Download or read book Japan-Bashing written by Narrelle Morris and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to examine and analyse the phenomenon of ‘Japan-bashing’, from its invention and popularisation in the United States in the late 1970s to the emergence of other national variants, including in Australia and Japan, to its gradual decline in the late 1990s. It is the first major book-length study of ‘Japan-bashing from a multinational perspective, one that attempts to place ‘Japan-bashing’ in its proper historical context and to examine its operation and legacy in the twenty-first century. Despite its importance in the study of discourses about Japan, as well as in understanding broader global changes in the late twentieth century and beyond, the phenomenon of ‘Japan-bashing’ remains largely neglected in published writings. Moreover, it is a far more complex phenomenon than has been assessed thus far. While, on first glance, ‘Japan-bashing’ merely seems to recall other periods in which Japan has been viewed as a dangerous ‘other’ to ‘the West’, such as the Western emphasis on the ‘yellow peril’ from the late nineteenth century as well as Allied anti-Japanese propaganda during World War II, ‘Japan-bashing’ also had its own distinctive characteristics. Moreover, while ‘Japan-bashing’ is often described as a quaint historical, rather than a pressing contemporary, phenomenon, it is actually by no means extinct. The ongoing influence of ‘Japan-bashing’ also has parallels in other ‘bashing’ phenomena, such as ‘China-bashing’. This book will be of interest to scholars and postgraduate students in Japanese studies and international relations.

Book Synopsis Australia And South Asia: The Crystallisation Of A Relationship by : Ravindra Varma
Download or read book Australia And South Asia: The Crystallisation Of A Relationship written by Ravindra Varma and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 2003-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia has become a battleground of power-politics today where even the so-called “Middle Powers” have their vital stakes. Australia’s participation in the Southeast Asian drama has naturally aroused the interest of commentators and policy-makers in Asia and abroad. Australia is Asia’s nearest “white” neighbour and 70% of its diplomatic activity is concerned with Asian affairs. Dr. Ravindra Varma’s analysis of Australia’s involvement in Southeast Asia since the Second World War forms the first full-length study by an Asian writer of Australia’s Asian policies. The book has grown out of the author’s research in India, Australia and a number of Southeast Asian countries, such as, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, South Vietnam, The Philippines and Indonesia. His discussions with officials, politicians, diplomats and statesmen of various nations in the area have helped the book to achieve a perspective which is intimate and detached at the same time. The book is indispensable to students of international politics in general and specialists on South and Southeast Asia in particular.
Book Synopsis The Boundaries of "the Japanese". by : Eiji Oguma
Download or read book The Boundaries of "the Japanese". written by Eiji Oguma and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2017 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in this paperback In this the parallel volume to The Boundaries of 'the Japanese': Volume 1: Okinawa 1818-1972 (2014), renowned historical sociologist Eiji Oguma further explores the fluctuating political, geographical, ethnic, and sociocultural borders of Japan and the Japanese from the latter years of the Tokugawa shogunate to the mid-20th century. Focus is placed first upon the northern island of Hokkaido with its indigenous Ainu inhabitants, and then upon the mainstays of Japan's colonial empire-Taiwan and Korea. In continuing to elaborate on the theme of inclusion and exclusion, the author comprehensively recounts and analyzes the events, actions, campaigns, and attitudes of both the rulers and the ruled as Japan endeavoured both to be seen as a strong, civilized nation by the wider world, and to 'civilize' its disparate subjects on its own terms. Book Synopsis From Subject to Citizen by : Alastair Davidson
Download or read book From Subject to Citizen written by Alastair Davidson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-05-12 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important, theoretically sophisticated work explores the concepts of li beral democracy, citizenship and rights. Grounded in critical original research, the book examines Australia's political and legal institutions, and traces the history and future of citizenship and the state in Australia. The central theme is that making proof of belonging to the national culture a precondition of citizenship is inappropriate for a multicultural society such as Australia. This becomes an object lesson for the multicultural regional polities forming throughout the world.
