Book Synopsis Colonial British Caribbean Newspapers by : Howard S. Pactor
Download or read book Colonial British Caribbean Newspapers written by Howard S. Pactor and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1990-07-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a milestone achievement in the documentation of the newspapers of the British Caribbean islands, a field that, until now, has been neglected by many scholars. The existing and bygone papers, and several commonly unknown publications, listed in this work provide a wealth of information about these obscure times. No other work, before this one, has been as extensive in its documentation and coverage of the individual papers. Of special assistance is the index, which completes the work. This bibliography seeks to determine the extent of newspaper publications in the British Caribbean colonies and to organize it into a useful form. In the past, researchers have either ignored or given brief and scattered coverage to this information, but with Colonial British Caribbean Newspapers, Pactor hopes to make this information available to scholars. His book lists information about the known newspapers of the British Colonial Caribbean, arranged alphabetically by colony and chronologically within each colony. Dates of publications and names of editors, publishers, and owners are given, if known. The newspapers are also listed in an index. It is hoped that a work of this sort may make access to these newspapers easier for scholarly research and call attention to the need to find and preserve these fragile resources. Historians, sociologists, and mass communication scholars will be especially appreciative of Pactor's efforts.

Book Synopsis Journalism in a Small Place by : Juliette Storr
Download or read book Journalism in a Small Place written by Juliette Storr and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Journalism in a Small Place explores the changes and challenges in journalism and communication in the Caribbean in the twenty-first century. Tracing the history of media in the English speaking Caribbean, this book provides insight into the development of these industries from their inception under British imperial rule to their current focus on advancing national development in the post-independence period. The influence of US media on media content and cultural tastes, and the lingering effects of colonialism on media are also investigated, drawing on globalization theories of hybridity. Interviews with journalists, editors, and media owners in English speaking Caribbean countries provide firsthand insight into the profession and practice of journalism in the region, highlighting the social and cultural context in which the media industries operate. Additionally, this book describes the current economic success of Caribbean journalism and the factors driving its new trends. It provides an overview of the current state of Caribbean journalism as it reflects on these questions: What is the purpose of journalism in small Caribbean countries? What are the challenges of practicing journalism in the Caribbean in the twenty-first century? What is the future of journalism in the Caribbean? In response, Storr develops a theoretical and practical response to concerns of professional ethics, responsible performance, and the training and education of journalists in the region. In doing so, Journalism in a Small Place elucidates the impact of journalism and communication on the social, political, economic and cultural aspects of Caribbean people's lived experiences, and journalism's power to promote and effect social change."--

Book Synopsis Literary Research and Postcolonial Literatures in English by : H. Faye Christenberry
Download or read book Literary Research and Postcolonial Literatures in English written by H. Faye Christenberry and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-08-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcolonial literatures can be defined as the body of creative work written by authors whose lands were formerly subjugated to colonial rule. In previous volumes of this series, the research literature of former British colonies Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand have been addressed. This volume offers guidance for those researching the postcolonial literature of the former British colonies in Africa, the Caribbean, and South Asia. Among the forty nations represented in this volume are South Africa, India, Pakistan, Ghana, Jamaica, Swaziland, Belize, and Namibia. With the exception of South Africa (which formed the Union of South Africa in 1910), this guide picks up its coverage in 1947, when both India and Pakistan gained their independence. The literature created by writers from these nations represents the diverse experiences in the postcolonial condition and are the subject of this book. The volume provides best-practice suggestions for the research process and discusses how to take advantage of primary text resources in a variety of formats, both digital and paper based: bibliographies, indexes, research guides, archives, special collections, and microforms.
