This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians of our financial system will record this as an age of deregulation and bank mergers. Deregulation, a cornerstone of President Reagan's Administration, resulted in federal and state legislation that contributed to increased competition for financial services and increased merger activity. During the 1981-1986 period, there were 2,139 mergers in banking and finance, accounting for 16 percent of total merger activity.l More mergers occurred in banking and finance than in any other industry. Because of these bank mergers, there are vast amounts of data avail able for scholarly research. This book presents some results of that research which will be of interest to academics, bankers, investors, legislators, and regulators. The book consists of ten articles, and it is divided into three parts. Part 1: National and Regional Bank Mergers gives a broad perspective of merger activity. The first article by Peter S. Rose compared the growth of bank holding companies that merged with those that did not merge. One conclusion of his study was that banks planning mergers tended to be aggressively managed and were often beset by problems, such as low profitability or declining loan quality. Mergers were one solution to their problems. But he found no solid evidence that mergers resulted in greater profitability or reduced risk. He also observed that acquiring banks did not seem to grow faster than those choosing not to merge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume thirteen in Current Topics in Management is focused on global perspectives on strategy, behavior, and performance. Originally presented at the 2008 ICAM (International Conference on Advances in Management) conference, these contributions provide a substantial basis for such thematic developments. Th e series continues to resist pressures for specialized research on narrow topics within some temporary niche. It transcends narrow disciplines and national boundaries to provide management research with a universalistic fl avor. There are thousands of books and hundreds of academic and practitioner journals and magazines about the general subject of management. Each has its own subculture and concerns. The thirteenth volume of Current Topics is devoted to expanding and integrating ideas, research, and experiences that cuts across these specialties. Th e editor recognizes that it is important to respect the natural interdependencies that constitute management, but doing so requires the fi eld to rise above narrow specialization and niche research. For an outstanding vision of the frontiers of management research and emerging topics such as the sub-prime crisis and recession this volume is an excellent place to begin. Among other topics, the volume highlights the economic roots of management--the increase in visibility and perceived importance of accounting in the banking sector and how accounting is signifi cant beyond its technical roles. It provides new insights into how management accounting practices, along with other organizational systems, play an important role in questioning, visualizing, analyzing, and measuring implemented strategies. It understands accounting's important infl uence on strategic decision-making, and its role in legitimating action. Cumulatively, these contributions integrate theory, research, and practice, while sharing ideas and insights from diff erent national, cultural, and research traditions.

It reflects the latest developments, from comprehensive regulatory updates to details of the many new programs that have arisen from recent financial crises. Whether you are already in the financial services industry or will be a future banking professional, you will gain a better understanding of the risks associated with loans and securities, the process of securitization, excessive leverage and inadequate liquidity, technology and operations, and also gain insights into the banking markets in Asia and the United States. The book provides a framework for developing effective strategies for bank managers to maintain an effective balance between generating profits and taking risks. Its unique approach to presenting bank management from a decision-making perspective shows how bank managers make solid financial decisions. You will see how decisions in one area affect performance and opportunities in other areas. In addition, you will develop a solid foundation of understanding based on knowledge of the current issues that bank managers face. As you become familiar with basic financial models used to formulate decisions, you will better understand the strengths and weaknesses of data analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multinational Banks and Underdevelopment is a study that relates global banking with the lack of multidimensional development in various geographical regions. The book first details the imperialist role of finance, and then proceeds to discussing the process of multinational bank penetration. The next series of chapters talks about how multinational banks are one of the major causes of unequal development, and indicates that the stopgap measures have failed to contribute anything to remedy the problem. Next, the selection discusses that a much more radical approach is needed to bring about real change. The book then details that consortium banks do not help in alleviating the problem. The book will be of great interest to economists, political scientists, sociologists, and game theorists.
