Book excerpt: Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) is a mechanism by which plants may respond to initial pathogen challenge through activation of inducible defense responses, thereby increasing resistance to subsequent infection attempts. Fitness costs are assumed to be incurred by plants induced for SAR, and several studies have attempted to quantify these costs. Monterey pine (Pinus radiata), the first plant shown to express SAR in nature, is native to California and widely planted in Mediterranean climates around the world. Pitch canker, a disease caused by Fusarium circinatum, is a serious threat to P. radiata in native forests and in plantations. We developed various models based on our data and data from other studies on SAR to simulate dynamics of P. radiata, F. circinatum, and the SAR resistance mechanism. Our objectives in this work were to 1) develop a mathematical model based on game theory to simulate competition between hypothetical plant populations with and without the capability for SAR, 2) develop a matrix projection model based on P. radiata demography data collected in native stands to project Monterey pine populations over time in the presence of pitch canker, 3) develop a process-based model to explain an observed shift in P. radiata resistance phenotypes to pitch canker in areas where the disease is well established, 4) quantify the impacts of SAR to pitch canker on fitness in P. radiata, and 5) confirm microscopically that F. circinatum can infect P. radiata shoot tissue without wounding. Our game theory model combines theoretical and experimental work on SAR and allows for speculation on disease pressure that might have been present when the phenomenon first evolved. Our matrix projection model is a potential resource for plantation managers and other stakeholders to inform future management decisions in the face of pitch canker and other disease issues. Our process-based SAR response model provides an explanation for shifts in P. radiata resistance phenotype distributions observed in nature and suggests a possible pathway for epidemic development in new outbreaks of pitch canker. Our work also shows no reduction in growth of P. radiata associated with SAR at the levels tested and that there may even be a benefit to priming for SAR as a disease management tool in plantation forestry. Finally, microscopic studies on a GFP-expressing isolate of F. circinatum demonstrated that the fungus can colonize stem epidermal and cortical tissue even in the absence of a wound, which may or may not result in development of symptoms.

That obscure status and the lack of any reputation as a virgin timber slowed its due recognition as a commercial crop. Nevertheless, it has become a major plantation forest crop internationally. It has become the pre-eminent commercial forest species in New Zealand, Chile and Australia, with important plantings in some other countries. It consequently features prominently in the international trade in forest products, in addition to its importance in domestic markets of grower countries. Very fast growth, considerable site tolerances, ease of raising in nurseries and transplanting, and ease of processing and using its wood for a range of products and purposes, have made it the utility softwood of choice almost everywhere it can be grown satisfactorily. Abundant genetic variation and its amenability to other management inputs created special opportunities for its domestication. The story of its domestication forms a classic case history in the development of modern commercial forestry, with trailblazing in both genetic improvement and plantation management; this inevitably meant a learning process that provided instructive lessons, especially for tree breeders dealing with some other species. Paradoxically, the plantation monocultures have played and can continue to play an important role in protecting natural forests and other forms of biodiversity. Given the attractions of growing radiata pine, there were inevitably cases of overreach in planting it, with lessons to be learnt. Economic globalisation has meant globalisation of pests and disease organisms, and the scale on which radiata pine is grown has meant is has been the focus of various biotic alarms, none of which have proved catastrophic. Temptations, remain, however, to pay less than due attention to some aspects of risk management. The chapter structure of the book is based on historical periods, beginning long before any important human influences, and ending with a look into what the future might hold for the species and its role in human and ecological sustainability. Almost throughout, there has been complex interplay between the technical aspects, local social and economic factors, various types of institution, the enthusiasm and drive of some very influential individuals, and tides of economic ideology, threads that needed to be woven together to do the story justice.

Book excerpt: Fungal pathogens of plants can be cryptic associates both in hosts that may eventually become diseased, and in plants that will never develop symptoms. Such cryptic associations have important implications for unintended movement of plant pathogens and predictions of disease outcomes. Fusarium circinatum is a pathogen of many pine species worldwide, causing a disease known as pitch canker. Pinus radiata, one of the most susceptible and economically important hosts, is damaged by pitch canker in native forests, and in production systems in South Africa, Chile and Spain. The first objective of this project was to determine if grasses can serve as alternate hosts of F. circinatum, by characterizing endophytic life history strategies in corn (Zea mays) (Chapter 1) and conducing surveys that identified cryptic infection of grasses in native pine forests in California (Appendix 1) and plantations in South Africa (Appendix 2). These studies document the first non-coniferous hosts for F. circinatum. The second objective was to characterize the manner in which F. circinatum colonizes P. radiata seedlings (Chapter 2). The results revealed a commensal to potentially beneficial association within roots, which leads to disease only when colonization extends into shoot tissue. These studies offer a reinterpretation of this fungus as a hemibiotrophic, rather than a necrotrophic, pathogen. Moreover, cryptic root infections in pine seedlings were found to induce a systemic response that rendered plants more resistant to subsequent shoot infections by the same fungus in a dose dependent fashion that did not reduce seedling fitness (Chapter 3). This indicates that regenerating populations may be able to adaptively respond to pathogen infection and thereby persist, contrary to the current concept that seedling survival is contingent upon escape. Cumulatively, these studies point to the possibility that pathogenicity to pines may not be central to the life history of F. circinatum, but may instead be an artifact of introduction into new host environments.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The fungal pathogen Fusarium circinatum (Nirenberg and O' Donnell) is the causal agent of pine pitch canker (PPC) disease, which seriously affects conifer species in forests and nurseries worldwide. In Europe, PPC is only established in the Iberian Peninsula; however, it is presumed that its range could expand through the continent in the near future. Infection caused by this fungus requires open wounds on the tree, including physical damage caused by insects. Therefore, a relationship probably occurs between PPC and a wide variety of insects. The aim of this review is to outline the taxonomic and ecological diversity of insect species with high potential association with F. circinatum in Europe and elsewhere. The insects were classified as vectors, carriers and wounding agents according to the association level with the PPC disease. In addition, we discuss the insect-mediated spreading of PPC disease in relation to the different phases of forest stand development, from seeds and seedlings in nurseries to mature stands. Lastly, to improve our predictive capacities and to design appropriate intervention measures and strategies for controlling disease dissemination by insects, variables such as geographic location, time of the year and host species should be considered. Our review provides a framework of the multiple factors that regulate the insect-host interactions and determine the success of the infection
