Anschließend wird auf die verschiedenen Medien und Methoden eingegangen und auf die Abgrenzung zum traditionellen Mobbing Bezug genommen. Es wird geklärt, welche Rollenverteilung es im Cybermobbingprozess gibt und welche Folgen diese Art der Attacken für Opfer und Täter haben können. Folglich werden die zentralen Aspekte der deutschlandweiten Studie „Cyberlife ─ Spannungsfeld zwischen Faszination und Gefahr“ von „Bündnis gegen Cybermobbing“, beschrieben. „Bei Cyber-Mobbing geht es darum, dass neue Techniken, wie z.B. E-Mail, Chats, Instant Messaging Systeme (wie z.B. ICQ oder MSN) oder auch Handys eingesetzt werden, um immer wieder und mit voller Absicht andere zu verletzen, sie zu bedrohen, sie zu beleidigen, Gerüchte über sie zu verbreiten oder ihnen Angst zu machen (Dambach, 2011, S. 15).“ Solche und sinngemäß ähnliche Definitionen sind häufig in einschlägiger Fachliteratur zum Thema Cybermobbing zu finden. Oft übertragen die Autoren die Definition des klassischen Mobbings, auf die des Cybermobbings und erweitern diese um die neuen Kommunikationsmedien Internet und Handy. Fraglich ist jedoch, ob die teilweise Übernahme der Definition des klassischen Mobbing tatsächlich angemessen auf das Phänomen Cybermobbings anzuwenden ist. Dass Cybermobbing mittels Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien geschieht, steht außer Frage.
