Book Synopsis Curtiss XBTC-2 "Eggbeater" by : Bob Kowalski
Download or read book Curtiss XBTC-2 "Eggbeater" written by Bob Kowalski and published by Naval Fighters. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curtiss Model 98 XBTC-2 was designed because of a request for a single seat dive/torpedo bomber in 1942. A Wright R 3350 with a four bladed prop should power the -1, a P&W R-4360 with 3-bladed contra props the -2. Work on both variants was slow, to other commitments and stability problems were encountered during wind tunnel testing. The -2 was first flown on January 20 1945, and all work on the -1 was terminated after 1943. The crash of the first prototype in February 1947, and of the second in August 1947, ended the development. March 1945, the Navy ordered 10 relatively minor derivatives of the XBTC-2. They had 2,500-horsepower Wright R-3350-4 engines turning single-rotation propellers. Progress was faster on this model, and the first flight was made in January 1946. Gross weight was 19,072 pounds, and max speed was 297 mph at sea level and 330 mph at 17,000 feet. Armament was two 20mm cannon, eight five-inch rockets and one 2,000-pound bomb or a torpedo.

Book Synopsis Convair XFY-1 Pogo by : Skeets Coleman
Download or read book Convair XFY-1 Pogo written by Skeets Coleman and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947, both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy sponsored VTOL design studies called project Hummingbird. The rapid development of increasingly powerful powerplants had reached the point where a true VTOL aircraft was in the realm of possibility. The U.S. Navy's firsthand experiences with Japan's Kamikaze taught them the vulnerability of their great mobile peacekeepers, the carrier. Because of this experience the Navy felt that the only way to protect any naval presence in enemy waters was to equip all ships with a VTOL fighter.
Book Synopsis Douglas R4D-8/C-117D Super Gooney by : Steve Ginter
Download or read book Douglas R4D-8/C-117D Super Gooney written by Steve Ginter and published by Naval Fighters. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This aircraft was used as a transport, VIP carrier, station hack, a trainer with VT-29, and its usage in Antarctica with VX-6 from 1952 into the 1980s. The DC-3S was a Douglas venture to add capability and life to the post-war fleet of surplus DC-3s, C-47s and R4Ds. It was an remanufactured aircraft with a stretched fuselage, new taller and wider tail group, new square tip outer wings, larger engines and fully enclosed main gear housings. It did not find favor with the airlines which instead turned to Convairs and Martins, but found a home in the Navy and Marines. 96 aircraft were eventually re-manufactured as R4D-8s and 4 as R4D-8Zs.

Book Synopsis Brewster F2A Buffalo and Export Variants by : Richard Dann
Download or read book Brewster F2A Buffalo and Export Variants written by Richard Dann and published by Ginter Books. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive monograph covers the entire history of Brewster's much maligned Buffalo fighter aircraft. The book starts out with the background of the Brewster Aeronautical Corporation and the events that led to the selection of the F2A as the Navy's first monoplane fighter. Following this, each variant of the aircraft is covered in detail including all three major variants purchased by the US. Navy as well as the versions purchased by Belgium, Finland, Great Britain, and the Netherlands. Indivdual squadron histories are also included as they relate to the F2A. Many interviews are included with pilots who flew the Buffalo, some with glowing comments on its performance, while others cast a less than stellar light on the Brewster. It is up to the reader to draw his own conclusions as to where the F2A sits in the history of modern aerial warfare. It is interesting to note that the Brewster 239, as used by the Finnish Air Force during the 1939-1945 period achieved the highest kill ratio of any fighter plane of the war with an impressive 26-1 score. Finland produced many Aces with the Buffalo, including the all-time high scoring Buffalo Ace, Hans Wind with 39 aerial kills, and followed closely by Ilmari Juutilainen with 34. The book is lavishly illustrated with over 300 photos, many of which have never been published. This is the ultimate history of the Brewster Buffalo.
Book Synopsis The Boeing XF8B-1 Fighter by : Jared A. Zichek
Download or read book The Boeing XF8B-1 Fighter written by Jared A. Zichek and published by Schiffer Pub Limited. This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boeing XF8B-1 "Five-in-One" fighter was the last piston engine fighter built by Boeing and very nearly the last fighter built by the company until its merger with McDonnell Douglas in 1997. Conceived in 1943, the XF8B-1 was unusual for a naval fighter in having an internal bomb bay, tremendous range, and counter-rotating propellers, the latter necessitated by its huge Pratt & Whitney R-4360 "Wasp Major" engine, a 28-cylinder air-cooled radial that produced a staggering 3,500 hp. An exhaustive account based on extensive research at the National Archives and Boeing Historical Archive, this book contains an authoritative text along with hundreds of rare photos, general arrangement drawings, color profiles, artist's impressions, and extensive extracts from the pilot's and maintenance manuals.
Book Synopsis Douglas XSB2D-1 & BTD-1 Destroyer by : Bob Kowalski
Download or read book Douglas XSB2D-1 & BTD-1 Destroyer written by Bob Kowalski and published by . This book was released on 1995-07-01 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Kowalski continues the saga of the bomber Torpedo (BT) program and the similar Scout Bomber (SB) program with the obscure story of the Douglas XSB2D-1 and BTD-1 "Destroyer." The United States was still at peace when the Navy issued a requirement for a design to serve with the fleet as both a successor to the SBD, which would be nearing obsolescence, and as a possible replacement for the SB2C, which was undergoing what can charitably be called a prolonged proportional development period. To meet this requirement, two prototypes of the SXB2D-1 were ordered by the Navy on June 30, 1941.
Book Synopsis Douglas F5D-1 Skylancer by : Steve Ginter
Download or read book Douglas F5D-1 Skylancer written by Steve Ginter and published by . This book was released on 1996-08-01 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Douglas F5D-1 Skylancer was a progressive development of the F4D-1 Skyray. Many people believe that the Skylancer was a faster and better choice than its competitor, the Vought F8U Crusader. They believe that it had inherently better stretch potential to the point where it could have out-performed the F-4 Phantom if the J-79 engine had been installed as envisioned by Ed Heinemann.

Book Synopsis McDonnell F3H Demon by : Steve Ginter
Download or read book McDonnell F3H Demon written by Steve Ginter and published by Naval Fighters. This book was released on 1982 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The McDonnell F3H Demon is probably the least remembered modern Naval fighter, even though it was our first true all-weather missile fighter. When the weather prevented the agile F8U, F4D and F11F from flying, the Demon could still be launched. A glamorous plane the Demon was not, primarily due to its lack of performance. The F3H remained underpowered throughout its career, so much so that it was tagged by fleet pilots as the "lead sled."
Book Synopsis Consolidated Vultee XB-46 by : Steve Ginter
Download or read book Consolidated Vultee XB-46 written by Steve Ginter and published by Ginter Books. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Consolidated Vultee (Convair) XB-46 was a four-jet medium bomber built to a 1944 USAAF requirement. It was the largest of the four different bombers built to this requirement. The other three were the North American XB-45, the Boeing XB-47 and the Martin XB-48. The winner of the competition was the XB-45, but Boeing was allowed to continue development of their offering with swept wings. Because of this, only one XB-46 was built. It was to be the first all-pneumatic aircraft built with pneumatics operating the landing gear, brakes, and bomb bay doors. This system was highly successful as it saved a lot of weight and allow the quickest activation of landing gear and bomb bay doors seen to that date. The first flight was on April 2, 1947 and the aircraft was utilized until November 1950. The aircraft's biggest legacy was its beauty!
