Book excerpt: Mechanisms of resistance to plant viruses are diverse, and probably involve different types of recognition events. Often, a cascade of changes affecting broader aspects of defence and metabolism is switched on progressively after the initial recognition event. Virulence, i.e. resistence-breaking behaviour of the virus, involves a failure or alteration of recognition or subsequent signalling. Consequences of these recognition events are the ways in which the pathogenic effects on the host are exerted: formation of visible symptoms and control of plant growth. This volume offers a comprehensive coverage of the recognition and signalling events between plants and viruses whereby the particular attraction of viruses (and viroids) is that they can now be completely defined in molecular terms: they offer excellent opportunities for studying the molecular biology of signalling, and may even provide useful guidelines on how plants and cellular pathogens interact.

Book excerpt: A state-of-the-art overview of the intricate functional virus/host relationships that allow a virus or viroid to move cell-to-cell and systemically through the plant, as well as from plant to plant, and, thus, to spread infection. The book also illustrates the mechanisms by which viruses overcome plant defence responses, such as RNA silencing. Arabidopsis is used as an illustration of a plant host eminently suitable for genetic approaches to identify novel players in plant/virus interactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Textbook of Plant Virus Diseases deals with a discussion of different plant viruses, their properties, and the corresponding diseases these viruses cause. It includes a list of host plants of every virus arranged alphabetically. The book discusses the new types of disease vectors, such as root-infesting fungi, nematode worms, mites, and insects that are both biting and sucking. It also discusses the development of new techniques in electron microscopy that is used to characterize in detail the causal viruses of a number of plant virus diseases. Furthermore, it presents the development of plant virus serology, as well as the improved methods of virus isolation that allow the classification of viruses into related groups. The book includes a Bibliography and an Index of Synonyms that can be used in identifying given virus name. In addition, cross-references are included for searching a particular virus under the alternative names. This book will be invaluable to ecologists, environmentalists, agriculturalists, and other scientists interested in plant viruses. Biology students will also find this reference helpful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book elucidates the evolution of plant virus, genomic structure, diversity, plant-virus interaction, subcellular movement etc. The book reviews the biological machineries which allow the emergence of virus populations adapted by plant. The main objective of this book is the demonstration of a clear synergistic effect of plant viruses, an effect that was unexpectedly as important as applied alone. Ornamental plants are very popular and economically important worldwide. The international market of ornamentals is constantly expanding. Viruses and viroids can significantly reduce both decorative value and quality of propagated material of ornamentals. Due to the wide range of ornamental plant species and cultivars and their wide geographical distribution, the diversity of viruses that infect them is also high. The new emerging viruses are the causal agent for the economic loss of many important ornamental plants. Therefore, this book also adds value to current knowledge of virus stress response in ornamental plants and will provide the groundwork necessary for building future strategies for product enhancement. This book is of interest to teachers, researchers, capacity builders and policymakers. It can serve as additional reading material for undergraduate and graduate students of virology, agriculture and plant sciences.

Book excerpt: Plant virus and sub-viral pathogens pose severe constraints to the production of wide range of economically important crops worldwide. The crops raised both through true seed and vegetative propagated materials are affected with number of virus and virus-like diseases. The virus may enter into plants through seed planting materials or by vectors. Once the virus is in the field, it multiplies and spreads following definite patterns depending upon the nature of the vector and agro-meteorological conditions. Disease free crops and plants are great economic and social importance in feeding the world's population. Detection of virus and sub-viral agents at initial stages of infection is critical to reduce economic losses. For nearly two decades, ELISA and its variants played a major role in large scale virus testing and also in the production of virus-free planting materials.

Book excerpt: VIRUS DISEASES OF PLANTS VIRUS DISEASES OF PLANTS BY JOHN GRAINGER PH. D., B. Sc. OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS LONDON HUMPHREY MILFORD 1934 PREFACE THE need for a small book upon the subject of Plant Virus Diseases appeared during my teaching work at Leeds University and in the County of Yorkshire. The study of this subject is, indeed, developing rapidly, but it seemed that this was not sufficient justification for with holding a simple text-book from the student of Mycology or Plant Pathology. A comprehensive volume would be inappropriate, as yet, and would have a limited use. The aim of this book has therefore been to introduce the student to the phenorrfcria associated with Virus Diseases, rather than to provide him with descriptions of all known viroses it is typical rather than complete. Many pitfalls aw r ait the new worker on Virus Diseases, so it was decided to include descriptions of the various items of technique in common use. The list of references at the end of the volume will provide an introduction to the very extensive literature on the subject of Plant Viruses. In its compilation, accessibility and comprehensiveness o the papers quoted have been constantly in mind. The references cited in the text follow the general plan of the book, being representative, not exhaustive. It is with great pleasure that I acknowledge my in debtedness to many persons to my wife, for much con structive criticism and help, and to Dr. J. Henderson Smith, of Rothamsted, who criticized the manuscript in its early stages. Dr. J. Johnson, of Wisconsin University, U. S. A., has helped in ways too numerous to mention, and Prof. J. H. Priestley, of Leeds University, introduced me to the study of VirusDiseases of Plants, and helped consider ably in its prosecution. Many workers in Ireland, Holland, America, Germany, and our own country have given written and verbal communication of their results. The Oxford University Press has throughout been most cour teous and helpful. J-G - June, 1933. J CONTENTS . INTRODUCTORY. Historical i II. Book excerpt: A number of economically important diseases are caused by potyviruses, the largest group of plant viruses. Many of these diseases are distributed worldwide. The development of effective control strategies against viruses is dependent on the availability of reliable methods of identification and detection. To date this has not seemed possible for the potyvirus group, because of its size, complexity, and immense variation. This book brings together the collaborative efforts of exports in the field. It summarizes characteristics of potyviruses which relate to their taxonomy and points to areas which require consideration before an international consensus can be reached. Main topics dealt with in detail are: serological relationships, nucleic acid sequence information, biological properties, and specific problems with several virus subgroups or pairs of viruses.
