En este principio se inspira la metodología de este texto. Su estructura general responde al criterio funcional de los denominados actos del lenguaje, agrupados por áreas. Cada lectura presenta una situación relativa al tipo de acto que se considera: en ella aparecen los medios lingüísticos que se requieran para satisfacer las exigencias de comunicación de que se trata, partiendo de la lengua base, relativamente estandarizada y moderadamente coloquial del español actual. Las lecturas se ofrecen como punto de partida que estimula la imaginación y la discusión, y se presta a la creación de situaciones análogas. Los cuestionarios que siguen y el ejercicio léxico de sustitución de voces, aseguran la comprensión del texto. La lectura es también aprovechada en el ámbito estructural. Las cuestiones morfológicas y sintácticas presentadas son analizadas y estudiadas para consolidar los hábitos del lenguaje mediante su ejercitación. Se amplían los ejercicios del léxico para su enriquecimiento. Los ejercicios de escritura deben considerarse como una recopilación de cuanto el estudiante ha aprendido y como medio para capacitarlo en el dominio de la redacción.

In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems.
