Book excerpt: In 1978, an international consortium of scientists from Canada, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Iceland, the United States, and West Germany successfully completed a research deep drilling project in Iceland. These scientists formed the International Crustal Research Drilling Group to organize further deep drilling investigations and to compare the results with those from the Deep Sea and Ocean Drilling Projects. From 1982-85, five holes were drilled at three sites in Cyprus to study the Troodos ophiolite. The drilling was part of an integrated petrological, structural, and geophysical study of the ophiolite, involving both field mapping and diamond drilling. This report is the third of three on the project, discussing holes drilled through the pillow lava succession and giving descriptions of the cores along with other geological, geophysical, and geochemical data.

Book excerpt: Because they are portions of the ancient oceanic lithosphere, ophiolites present a full stratigraphy of the oceanic crust and part of the earth's upper mantle. The Cyprus Crustal Study Project to investigate the Troodos ophiolite was approved in 1980 and was conceived as an integrated petrological, structural and geophysical study, involving both field mapping and diamond drilling. From 1980-82, field studies were started and drilling begun, continuing until March 1985 at three sites, at which 5 holes were drilled. This report presents a series of papers, with abstracts, on various aspects of the Project, including field relations, lithological description, petrography and mineralogy, geochemistry, paleomagnetic and rock magnetic properties, physical properties and other geophysical data, and a summary, data tables and core log description.

Book excerpt: A 2 km drill hole was planned as part of the Cyprus crustal study project to sample the lower part of the Troodos ophiolite. The hole was spudded in near the base of the sheeted dyke complex to determine the intrusive and compositional relationships within the dyke complex; the nature of the dyke gabbro transition; the age relationships of the spatially associated dykes, gabbros, and plagiogranites, the chemical and mineralogical variation within the plutonic section and hence whether the intrusives are a single magnetic sequence or a number of discrete plutons; and the nature and extent of hydrothermal alteration within the dykes and gabbros. It was anticipated that the drilling results, combined with field studies of the plutonic rocks and sheeted dykes, would provide a 3-dimensional model for the lower part of the ophiolite. This report details studies of the core material and the field relationships.

Book excerpt: This extensively updated new edition of the widely acclaimed Treatise on Geochemistry has increased its coverage beyond the wide range of geochemical subject areas in the first edition, with five new volumes which include: the history of the atmosphere, geochemistry of mineral deposits, archaeology and anthropology, organic geochemistry and analytical geochemistry. In addition, the original Volume 1 on "Meteorites, Comets, and Planets" was expanded into two separate volumes dealing with meteorites and planets, respectively. These additions increased the number of volumes in the Treatise from 9 to 15 with the index/appendices volume remaining as the last volume (Volume 16). Each of the original volumes was scrutinized by the appropriate volume editors, with respect to necessary revisions as well as additions and deletions. As a result, 27% were republished without major changes, 66% were revised and 126 new chapters were added. In a many-faceted field such as Geochemistry, explaining and understanding how one sub-field relates to another is key. Instructors will find the complete overviews with extensive cross-referencing useful additions to their course packs and students will benefit from the contextual organization of the subject matter Six new volumes added and 66% updated from 1st edition. The Editors of this work have taken every measure to include the many suggestions received from readers and ensure comprehensiveness of coverage and added value in this 2nd edition The esteemed Board of Volume Editors and Editors-in-Chief worked cohesively to ensure a uniform and consistent approach to the content, which is an amazing accomplishment for a 15-volume work (16 volumes including index volume)!

Book excerpt: Most of our knowledge about the physical structure and the chemical composition of the Earth's deep interior is inferred from seismic data. The interpretation of seismic waves generally follows the assumption that the Earth's physical structure is grossly layered and that fluctuations of the physical parameters within individual layers are smooth in structure and small in magnitude. While this view greatly facilitates the analytic and interpretative procedure, it is clearly at odds with evidence from outcrops and boreholes, which indicates that compositional, structural and petrophysical heterogeneity in the Earth prevails over a wide range of scales. This book is the first to unify three different views of crustal and upper mantle heterogeneity. It brings together the geological view, which is derived from the analysis of crustal exposures and deep boreholes; the stochastic view, which attempts to find order and structure in these seemingly chaotic data; and the seismological view, which considers the end product of the complex interaction of seismic energy with the heterogeneous structure at depth. John Goff and Klaus Holliger have compiled chapters that explore and quantify the relationship between geological and petrophysical heterogeneity and its seismic response, and use seismic data to probe the fabric of the Earth's interior. Geologists, geostaticians, and geophysicists alike will benefit from the integrative perspective presented in Heterogeneity in the Crust and Upper Mantle: Nature, Scaling, and Seismic Properties, making this text an unparalleled reference for professionals and students in Earth science fields.

Book excerpt: The geology and metallogeny of "base metal sulfide deposits" in Europe, Africa and Australia was the topic of the DMG-GDMB-SAG Joint Meeting held in Aachen (FRG), September 16-19, 1985. Divided into two parts, the presented papers cover the description and interpretation of sediment-hosted as well as volcanic-sediment-hosted and volcanic-hosted copper-zinc-lead (gold-silver) deposits. The present compilation is an overview of current research activities and results on copper-zinc-lead deposits in classical mining districts considering geological, lithological, geochemical and tectonic parameters of ore formation. Even in periods of depressed metal prices, "base metal sulfide deposits" still remain one of the most attractive mineral exploration targets. This extensive review provides valuable information to researchers and explorationists.
