Book Synopsis The Reformation: A Very Short Introduction by : Peter Marshall
Download or read book The Reformation: A Very Short Introduction written by Peter Marshall and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-10-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reformation transformed Europe, and left an indelible mark on the modern world. It began as an argument about what Christians needed to do to be saved, but rapidly engulfed society in a series of fundamental changes. This Very Short Introduction provides a lively and up-to-date guide to the process. It explains doctrinal debates in a clear and non-technical way, but is equally concerned to demonstrate the effects the Reformation had on politics, society, art, and minorities. Peter Marshall argues that the Reformation was not a solely European phenomenon, but that varieties of faith exported from Europe transformed Christianity into a truly world religion. The complex legacy of the Reformation is also assessed; its religious fervour produced remarkable stories of sanctity and heroism, and some extraordinary artistic achievements, but violence, holy war, and martyrdom were equally its products. A paradox of the Reformation - that it intensified intolerance while establishing pluralism - is one we still wrestle with today. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Book Synopsis Salvation History by : Geoffrey C. Bingham
Download or read book Salvation History written by Geoffrey C. Bingham and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term 'salvation history' is here used in a non-technical manner. It simply means, 'History from beginning to end. Events chronicled as they happened, all being understood, in the ultimate, to refer to God's purpose of salvation for man and His universe.' In other words, anyone reading the Scriptures from beginning to end - especially if he were to read them many times, and with increasing knowledge - would understand that history, as the Bible tells it, is simply the acts of God, and these are all with a view to fulfilling God's purposes of salvation. Much of history, of course, does not seem immediately or directly related to salvation. That is only because we take a specialised or particularistic view of salvation. As we shall see, God's intention, before the foundation of the world, was that it should climax just as He wished, and so nothing happens in a careless, loose or haphazard fashion, although, of course it often appears to be this way. The term 'Salvation History' is used by some scholars in a technical manner. They mean by this term either, (a) The history of salvation takes place in a supra-historical sphere, which cannot be researched after a secular manner. (In fact, it is accessible only to faith. It is the opposite to objective historicity.) Or, (b) God's salvation is connected with real historical events which have been witnessed, and which can be interpreted, once given the key that history relates to revelation and salvation. Faith is still needed to understand and interpret the events which stretch from before creation to the ultimate new creation, when history as we know it will have been sealed off. That history has a beginning and an end, is of course indicated Biblically, but is only acceptable to faith.

Book Synopsis The Promise of Salvation by : Martin Riesebrodt
Download or read book The Promise of Salvation written by Martin Riesebrodt and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has religion persisted across the course of human history? Secularists have predicted the end of faith for a long time, but religions continue to attract followers. Meanwhile, scholars of religion have expanded their field to such an extent that we lack a basic framework for making sense of the chaos of religious phenomena. To remedy this state of affairs, Martin Riesebrodt here undertakes a task that is at once simple and monumental: to define, understand, and explain religion as a universal concept. Instead of propounding abstract theories, Riesebrodt concentrates on the concrete realities of worship, examining religious holidays, conversion stories, prophetic visions, and life-cycle events. In analyzing these practices, his scope is appropriately broad, taking into consideration traditions in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Daoism, and Shinto. Ultimately, Riesebrodt argues, all religions promise to avert misfortune, help their followers manage crises, and bring both temporary blessings and eternal salvation. And, as The Promise of Salvation makes clear through abundant empirical evidence, religion will not disappear as long as these promises continue to help people cope with life.
Download or read book Salvation History written by Sungku Kang and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-14 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salvation history can be thought of as twofold: one is that God Himself personally takes action and the other is God has humans act. An example of the latter is Exodus in which God had Moses lead the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan. The skin garment that God made with slain animals for the fallen Adam is an example of the former. Adam's fall is the very starting point of God's saving acts in human history. In His saving acts, God utilized his sin as the means of salvation. However, God's plan on saving human beings began far ahead of the creation of Adam, for omniscient God already knew of Adam's fall before the world had begun. As Apostle Peter confirms, God's will to save lost sinners was planned from the very beginning and Jesus Christ was chosen before the creation of the world as our Savior. In His saving plan, Almighty God reversed all the negatives that would arise from Adam's fall into positives, triumphing over them by the cross. We need to be clothed in the robe of righteousness, the garments of salvation through Jesus Christ. The fig leaf coverings sewn by human efforts cannot cover our nakedness. In essence, the grace of salvation originates from God, not from fallible humans. Current human history has been heading towards a thorough restoration of God's image. When the full and perfect restoration of God's image is accomplished, salvation history will finally be complete. Although heavily infected by sin, we have constantly been advancing towards the perfect restoration of God's image and likeness. When Jesus Christ returns to us, our defiled image of God will be transformed into His perfect likeness. On the day when He appears, as Apostle John says, we shall be like Him. That day will be the very end of human history. On that very day, at long last, God's redemptive plan will be completed.

Book Synopsis History of Christianity by : Paul Johnson
Download or read book History of Christianity written by Paul Johnson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.
