create new and genuine consideration for the responsibilities we have as working fathers. All of the hard-earned content proposed serves to build a structure and mindset for the implementation of my greatest secret for success as a father; which is revealed in the final chapters of the book. I have discovered and implemented a way to connect with your children to produce the long-lasting relationships that create unbreakable bonds. One secret that is so treasured, I specially requested permission from my five children to share. And with their obvious approval, I present Working Class Dad.

Book excerpt: This is a true story of six generations of family incest to be read by every family member, psychologist, medical professional, researcher, educator, policy maker, law maker, legal professional, and every talk show host. I am the Great Granddaughter, Great Niece, Niece, Daughter, Sister, Cousin, Mother, Grandmother, Friend, and Neighbor of an accused Child Molester. And my family is not the only family. It is no longer a family secret; it is an epidemic and this war against our children must stop now. It is my theory that incest is an illness passed on from generation to generation the same as other addictions/afflictions which take over the victim's feelings and drives them to conduct these acts which they have no control over. Until we address this issue as a disease instead of a crime our jails and communities will continue to be overloaded with these outcasts; our loved ones! We must build an ARCH; a safe place where families may Acknowledge their illness, accept Responsibility, Confront the illness and begin the Healing to STOP INCEST. We can't change history but it is up to us to change the future! We must provide rights to the sexually challenged by providing awareness, education, resources and treatment to end this story. Six generation later, I refuse to remain silent and allow this to continue. We must break the silence, demand change, and take steps to cure this legally silenced unspeakable epidemic.
