These records were analyzed to determine the general character of the currents, the volume transport at different levels above the canyon floor, the power spectral estimates of the upcanyon and cross-caynon directional components, and the coherence between directional components. Current speed variations appeared as a series of peaks occurring every 5 to 6 hr with maxima of 17 to 21 cm/sec. Current directions oscillated with a discernible period of about 12 hr. Currents 30 m above the bottom were aligned nearly along the canyon axis; currents 60 m above the bottom were nearly perpendicular to the canyon axis. The spectral analysis indicated tides as a major driving force of the deep currents, but also indicated the presence of other forcing functions, possibly internal waves, with shorter periods. The coherence between instruments was low, suggesting the possible presence of a near-bottom boundary layer, or that significant signal deterioration was caused by noise.

Book excerpt: Five data cruises were taken on board R/V ACANIA to study the effect on the Geomagnetic Electrokinetograph (GEK) of various environmental factors, including wings, tides, and internal waves, over the Monterey Submarine Canyon. An in situ current meter was used successfully on one occasion to obtain data to establish a k-factor for the GEK in the Submarine Canyon, and to directly measure the particle velocities of internal waves. The observed surface currents measured with the GEK all exhibited little or no correlation with winds and tides. The flows were all generally southerly; their averages agreed with previous measurements made with the GEK. This direction of flow was opposite to the generalizations of Scott and possibly agreed with those of Pirie, depending upon the placement of one of his eddies. The k-factor for the GEK could not be determined because currents measured directly in the thermocline were found to be not correlated with the GEK measurements. However, the average current speeds were in reasonable agreement with currents measured at other times in Monterey Bay, leading to the conclusion that k cannot be much greater than the assumed value of 1.0. Book excerpt: Near-bottom currents in Monterey Submarine Canyon and the adjacent shelf were collected using Savonius current meters. Simultaneous measurements were made with one current meter on the shelf at a depth of 91 meters and one meter located in the Canyon at 366 meters. Another record was taken in the Canyon at the 366-meter location. Current speed, current direction and water temperature were recorded continuously for approximately seven days in each record. First-order statistics were calculated and plotted for these time-series data. Scatter diagrams, progressive vector diagrams and power spectra were also computed and analyzed for the records collected during this study and for records of sufficient length from previous investigations. Net current set was in a cross-canyon direction for many of the records; however, the currents in the Canyon oscillated as reported in previous investigations. The oscillations were not as evident on the shelf record. Mean and maximum current speeds recorded in the Canyon were 10 and 51 cm/sec, respectively. On the shelf these values were 7 and 25 cm/sec. Observed values of net current set and volume transport are related to Monterey Bay seasonal water conditions. (Author).

Book excerpt: Bottom current measurements were taken in the head of Monterey Submarine Canyon in a water depth of 130 meters (72 fathoms) utilizing an Ekman current meter placed 480 centimeters (15.7 feet) above the bottom. Currents were observed to follow the canyon axes, and flow was seaward (down-canyon) on the rising tide and coastward (up-canyon) on the falling tide. Current speed was sometimes fairly steady and other times variable. It ranged between 0 and 41 centimeters per second (0 to 0.8 knot) and had a median speed of 10 cm/sec (0.2 knot). The six hours centered around low tide generally had considerably stronger currents than the similar period of time centered around high tide. (Author).

Book excerpt: An investigation of near-bottom currents in the head of Monterey Submarine Canyon was conducted between March 1967 and May 1968. Continuous observations of water temperature, current speed and direction were obtained over periods ranging from 5 hours to 162 hours using an in situ Savonius rotor current measuring system. Basic statistical parameters and power spectra were calculated for each record. These revealed an average current speed of about 0.23 knot (standard deviation of 0.17 knot), and a current direction which indicates flow reversals predominantly along the canyon axis. Current and water temperature oscillations indicated a strong semidiurnal component. Water temperature changes also showed seasonal variation that agrees with the seasonal means of the region. Current speeds as high as 1 knot were measured. (Author).

Book excerpt: April and May of 1988 along the central California coast were characterized as a period of strong coastal upwelling produced by moderate to strong northwesterly winds present throughout the period. A product of this upwelling event was the manifestation of southward geostrophic currents which extended to a distance of approximately 50 km from the coast. From 08 to 11 May 1988, hydrographic surveying was conducted within the Monterey Bay. Internal waves, with amplitudes of up to 30 m were present throughout the period and effectively masked the mean signal, implying that averaging is essential to avoid aliasing. The current -- temperature -- depth (CTD) data were averaged to estimate the mean field during this time frame. Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data, were also averaged. The mean flow field and dynamic topography implied anticyclonic surface flow with cyclonic flow at 200 m depth. ADCP derived mean flows compared favorably with geostrophic mean flow rate in all areas except one, the deep outflow region along the northern wall of the Canyon. Application of ocean models of boundary layer flow of the geostrophic mean field yielded flows similar to those described above. Wind stress experiments indicated that strong wind field may influence surface circulation in the Bay. Interactions between the coastal upwelling geostrophic jet and the Monterey Submarine Canyon is believed to have been a major mechanism responsible for the mean flow.

