Book excerpt: This book examines how pacemakers and defibrillators participate in transforming life and death in high-tech societies. In both popular and medical accounts, these internal devices are often portrayed as almost magical technologies. Once implanted in bodies, they do not require any ‘user’ agency. In this unique and timely book, Nelly Oudshoorn argues that any discourse or policy assuming a passive role for people living with these implants silences the fact that keeping cyborg bodies alive involves their active engagement. Pacemakers and defibrillators not only act as potentially life-saving technologies, but simultaneously transform the fragility of bodies by introducing new vulnerabilities. Oudshoorn offers a fascinating examination of what it takes to become a resilient cyborg, and in the process develops a valuable new sociology of creating ‘resilient’ cyborgs.

Haunted by flickering memories of a betrayal, Kai embarks on a thrilling journey to uncover the secrets buried within his own mind. Aided by Anya, a fierce rebel fighter, and Maya, a resourceful scavenger, Kai must navigate the treacherous labyrinth of a decaying city and infiltrate the heart of the emotionless corporation, Zenith. Their fight for the truth takes them from desolate ruins to hidden rebel hideouts, where they uncover a shocking conspiracy. Zenith, the corporation that controls every aspect of life, is not just suppressing emotions – they are developing technology to erase them entirely. As Kai delves deeper into the stolen data chip, he discovers a classified project codenamed 'Emotional Suppression'. This revelation sheds light on the Uprising, a rebellion Kai unknowingly played a part in, and ignites a fire within him. The data suggests Kai himself was a pawn in Zenith's twisted game. Fragmented memories resurface, painting a picture of a loyal soldier framed for a crime he didn't commit. Kai's former friend, Lucas, emerges as a potential ally, someone who may hold the key to unlocking the secrets of the past. But with Zenith hot on their trail, Kai and Anya must face a relentless enemy. Their fight isn't just about personal redemption; it's about the future of humanity itself. As they build an unlikely alliance with other rebels, Kai and Anya become symbols of resistance in a world devoid of feeling. Can they decipher the cryptic files, expose Zenith's true motives, and find Lucas before it's too late? In this gripping techno-thriller, Kai's journey for self-discovery becomes a fight for the very soul of humanity, where emotions are not a weakness, but a weapon against a sterile, emotionless world.

Book excerpt: A concise introduction to cyborg theory that examines the way in which technology is situated, political, and embodied. This introduction to cyborg theory provides a critical vantage point for analyzing the claims around emerging technologies like automation, robots, and AI. Cyborg analyzes and reframes popular and scholarly conversations about cyborgs from the perspective of feminist cyborg theory. Drawing on their combined decades of training, teaching, and research in the social sciences, design, and engineering education, Laura Forlano and Danya Glabau introduce an approach called critical cyborg literacy. Critical cyborg literacy foregrounds power dynamics and pays attention to the ways that social and cultural factors such as gender, race, and disability shape how technology is imagined, developed, used, and resisted. Forlano and Glabau offer critical cyborg literacy as a way of thinking through questions about the relationship between humanity and technology in areas such as engineering and computing, art and design, and health care and medicine, as well as the social sciences and humanities. Cyborg examines whether modern technologies make us all cyborgs—if we consider, for instance, the fact that we use daily technologies at work, have technologies embedded into our bodies in health care applications, or use technology to critically explore possibilities as artists, designers, activists, and creators. Lastly, Cyborg offers perspectives from critical race, feminist, and disability thinkers to help chart a path forward for cyborg theory in the twenty-first century.

Cyborgs, robots, avatars, and bio-technologically created beings are new entities that exist alongside biological human beings. As with many emerging technologies, many people will find the concept foreign and frightening. There is a strong possibility that these entities will be mistreated. Philosophical Issues of Human Cyborgization and the Necessity of Prolegomena on Cyborg Ethics discusses the ethics of human cyborgization as well as emerging technologies of robots and avatars that exhibit human-like qualities. The chapters build a strong case for the necessity of cyborg ethics and protocols for preserving the vitality of life within an ever-advancing technological society. Covering topics such as cyborg hacking, historical reality, and naturalism, this book is a dynamic resource for scientists, ethicists, cyber behavior professionals, students and professors of both technological and philosophical studies, faculty of higher education, philosophers, AI engineers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and academicians.

Your organs are failing and require replacement. If you had the choice, would you prefer organs from other humans or non-human animals, or would you choose a ‘cybernetic’ medical implant? Using a range of social science methods and drawing on the sociology of the body and embodiment, biomedicine and technology, this book asks what happens to who we are (our identity) when we change what we are (our bodies)? From surveying young adults about whether they would choose options such as 3-D bioprinting, living or deceased human donation, or non-human animal or implantable biomechanical devices, to interviewing those who live with an implantable cardiac defibrillator, Haddow invites us to think about what kind of relationship we have with our bodies. She concludes that the reliance on ‘cybernetic’ medical devices create ‘everyday cyborgs’ who can experience alienation and new forms of vulnerability at implantation and activation. Embodiment and everyday cyborgs invites readers to consider the relationship between personal identity and the body, between humans and non-human animals, and our increasing dependency on ‘smart’ implantable technology. The creation of new techno-organic hybrid bodies makes us acutely aware of our own bodies and how ambiguous the experience of embodiment actually is. It is only through understanding how modifications such as transplantation, amputation and implantation make our bodies a ‘presence’ to us, Haddow argues, that we realise our everyday experience of our bodies as an absence.
