Diagnostic cytology, however, developed slowly over a whole century, mainly in differentiating malignant from benign cells from various tissues. The decisive step in this development was the intensive investigation of one local ization by Papanicolaou: The application of cytology for screening in the field of gynecologic oncology made it an acknowledged technique. Consequently, materials inves tigated before were tested again on a larger scale and new ones were included into the program. The possibility of a wide-range application of this diag nostic method, which carries a low risk for the patient and is low in cost, attracted the specialists of many fields. One of the problems which has resulted is the coordination of training and quality assurance for a large group of people from different fields and with different interests and whose experience in morphology varies. In this volume general problems of cytology are dis cussed, as is the question "who is a medical cytologist?" Education and training are the topics of the contributions by Coleman, Holzner, Jenny, Koss and Muller, cover ing the situation in the European Community, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the USA. A special contribu tion by Lange concerns the situation of cytotechnologists, paramedicals important for cytologic screening programs.

In recognition of their rapid expansion, there are new chapters on recent technological developments and on the cytodiagnosis of childhood tumours. A special section on the importance of multidisciplinary team meetings that include the cytopathologist as a core member of the team has also been included at the end of each chapter. As active members of this team, cytopathologists can define their role in the management pathway and thus bring the patient and the microscope together as never before. This textbook/atlas is designed to present a comprehensive and state of the art approach to the cytologic diagnosis and reporting of pancreaticobiliary lesions. Chapters address each of the diagnostic categories defined by the P.S.C. The definition of each category along with the clinical pathologic entities contained within the category are discussed along with specific cytologic criteria for inclusion of a cytologic specimen within the category. Each chapter is lavishly illustrated demonstrating diagnostic criteria and examples of lesions contained within the category. Additionally, appropriate ancillary testing is discussed and where appropriate illustrated. Each chapter concludes with a discussion of appropriate management as well as estimates of malignancy risk for the category. The Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology System for Reporting Pancreaticobiliary Cytology: Definitions, Criteria, Ancillary Testing and Management will provide the reader with a unified approach to diagnosing and reporting interpretations of cytologic specimens obtained from the pancreaticobiliary tract. This international group shares the goal of creating a practical and uniform reporting system for salivary gland fine needle aspiration (FNA). This book is organized into six general diagnostic categories: “Non-Diagnostic,” “Non-Neoplastic,” “Atypia of Undetermined Significance (AUS),” “Neoplasm: Benign,” “Neoplasm: Salivary Gland Neoplasm of Uncertain Malignant Potential (SUMP),” “Suspicious for Malignancy,” and “Malignant.” It includes definitions, morphologic criteria, and explanations for each of the diagnostic categories. Specific chapters are dedicated to the application of the latest available ancillary studies, radiologic features of salivary gland lesions, clinical management, and histological considerations including updates from the most recent 5th Edition WHO blue book. The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology 2nd Edition represents an essential step towards increasing the overall effectiveness of salivary gland FNA and fostering better communication between clinicians and between institutions to improve overall patient care.

A general chapter discusses sample collections and techniques, followed by a 'systems' approach and chapters on specific types of fluid. Within systems chapters, normal findings are established and then abnormal findings are presented by class of problems, such as bacterial lesions, fungal lesions, parasitic lesions, etc. in the case of the eye. Algorithms on sample evaluations enhance text discussions by guiding readers to the most likely cytologic diagnosis. In addition, a color plate section features 64 illustrations for convenient comparison of cell types and infectious agents. A detailed index makes this edition even more useful as a quick clinical reference, ideal for helping readers understand correct collection and handling procedures, avoid costly errors, and make accurate diagnoses. - Completely revised/rewritten chapters on gastrointestinal tract, cerebrospinal fluid, and synovial fluid, reflecting new tests and methods of collection - Completely revamped art program, with hundreds of new full-colour slides - Updated terminology reflects current language used in the field (e.g., new bacterial/viral/protozoal species names)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the era of precision medicine, physicians are increasingly in need of more definitive diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive information derived from small biopsy specimens such as cytology samples in order to guide effective patient care. Cytopathology is well poised to meet this challenge. Whilst the traditional cytomorphologic component of cytology practice is still valid, enormous advances have been made in the field of cytopathology thanks to transformative technology and innovative individuals that have augmented the cytologists' ability to meet the demands of modern medicine. The purpose of this book is to describe, illustrate, and review many of the most recent developments regarding modern techniques employed in cytopathology. This latest monograph is intended for all cytologists including cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, cytology lab assistants, trainees, research scientists, and anyone who is interested in the field of cytopathology. We have invited pioneering experts in their respective fields to author these chapters. This book is not only the culmination of their groundbreaking work and effort but also presents a critical review of the current literature. We have attempted to provide readers with an informative and comprehensive aid so that they may better appreciate how emerging technology has been applied to cytology. Each chapter in this book presents a stand-alone contemporary review of emerging topics in cytopathology. We hope that you will find this monograph thought-provoking and a valuable reference for your practice.
