Book Synopsis The Rise and Decline of Communist Czechoslovakia ́s Railway Sector by : Tomáš Nigrin
Download or read book The Rise and Decline of Communist Czechoslovakia ́s Railway Sector written by Tomáš Nigrin and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once the pride of interwar Czechoslovakia, and key during the forced industrialization of the Stalinist period, during the 1970s and 1980s the Czechoslovak railway sector showed the symptoms of the political tiredness and economic exhaustion of the Soviet Bloc. This book examines the failure of central economic planning through the lens of this national transport system. Based on the presentation of its history and on the detailed scrutiny of the actors, institutions, internal mechanisms, and conditions of the railway sector, the analysis reveals the identities of the real stakeholders in the state administration. This case shows how the country was governed by Communist Party institutions and government ministries, and how developments in the transportation sector—like in every sector—reflected their priorities. Numerous tables with selected statistics underscore the economic analysis and black and white photos offer a glimpse on the technical base of the railway sector. The book is filled with enlightening comparisons of the Czechoslovak transportation industry with its counterparts in the whole Eastern Bloc. Integration into the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (Comecon) of the Bloc could have been an asset, yet the records have more to say about conflicts than cooperation.

Book excerpt: For about eight months in 1968 Czechoslovakia underwent rapid and radical changes that were unparalleled in the history of communist reform; in the eight months that followed, those changes were dramatically reversed. H. Gordon Skilling provides a comprehensive analysis of the events of 1968, assessing their significance both for Czechoslovakia and for communism generally. The author's account is based on all available written sources, including unpublished Communist Party documents and interviews conducted in Czechoslovakia in 1967, 1968, and 1969. He examines the historical background, the main reforms and political forces of 1968, international reactions, the Soviet intervention, and the experiment's collapse, concluding with his reasons for regarding the events of the Prague spring as a movement of revolutionary proportions. Book Synopsis A History of Czechoslovakia Since 1945 by : Hans Renner
Download or read book A History of Czechoslovakia Since 1945 written by Hans Renner and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, A History of Czechoslovakia Since 1945 is a comprehensive account of Czechoslovakia under Communist rule, tracing events from 1945 to 1990. The author focuses on the last twenty years in particular, when the Prague Spring offered a brief period of liberalization, but was followed by harder times, with the hope of change fading, and society becoming paralyzed. Dr. Renner describes vividly the country’s fortunes under the Soviet rule of Stalin and Brezhnev, and how it pioneered the policy of glasnost during the Prague Spring of 1968. The book concludes with a special look at the influence of Gorbachev’s glasnost on the regime of Czechoslovakia. Dr. Renner combines a chronological overview with a passionate yet scholarly discussion of underlying political, economic, and cultural issues and developments, making this book invaluable as an authoritative and lucid account of Czechoslovak history, as well as an explanation of the role this country and in events played in the shaping of modern Europe.

Book Synopsis Soviet Intervention in Czechoslovakia, 1968 by : Jiri Valenta
Download or read book Soviet Intervention in Czechoslovakia, 1968 written by Jiri Valenta and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 1991-11-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new edition of his highly acclaimed work, Jiri Valenta adds his assessment of Soviet military decisionmaking in the 1980s to his earlier analysis of decisionmaking and crisis management in the Soviet bureaucracy and Warsaw Pact. Comparing the events of 1968 to the Kremlin's very different reaction to reforms now under way in Czechoslovakia and the rest of Eastern Europe, Valenta shows that Soviet politics were never simple. The USSR's foreign policy response to the "Prague Spring," he contends, was the result of a complex political process conditioned by bureaucratic inertia, coalition politics, and East European pressures.

Book Synopsis A History of Czechoslovakia Between the Wars by : Patrick Crowhurst
Download or read book A History of Czechoslovakia Between the Wars written by Patrick Crowhurst and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, Patrick Crowhurst identifies the crucial political problem that faced Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1939 - the rift between the Czechs and the Sudeten Germans that would open the way for the rise of Konrad Henlein's right-wing 'Sudeten Deutsch' party, and which was exploited ruthlessly by Hitler during Nazi Germany's 1938 annexation of Czechoslovakia. A History of Czechoslovakia Between the Wars deepens our understanding of a fragile Europe before World War II, and is essential for students and scholars of 20th century history.
