Book Synopsis Revolution in the House by : Margaret H. Darrow
Download or read book Revolution in the House written by Margaret H. Darrow and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent did the French Revolution "revolutionize" the French family? In examining the changes in inheritance laws brought on by the Revolution, Margaret Darrow gives a lively account of the mixed effects legislation had on families of this period. As a test case, she has chosen the southern city of Montauban, whose Roman-based law enabling testators to appoint their heirs was contradicted by the new laws instituting equal inheritance. Filled with vivid anecdotes, this book shows how Montauban families in varying social classes adapted their financial strategies to cope with rapidly shifting circumstances, often creating solutions not envisioned by the legislators. With family history as its focus, Revolution in the House also provides a detailed social history of Montauban during the French Revolution. Its sources are archival, and its argument rests upon a statistical study of the making and unmaking of family fortunes across several generations. Darrow shows that in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the transmission of wealth expressed a way of life--on the social, political, religious, and economic levels--not only at the top of society but throughout the entire social order. Book Synopsis The Kindness Revolution by : Ed Horrell
Download or read book The Kindness Revolution written by Ed Horrell and published by Amacom Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-energize your company's customer service--and inspire greater customer loyalty--using the power of kindness. Despite what some may think, the war against bad customer service will not be won on the front lines by changing specific techniques and processes at the customer contact level. Rather, it's a culture of kindness and consideration--up and down the entire organization--that fundamentally changes employee attitudes toward customers. It's what makes the difference between a short-term relationship and long-term customer loyalty. Based on extensive research and featuring real-life examples from companies known for their outstanding customer service such as L.L. Bean, FedEx, and Chick-fil-A, The Kindness Revolution examines how eliminating indifference in the workplace from the top down helps fuel unbelievably positive customer interactions. The book shows readers what "kind" companies have in common--a widespread culture of dignity, respect, courtesy, and kindness--and how to replicate it at their own organization. Inspiring and practical, The Kindness Revolution shows readers how to take the critical step toward truly outstanding--and self-perpetuating--customer service.

Book Synopsis The Color Revolution by : Regina Lee Blaszczyk
Download or read book The Color Revolution written by Regina Lee Blaszczyk and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of color and commerce from haute couture to automobile showrooms to interior design. When the fashion industry declares that lime green is the new black, or instructs us to “think pink!,” it is not the result of a backroom deal forged by a secretive cabal of fashion journalists, designers, manufacturers, and the editor of Vogue. It is the latest development of a color revolution that has been unfolding for more than a century. In this book, the award-winning historian Regina Lee Blaszczyk traces the relationship of color and commerce, from haute couture to automobile showrooms to interior design, describing the often unrecognized role of the color profession in consumer culture. Blaszczyk examines the evolution of the color profession from 1850 to 1970, telling the stories of innovators who managed the color cornucopia that modern artificial dyes and pigments made possible. These “color stylists,” “color forecasters,” and “color engineers” helped corporations understand the art of illusion and the psychology of color. Blaszczyk describes the strategic burst of color that took place in the 1920s, when General Motors introduced a bright blue sedan to compete with Ford's all-black Model T and when housewares became available in a range of brilliant hues. She explains the process of color forecasting—not a conspiracy to manipulate hapless consumers but a careful reading of cultural trends and consumer taste. And she shows how color information flowed from the fashion houses of Paris to textile mills in New Jersey. Today professional colorists are part of design management teams at such global corporations as Hilton, Disney, and Toyota. The Color Revolution tells the history of how colorists help industry capture the hearts and dollars of consumers.

Download or read book Imperial Mud written by James Boyce and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2020-07-02 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **WINNER OF THE HISTORY AND TRADITION CATEGORY, EAST ANGLIAN BOOK AWARDS 2020** **LONGLISTED FOR THE RSL ONDAATJE PRIZE 2021** 'A real page-turner ... a warning about what happens when the rich and powerful dress up their avarice as "progress" - a lesson we could do with learning today.' Dixe Wills, BBC Countryfile magazine FROM A MULTI-AWARD-WINNING HISTORIAN, AN ARRESTING NEW HISTORY OF THE BATTLE FOR THE FENS. Between the English Civil Wars and the mid-Victorian period, the proud indigenous population of the Fens of eastern England fought to preserve their homeland against an expanding empire. After centuries of resistance, their culture and community were destroyed, along with their wetland home - England's last lowland wilderness. But this was no simple triumph of technology over nature - it was the consequence of a newly centralised and militarised state, which enriched the few while impoverishing the many. In this colourful and evocative history, James Boyce brings to life not only colonial masters such as Oliver Cromwell and the Dukes of Bedford but also the defiant 'Fennish' them- selves and their dangerous and often bloody resistance to the enclosing landowners. We learn of the eels so plentiful they became a kind of medieval currency; the games of 'Fen football' that were often a cover for sabotage of the drainage works; and the destruction of a bountiful ecosystem that had sustained the Fennish for thousands of years and which meant that they did not have to submit in order to survive. Masterfully argued and imbued with a keen sense of place, Imperial Mud reimagines not just the history of the Fens, but the history and identity of the English people.
