Book excerpt: A function containing several variables that remains unchanged for any permutation of the variables is called a symmetric function. Polynomials are a type of function. A symmetric polynomial refers to a type of polynomial P in n variables such that if any of the variables are swapped with each other, it remains the same polynomial. There are various types of symmetric polynomials including power-sum symmetric polynomials, elementary symmetric polynomials, complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials, monomial symmetric polynomials, and Schur polynomials. Symmetric polynomials have numerous applications in various areas of combinatorics, representation theory, mathematical physics, and mathematics. They are frequently found in Newton's identities and Vieta's formula. This book includes some of the vital pieces of works being conducted across the world, on various topics related to symmetric functions and polynomials, and their applications. It will serve as a valuable source of reference for graduate and postgraduate students.

Book excerpt: The theory of symmetric functions is an old topic in mathematics, which is used as an algebraic tool in many classical fields. With $\lambda$-rings, one can regard symmetric functions as operators on polynomials and reduce the theory to just a handful of fundamental formulas. One of the main goals of the book is to describe the technique of $\lambda$-rings. The main applications of this technique to the theory of symmetric functions are related to the Euclid algorithm and its occurrence in division, continued fractions, Pade approximants, and orthogonal polynomials. Putting the emphasis on the symmetric group instead of symmetric functions, one can extend the theory to non-symmetric polynomials, with Schur functions being replaced by Schubert polynomials. In two independent chapters, the author describes the main properties of these polynomials, following either the approach of Newton and interpolation methods, or the method of Cauchy and the diagonalization of a kernel generalizing the resultant. The last chapter sketches a non-commutative version of symmetric functions, with the help of Young tableaux and the plactic monoid. The book also contains numerous exercises clarifying and extending many points of the main text.

Book excerpt: This reissued classic text is the acclaimed second edition of Professor Ian Macdonald's groundbreaking monograph on symmetric functions and Hall polynomials. The first edition was published in 1979, before being significantly expanded into the present edition in 1995. This text is widely regarded as the best source of information on Hall polynomials and what have come to be known as Macdonald polynomials, central to a number of key developments in mathematics and mathematical physics in the 21st century Macdonald polynomials gave rise to the subject of double affine Hecke algebras (or Cherednik algebras) important in representation theory. String theorists use Macdonald polynomials to attack the so-called AGT conjectures. Macdonald polynomials have been recently used to construct knot invariants. They are also a central tool for a theory of integrable stochastic models that have found a number of applications in probability, such as random matrices, directed polymers in random media, driven lattice gases, and so on. Macdonald polynomials have become a part of basic material that a researcher simply must know if (s)he wants to work in one of the above domains, ensuring this new edition will appeal to a very broad mathematical audience. Featuring a new foreword by Professor Richard Stanley of MIT.

Book excerpt: The present volume contains the Proceedings of the Seventh Iberoamerican Workshop in Orthogonal Polynomials and Applications (EIBPOA, which stands for Encuentros Iberoamericanos de Polinomios Ortogonales y Aplicaciones, in Spanish), held at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Leganés, Spain, from July 3 to July 6, 2018. These meetings were mainly focused to encourage research in the fields of approximation theory, special functions, orthogonal polynomials and their applications among graduate students as well as young researchers from Latin America, Spain and Portugal. The presentation of the state of the art as well as some recent trends constitute the aim of the lectures delivered in the EIBPOA by worldwide recognized researchers in the above fields. In this volume, several topics on the theory of polynomials orthogonal with respect to different inner products are analyzed, both from an introductory point of view for a wide spectrum of readers without an expertise in the area, as well as the emphasis on their applications in topics as integrable systems, random matrices, numerical methods in differential and partial differential equations, coding theory, and signal theory, among others.

Book excerpt: One of the most classical areas of algebra, the theory of symmetric functions and orthogonal polynomials, has long been known to be connected to combinatorics, representation theory and other branches of mathematics. Written by perhaps the most famous author on the topic, this volume explains some of the current developments regarding these connections. It is based on lectures presented by the author at Rutgers University. Specifically, he gives recent results on orthogonal polynomials associated with affine Hecke algebras, surveying the proofs of certain famous combinatorial conjectures.

Book excerpt: Serving both as an introduction to the subject and as a reference, this book presents the theory in elegant form and with modern concepts and notation. It covers the general theory and emphasizes the classical types of orthogonal polynomials whose weight functions are supported on standard domains. The approach is a blend of classical analysis and symmetry group theoretic methods. Finite reflection groups are used to motivate and classify symmetries of weight functions and the associated polynomials. This revised edition has been updated throughout to reflect recent developments in the field. It contains 25% new material, including two brand new chapters on orthogonal polynomials in two variables, which will be especially useful for applications, and orthogonal polynomials on the unit sphere. The most modern and complete treatment of the subject available, it will be useful to a wide audience of mathematicians and applied scientists, including physicists, chemists and engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polynomials are well known for their ability to improve their properties and for their applicability in the interdisciplinary fields of engineering and science. Many problems arising in engineering and physics are mathematically constructed by differential equations. Most of these problems can only be solved using special polynomials. Special polynomials and orthonormal polynomials provide a new way to analyze solutions of various equations often encountered in engineering and physical problems. In particular, special polynomials play a fundamental and important role in mathematics and applied mathematics. Until now, research on polynomials has been done in mathematics and applied mathematics only. This book is based on recent results in all areas related to polynomials. Divided into sections on theory and application, this book provides an overview of the current research in the field of polynomials. Topics include cyclotomic and Littlewood polynomials; Descartes' rule of signs; obtaining explicit formulas and identities for polynomials defined by generating functions; polynomials with symmetric zeros; numerical investigation on the structure of the zeros of the q-tangent polynomials; investigation and synthesis of robust polynomials in uncertainty on the basis of the root locus theory; pricing basket options by polynomial approximations; and orthogonal expansion in time domain method for solving Maxwell's equations using paralleling-in-order scheme.

Book excerpt: The Vandermonde matrix naturally appears in systems of equations for applications of polynomial approximation. Solving the system, which requires inverting the Vandermonde matrix, may be preferred because researchers can utilize efficient matrix computation methods. However, the Vandermonde is ill-conditioned and prevents standard methods from calculating accurate entries to the inverse. Many of the derived algorithmic solutions to the Vandermonde inverse contain a mathematical expression called the Elementary Symmetric Polynomial (ESP). The ESP is computationally inefficient to solve directly, so there are also algorithms to solve them. The state-of-the-art ESP and inverse methods are fully recursive and may be more susceptible to noise perturbations in the Vandermonde matrix than a closed-form inverse method. In addition, the performances of the methods in a variety of applications in polynomial approximation are unexplored. This thesis investigates the utility of the state-of-the-art methods against a novel ESP and closed-form Vandermonde inverse method in applications of polynomial interpolation and Fourier reconstruction in the presence of Gaussian noise.
