Nation of Bookworms is essential reading for bibliophiles on every continent.
Book Synopsis The Reception of Antiquity in Bohemian Book Culture from the Beginning of Printing Until 1547 by : Kamil Boldan
Download or read book The Reception of Antiquity in Bohemian Book Culture from the Beginning of Printing Until 1547 written by Kamil Boldan and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the historical development and important personalities of the time of transition from manuscript book culture to book printing in the years 1450-1550. The first part of the volume contains a thorough description of historical, social and technical background influencing the development of book printing in Bohemia and Moravia and the impact of book printing production on the contemporary Czech society. The authors described the specific historical conditions in the Kingdom of Bohemia after the pre-reformation Hussite movement. The newly emerged Utraquist confession spread in important parts of Bohemia which led to decrease of social and economic contacts between the Kingdom of Bohemia and Catholic states in Europe. Apart from that the decreased activity of Prague University had negative impact on literacy in Bohemia. These two main reasons were detrimental to the development of book printing in Bohemia. The low quality of first prints was not attractive for educated readers who rather chose better equipped foreign books, mainly in Latin. Book printing in Bohemia soon became a matter of closed Czech speaking public. One of the important consequences of this process was weak reception of humanism and classical antiquity in Czech culture, although the former was partly embraced in Bohemia in previous centuries anyway. The second part of the book presents the first printers and editors of printed books before 1550 with a summary of their publishing activities.

Download or read book Prague in Danger written by Peter Demetz and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2009-04-14 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dramatic account of life in Czechoslovakia's great capital during the Nazi Protectorate With this successor book to Prague in Black and Gold, his account of more than a thousand years of Central European history, the great scholar Peter Demetz focuses on just six short years—a tormented, tragic, and unforgettable time. He was living in Prague then—a "first-degree half-Jew," according to the Nazis' terrible categories—and here he joins his objective chronicle of the city under German occupation with his personal memories of that period: from the bitter morning of March 15, 1939, when Hitler arrived from Berlin to set his seal on the Nazi takeover of the Czechoslovak government, until the liberation of Bohemia in April 1945, after long seasons of unimaginable suffering and pain. Demetz expertly interweaves a superb account of the German authorities' diplomatic, financial, and military machinations with a brilliant description of Prague's evolving resistance and underground opposition. Along with his private experiences, he offers the heretofore untold history of an effervescent, unstoppable Prague whose urbane heart went on beating despite the deportations, murders, cruelties, and violence: a Prague that kept its German- and Czech-language theaters open, its fabled film studios functioning, its young people in school and at work, and its newspapers on press. This complex, continually surprising book is filled with rare human detail and warmth, the gripping story of a great city meeting the dual challenge of occupation and of war.

Download or read book Prague Mysteries written by Mirek Katzl and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prague is now one of the most popular tourist destinations of the world. Every year, the capital of the Czech Republic attracts visitors by the millions. Many claim that Prague is one of the most beautiful and intriguing cities they have ever seen. The city is known for its splendid cathedrals, palaces, medieval lanes, the famous 14th century Charles Bridge, the Prague Castle, and the nightlife. Czech history goes back more than a thousand years, and the Czech people have gone through very turbulent times. The country has had its ups and downs. In the 14th century, Prague was the seat of Emperor Charles IV and the political powerhouse of Central Europe. In the 16th century, Prague was the cultural capital of Europe under the rule of Emperor Rudolf II. The twentieth century saw Czechs fall first under Nazi occupation and then under the Soviet rule. It was not until 1989 when the Czechs were able to live in freedom again. Yet, Prague and the Czech Republic still remain somewhat of an enigma to many. This collection of short crime stories offers the reader a chance to learn more about the Czech psyche, while having fun reading mysteries by such authors as Karel Capek, Jaroslav Hasek or Franz Kafka. Many of the stories have never been translated into English until now.
Book Synopsis Old Czech Legends by : Alois Jirásek

Book excerpt: Written in the early 1890s, before Czech independence and in an age of patriotic upsurge and romanticism, these thirty-four tales quite naturally reflect a glorification of the Czech past. While the details of the legends are necessarily archaic, peopled by kings and noblemen, ghosts and magic, the themes are universal. Now at the dawn of a new era of Czech independence, they provide a fascinating new perspective to the contemporary situation.

Arousing on every level—political, erotic, intellectual, and above all, humorous." —Newsweek "The Book of Laughter and Forgetting calls itself a novel, although it is part fairy tale, part literary criticism, part political tract, part musicology, and part autobiography. It can call itself whatever it wants to, because the whole is genius." —New York Times Rich in its stories, characters, and imaginative range, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting is the novel that brought Milan Kundera his first big international success in the late 1970s. In seven wonderfully integrated parts, different aspects of human existence are magnified and reduced, reordered and emphasized, newly examined, analyzed, and experienced.
