This book was released on 2011 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has a responsibility to identify, assess and communicate current and emerging threats to human health from communicable diseases. Surveillance data follow trends in time and indicate health problems resulting from particular diseases, but are subject to underreporting and do not account for disease severity. To increase insight into the impact of communicable diseases on population health in Europe and to support health policy-making, in 2008 ECDC initiated a call to develop a methodology for measuring the current and future burden of communicable diseases in the European Union Member States and European Economic Area (EEA)/European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries. The result was the current and future Burden of Communicable Disease (BCoDE) project. The current protocol is the output of Work Package 1 of the BCoDE project. Choices concerning the methodology of future disease burden estimates were taken on the basis of literature reviews, data reviews and the results of workshops/expert meetings. These are summarised in the current protocol.

Book Synopsis Annual Epidemiological Report on Communicable Diseases in Europe 2010 by :
Download or read book Annual Epidemiological Report on Communicable Diseases in Europe 2010 written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the analysis of data reported for 2008 by the 27 EU Member States and three EEA/EFTA countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The main aim of this report is to provide some indication, based on the available data, of where the main burden of communicable diseases now lies in the European Union. In these areas, more concerted action is required in order to decrease the present and potential future burden on society, on public health and healthcare systems, and to reduce human suffering. These data contribute to ECDC's task of providing the evidence-base for action, to help identify and share practices, and to suggest methods for follow-up of interventions. Although there has been much progress in improving the quality and comparability of the data, the reader is still cautioned against making direct comparisons of the notification rates between countries. Surveillance systems differ widely, and the relationship between reported or notified and actual incidence varies from country to country for many diseases. For the first time the annual Analysis of Threats monitored in the EU is being reported separately. Possible readership: Public health officials, health professionals, policy makers, surveillance experts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume addresses the environmental impacts of pollution on freshwater aquatic ecosystems and presents sustainable management and remediation practices and advanced technology help to address the different types of pollutants. Freshwater Pollution and Aquatic Ecosystems: Environmental Impact and Sustainable Management considers the need for sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective tools and technologies to assess, monitor, and properly manage the increasing issues of aquatic pollution. It provides detailed accounts of the phenomena and mechanisms related to aquatic pollution and highlights the problems and threats associated with pollution contamination in freshwater. It provides useful insight into the sustainable and advanced pollution remediation technology adopted by different countries for the monitoring, assessment, and sustainable management of pollution. The chapters in the volume evaluate the sources of harmful pollutants, which include industrial effluents, sewage, and runoff from agricultural industries, which result in toxic microbes, organic waste, oils, and high load of nutrients. Unsustainable management practices of domestic sewage and indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides lead to the technological disturbance of aquatic biota. In addition to harming aquatic biota, these pollutants find their way into the human body through inhalation, ingestion, or absorption and finally tend to bio-accumulate in trophic levels of the food chain, which poses a major risk to human beings. This book will be a valuable resource for ecologists, environmentalists, scientists, and many others for their work in understanding and management of aquatic pollutants in freshwater biospheres.

The second edition portrays both the conceptual framework and practical aspects of infectious disease surveillance. It is a comprehensive resource designed to improve the tracking of infectious diseases and to serve as a starting point in the development of new surveillance systems. Infectious Disease Surveillance includes over 45 chapters from over 100 contributors, and topics organized into six sections based on major themes. Section One highlights the critical role surveillance plays in public health and it provides an overview of the current International Health Regulations (2005) in addition to successes and challenges in infectious disease eradication. Section Two describes surveillance systems based on logical program areas such as foodborne illnesses, vector-borne diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, viral hepatitis healthcare and transplantation associated infections. Attention is devoted to programs for monitoring unexplained deaths, agents of bioterrorism, mass gatherings, and disease associated with international travel. Sections Three and Four explore the uses of the Internet and wireless technologies to advance infectious disease surveillance in various settings with emphasis on best practices based on deployed systems. They also address molecular laboratory methods, and statistical and geospatial analysis, and evaluation of systems for early epidemic detection. Sections Five and Six discuss legal and ethical considerations, communication strategies and applied epidemiology-training programs. The rest of the chapters offer public-private partnerships, as well lessons from the 2009-2010 H1N1 influenza pandemic and future directions for infectious disease surveillance.

Book Synopsis Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease by : Illaria Capua
Download or read book Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease written by Illaria Capua and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-24 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avian Influenza (AI) and Newcastle Disease (ND) are two devastating diseases of poultry, which cause losses to the poultry industry and influence the liveability of rural communities worldwide. Following the H5N1 epidemic they appear to be endemic at least in Asia, Eastern Europe, The Middle East and Africa. Particularly in case of AI outbreaks it is essential that infection is diagnosed promptly and that isolates are made available to the international scientific community. Currently, several organisations including OIE, FAO and the EC have organised training courses in affected areas. However, often these courses do not cover all aspects of AI/ND diagnosis but only certain aspects. This results in fragmented areas of knowledge and in the application of different diagnostic protocols in different parts of the world. The objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive approach to AI diagnosis ranging from the clinical elements that should trigger a suspicion in the field, to the post mortem technique, collection of samples, processing/ shipment of specimens, virological, serological and molecular diagnosis and guidelines for notification.