Analysis of sea level records indicate that a mixed, predominantly semidiurnal tide nearly co-oscillates within the bay. Analysis of month-long moored ADCP records obtained in the winter and summer of 1992 reveals that tidal-band currents account for approximately 50 percent of the total current variance in the upper ocean (20-200 m). A relatively strong (7 cm/s) fortnightly tide (MSf) is present in both seasons. Considerable rotation of the semidiurnal ellipse orientations occurs with depth during both seasons. A month- long record of surface current measurements obtained with CODAR, an HF radar system, during September 1992 reveals that the Monterey Submarine Canyon clearly influences the strength and direction of semidiurnal (M2) tidal currents. Good agreement exists between the strength and orientation of ADCP- and CODAR-derived tidal ellipses, with the exception of the constituent K1. Large, spatially uniform K1 surface currents (20-30 cm/s) appear to be the result of diurnal sea breeze forcing.

Book excerpt: Continuous bottom current measurements were taken in the head of Monterey Submarine Canyon in water depths ranging from 80 to 110 fathoms utilizing an in situ Savonius Rotor current measuring system placed approximately 40 feet above the bottom. Concurrent wind, wave, and tidal data were collected with the current measurements. Basic statistical parameters and power spectra were then computed for each time series obtained. Current speeds in excess of one knot were measured, with the current direction being predominantly along the canyon axis. Water temperature, current speed and direction all exhibit cyclic fluctuations of a periodicity equal to that of the semidiurnal tide. Cold, high-speed currents flow up-canyon (landward) on the falling tide while warmer, slower currents flow down-canyon (seaward) on the rising tide. Wind and wave conditions do not appear to have any significant effects on the near-bottom currents. (Author).

Book excerpt: The geomagnetic electrokinetograph (GEK) was used to measure surface currents near the center of Monterey Bay during six separate 24-hour periods from May through July, 1972. An average of 244 current vectors were derived for each cruise. The mean currents from these cruises are all southerly and ranged from 4.1 cm/sec to 20.4 cm/sec. The average of these mean currents is 12.1 cm/sec toward 163T. These values were compared with individual currents derived from dynamic topographies from the same period. Diurnal and semi-diurnal variations of the current were studied after subjecting the data to a Fourier analysis. It was concluded that there must be at least an indirect coupling of the ocean currents with the semi-diurnal tide at the data point. The diurnal component also is important; it may be tidal or inertial, or merely related to the passage of the sun. (Author).

Book excerpt: Shipboard ADCP and CTD measurements were conducted in Monterey Submarine Canyon in April and October 1994 to determine the propagation characteristics and energy levels of the semidiurnal internal tide. The measurements reveal a bottom intensified internal tide propagating energy up canyon. The region of strongest motion is in a beam 150-200 m thick, centered approximately 150 m above the Canyon floor. Along canyon baroclinic M2 currents are typically 15-20 cm/s, an order of magnitude larger than the estimated barotropic tidal currents. In April 1994, the internal tidal beam is well described by a progressive wave, while in October 1994, the signal is standing along and perpendicular to the beam. The Princeton Ocean Model was used to study the generation and propagation of semidiurnal internal tides in submarine canyons and to investigate their sensitivity to canyon shape.

Book excerpt: This project studied the circulation and transport of material in Monterey Submarine Canyon. Five subsurface moorings supporting twelve current meters with temperature sensors (six also measured conductivity and light transmission) and six sediment traps were deployed. Numerous CTD casts were made during four cruises. As expected, tidal frequencies dominated the energy spectra, and mean currents were very weak. Surprisingly, a three-day oscillation was found at all the measurement sites within the canyon. Two sediment traps deployed in the narrower region of the canyon recorded dramatically different flux regimes, with the 780 m trap collecting 2-4 g m( -2) d( -1), and the 1360 m trap collecting 22-60 g m( -2) d( -1). The predominantly lithogenic composition of the material in the deeper trap is evidence that canyon wall resuspension events dominate the flux regime there, whereas the lower concentrations of lithogenic material in the shallower trap, together with the seasonal pattern in the opal flux, indicate the influence of seasonal phytoplankton blooms. The mass fluxes measured in the wider part of the canyon were only 0.2-1.7 g m( -2)d( -1).
