Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complexity of Seismic Time Series: Measurement and Application applies the tools of nonlinear dynamics to seismic analysis, allowing for the revelation of new details in micro-seismicity, new perspectives in seismic noise, and new tools for prediction of seismic events. The book summarizes both advances and applications in the field, thus meeting the needs of both fundamental and practical seismology. Merging the needs of the classical field and the very modern terms of complexity science, this book covers theory and its application to advanced nonlinear time series tools to investigate Earth’s vibrations, making it a valuable tool for seismologists, hazard managers and engineers. Covers the topic of Earth’s vibrations involving many different aspects of theoretical and observational seismology Identifies applications of advanced nonlinear time series tools for the characterization of these Earth’s signals Merges the needs of geophysics with the applications of complexity theory Describes different methodologies to analyze problems, not only in the context of geosciences, but also those associated with different complex systems across disciplines

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Special Publications Series. Purpose. The Preliminary List of Significant Earthquake Precursors (the List) is intended to serve as a preliminary assessment of the state of the art in the identification of earthquake precursors which may be useful in earthquake prediction attempts. It will be updated periodically during the International Decade of Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR). Placing a precursor, a method, or a case history on this List does not guarantee that the reported anomaly was actually a genuine precursor, that the method works in general or that the case history is without shortcoming. A method is included on the List if the majority of the reviewers and panelists thought it more likely than not that the method may be useful for earthquake prediction. An individual case history is put on the List if the majority thought that it was more likely than not that the claimed anomaly was real and physically related to the mainshock. Similarly, the decision by the panel not to place an item on this list does not necessarily mean that it concludes that there is no value in that line of research. It only means that the majority of the reviewers and panelists thought that the work or the documentation was incomplete or had shortcomings to a degree that makes it more likely than not that the technique in its current state of development is not yet established as useful for earthquake prediction. Also we do not know at present to what extent precursors may be different in different tectonic settings. A method that appears promising or useless in one environment may not be so in another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major theme of this book is scientific evaluation of different categories of unusual phenomena i.e. precursors prior to large earthquakes and the explanation of their occurrence using electromagnetic models. In addition focus has been targeted to consider various scientific methods in the arena of interdisciplinary fields mainly on the short term forecasting of the large earthquakes, which is making a remarkable progress in recent years. The book presents an integrated approach to the concept of earthquake prediction as a whole, based on studies of precursors related to the living things, underground, land and atmosphere. The book will play an important role in the understanding and developing new and effective systems for earthquake prediction, based on multidisciplinary approach, which will ultimately help in reducing the earthquake related loss of lives and property.
