Book Synopsis Genome Mapping and Genomics in Animal-Associated Microbes by : Vishvanath Nene

This book was released on 2008-11-24 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achievements and progress in genome mapping and the genomics of microbes supersede by far those for higher plants and animals, in part due to their enormous economic implication but also smaller genome size. In the post-genomic era, whole genome sequences of animal-associated microbes are providing clues to depicting the genetic basis of the complex host-pathogen relationships and the evolution of parasitism; and to improving methods of controlling pathogens. This volume focuses on a globally important group of intracellular prokaryotic pathogens which affect livestock animals. These include Brucella, Mycobacterium, Anaplasma and Ehrlichia, as well as the protozoan pathogens Cryptosporidium and Theileria, for which genome sequence data is available. Insights from comparative genomics of the microbes described provide clues to the adaptation involved in host-microbe interactions, as well as resources potentially useful for application in future research and product development.

Download or read book EqualBITE written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The ivory tower, like other stately homes in the UK, might present a grand façade to the world but closer inspection reveals a dark, spidery basement full of inequalities.” Gender imbalances still exist across all areas of higher education. From salaries and promotion, to representation in the curriculum, formal approaches and good intentions rarely address the full complexity. EqualBITE digs into the messy reality of higher education gender issues, presenting people’s stories, experiences and frustrations and – more importantly – what can be done. University of Edinburgh students and staff share real-life experiences of gender challenges and opportunities, and their constructive responses. The book condenses current academic research into practical actions that do make a difference. EqualBITE is a pragmatic and positive response to gender issues in academia – a catalyst for creating a culture which is better for everyone. “We were so pleased to see this new guide to one aspect of diversity—gender equality—and to see how good it is: the book is comprehensive; it is raw, honest and personal; and it is very well written. It is a book both for reading cover-to-cover and for dipping into, and it will be enormously influential.” – Jim Smith Director of Science, Wellcome Trust & Gemma Tracey Diversity & Inclusion Programme Manager – Science & Research, Wellcome Trust “The balance between data and lived experience equip the reader with the vital understanding of the depth of institutionalised inequality...This is recommended reading for anyone working in higher education who truly wants to create a fairer culture of women.” – Talat Yaqoob Director, Equate Scotland “I really enjoyed reading the recipes - they combine humour with practical advice on how to tackle important gender issues.” – Fiona Watt Vice-Dean Research and Impact, Faculty of Life Science and Medicine, King's College London

Book Synopsis Veterinary Medicine by : Pamela Hunter
Download or read book Veterinary Medicine written by Pamela Hunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veterinary medicine has long been recognized as one of the more neglected areas of medical history. One of the main stumbling blocks to research is the lack of comprehensive information regarding the survival and availability of primary source material. Veterinary Medicine: A Guide to Historical Sources redresses these issues for the first time, offering researchers an unparalleled tool with which to approach the subject. The book opens with a brief history of veterinary medicine and the veterinary profession from the fourteenth to the beginning of the twenty first centuries, identifying the key dates and events that shaped their development. There then follows a chapter on the nature and uses of the records covered by the book, outlining the types of records found, the type of information they contain and their likely uses by different types of researcher. A brief user's guide then explains how to use the book. After these preliminary sections, comes the main body of the book, the lists of records. It is here that the various practices and institutions covered by the book are listed, together with the types of records they hold, the dates they cover and where they are kept. A short biographical history is also included with each entry where appropriate. Taken as a whole this volume will prove to be an invaluable aid for any scholar, researching the history of veterinary medicine in Britain.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Research on Academic Libraries as Partners in Data Science Ecosystems by : Mani, Nandita S.
Download or read book Handbook of Research on Academic Libraries as Partners in Data Science Ecosystems written by Mani, Nandita S. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-05-06 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond providing space for data science activities, academic libraries are often overlooked in the data science landscape that is emerging at academic research institutions. Although some academic libraries are collaborating in specific ways in a small subset of institutions, there is much untapped potential for developing partnerships. As library and information science roles continue to evolve to be more data-centric and interdisciplinary, and as research using a variety of data types continues to proliferate, it is imperative to further explore the dynamics between libraries and the data science ecosystems in which they are a part. The Handbook of Research on Academic Libraries as Partners in Data Science Ecosystems provides a global perspective on current and future trends concerning the integration of data science in libraries. It provides both a foundational base of knowledge around data science and explores numerous ways academicians can reskill their staff, engage in the research enterprise, contribute to curriculum development, and help build a stronger ecosystem where libraries are part of data science. Covering topics such as data science initiatives, digital humanities, and student engagement, this book is an indispensable resource for librarians, information professionals, academic institutions, researchers, academic libraries, and academicians.
