This book was released on 1996-08-23 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selles documents nearly a century of Methodist education from the early seminary movement in Upper Canada, through the establishment of ladies' colleges, to the admission of women into the university. She reconstructs what life was like for women at these institutions and highlights changing ideologies, curricula, and views on women's education as well as introducing some of the unique personalities who shaped Methodist higher education. Selles concludes that by attempting to create an ideal Christian woman through education, Methodist education structures consciously created and imposed a class-based gender ideology.

This book was released on 1997-02-17 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An impressive list of specialists in the field examine the evangelical impulse in various denominations, from the mainstream Methodists, Presbyterians, Anglicans, and United, through Baptists, Mennonites, and Lutherans, to the more sectish groups, including Holiness, Christian Mission Alliance, and the Pentecostals. Also included are comparisons between Canadian and American, British, and Australian evangelicalism and essays on evangelical networks, leaders and revivals, women, and evangelicalism in the 1990s. Growing out of a conference sponsored by the Pew Charitable Trusts in 1995 at Queen's University, the essays elaborate a variety of important themes in the study of historical and contemporary evangelicalism and weave them together to provide an informative and challenging exploration of aspects of the evangelical experience in Canada. Contributors include Phyllis D. Airhart, Alvyn J. Austin, David W. Bebbington, Edith L. Blumhofer, Robert K. Burkinshaw, Sharon Anne Cook, Nancy Christie, P. Lorraine Coops, Duff Crerar, Michael Gauvreau, Daniel C. Goodwin, Andrew S. Grenville, Bruce L. Guenther, Bryan V. Hillis, D. Bruce Hindmarsh, Mark Hutchinson, William H. This book was released on 1960-12-15 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography is the first of a series of studies about higher education in Canada sponsored by the committee on the History of Higher Education in Canada established by the National Conference of Canadian Universities. Among its nearly 4,000 entries are included the books, pamphlets, theses, dissertations, and articles in journals and magazines which supply the context and commentary on the history of Canadian higher education. Part I of the Bibliography provides the context; our universities do not exist in a vacuum—they are part of the economic, political, religious and social life of the community. Part I, therefore, includes a section on Canadian Culture, listing histories of Canada and its provinces, of its religious and social institutions, of its art, its economy, racial groups, relations with other countries. In order to study higher education in relation to other levels of education, another section lists works concerned with educational developments and problems at all levels. Part II lists the works bearing directly on higher education in Canada, and includes sections on History and Organization, Curriculum and Teaching, The Professor, The Student. Entries are arranged in chronological order in all sections in order to present the progressive development of each topic, and a full Index enables easy reference by author. No distinction has been drawn between English- and French-language publications: Chemistry and Chimie are one subject. The relative proportion of English and French entries in a section is often significant as indicating differences in the frequency and importance of particular fields of study in our colleges.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While we know a great deal about the role religion played in institutions in Victorian Canada, its place in home and family life has remained relatively unexplored. Drawing on a treasure trove of family papers and material culture, Marguerite Van Die depicts religion as "lived experience" in a portrait of an emblematic Protestant middle-class family in Quebec's Eastern Townships. The Colbys were members of Canada's emerging economic elite, active in the local community, public life, and politics. Their lives offer rich insights into the construction and practice of domestic religion and the moral and social legislation of early post-Confederation Canada. Taking a multidisciplinary approach that locates the home rather than the church as the primary site of religious change, Van Die concludes that the origins and continuity of Protestant religion in Victorian Canada depended on a unique set of socioeconomic and cultural forces.Van Die is a sympathetic and perceptive observer and a gifted and deft interpreter. In her examination of the Colbys of Carrollcroft she draws attention to the links connecting domestic religion and private life, business concerns, and social change in one family's life over three generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Thomas Crobsy and the Tsimshian: Small Shoes for Feet Too Large, Clarence Bolt demonstrates that the Indians were conscious participants in the acculturation and conversion process -- as long as this met their goals -- and not merely passive receivers of the blessings as typically reported by the missionaries. In order to understand the complexities of Indian-European contact, Bolt argues, one must look at the reasons for the Indians' behaviour as well as those of the Europeans. He points out that the Indians actively influenced the manner in which their relationships with the white population developed, often resulting in a complex interaction in which the values of both groups rubbed off on each other.
